Thanks for sharing that hamstring stretch. Does your PT person do something similar to you when you have your visits? Mine used to do it and would put a slight rotation on it and I could feel it all the way up into my buttocks, it was fantastic!! I can't get the same effect no matter what I use on my leg...

Wow, I didn't think about what the PT qualifiers might be for discharge in Florida but yeah maybe it involves a crocodile... :th_heehee:

Take care,
Cardie

Cardie,

Interesting you should ask that about the rotation...With the exercise I describe, I can rotate my toe IN and increase the stretch, like you say. I wear sneakers to do this cuz otherwise it is too much pressure on a small point on my heel on the wall ( i happen to have my foot on a board trim between sliding doors) If I am lazy my toe will drift out and reduce the stretch but as i pull it in so it is perpendicular to the wall, the stretch increases!

And my PT did do kind of a football players hamstring stretch the first couple visits but felt my hamstring was not at risk and stopped (that's the one where she put my calf on her shoulder and gently pushed...)

Hope you find this new one effective....

Z

Thank you for encouraging me to put my feet on the wall :th_heehee:

Also nice to read the dialog between you and Charlie on the rower -- it encouraged me to sit on the one at my gym again for the first time and just move back and forth to see if my legs could tolerate the angles since my surgery -- and I could!! Good news.... I can't try the arm motion yet as I have an issue with my SI joint that I'm trying to get resolved first. But, hey I do squats in the squat rack with no bar, so I'll just row on the rowing machine with no arms -- so what!! :hysterical:

Take care,
Cardie

Hey John,

Thanks for the earlier post on my thread.

I can't wait to try that Hamstring stretch it looks awesome!!

Cardie (& John) I saw my Surgeon today and we we're talking about rowing and it's feasibility for Hippies. He was a little conservative about just how much "compression" of the thigh I will achieve without endangering dislocation ie suck and see but don't go mad ..... but he was more than in favour of using the machine as an exercise and stretching aid! So go for it folks and Cardie just pull the handle as far out as you want at backstops and keep your arms and torso straight that way you've got balance and you will only be using your legs.

Charlie

It absolutely is a nice way to move in and out that way...I will say that the the little sliding seat is designed to move effortlessly, so be careful that you don't shoot yourself too far too fast. Start very slowly...till you are used to how easy it is to ZOOOOOOM.

When I am pulling on the handle, that is providing resistance for me to pull against...so less of an issue when really engaging the "oar" part...

I wouldn't dare get on the floor - I'd never get up again!
However, there might be a way round it - pull the bed up to the door?

(changed the link to a photo, Z - it's also been added to the hamstring article in the Library)

Hello Z,

hahahaha Josephine I was thinking the same about getting stuck on the floor in that position! I did get onto my knees for a split second just to make sure if I fell I knew how to get up. My therapist made fun of me while I was doing this, he said I was acting like I was having a panic attack! Both my knees are shod, so my flexibility is horrible for getting up and down on the floor!

It's a good looking way to stretch though!

My therapist doesn't do stretches with me (pout) the other thing this week I asked him why did I not get to have the heat pads or ice packs, everyone else seems to be laying around relaxing with these things, and he laughed and said no my goal was to keep moving...duh this is no fun!!

I enjoy reading about your therapy thoughts-activities it's inspirational!

Thanks!

Zed, that's a great hamstring stretch. Whilst I have no trouble getting to the floor - I spend a lot of time on my knees cos I can't bend, my hamstrings are rubbish and I haven't touched my toes in years. So I'm going to give that one a try. I've done it with two legs, in yoga, but that's easy compared to one leg.

Also interested to read your conversations about the rower. I had a go yesterday for the first time since my THR, rather cautiously, but it seemed not to be a problem. didn't push it, though, only did 5 minutes. I'll be braver next time.

Z, thank you for that! I've been doing that stretch but away from a wall and with a yoga strap held around my ankle to keep the leg up in the air. Using the wall would let me hold the position much longer and really relax. It must be effective if it got you back to touching your toes after only a few days.

Jen,

It helped me get down 2-3 inches lower...even tho I had been doing other hamstring stretches for a week or 2.

They will not be inviting me to the Cirque du Soleil anytime soon, but every little bit helps!!

Hope you're well,
Z

Hi Z

Just popping by to say 'hello'.

Sounds like you are progressing fantastically, I am impressed :)
xoxoxoxo

Hi Z,

That stretch looks good - I will try that today. I still have a problem with flexibility, mainly because there are things that I have never been able to do.

Seems like a good time to learn!

Hi folks,

It's 2 months ago today that I had the hip replaced and the new one works quite well. In my day to day life I do everything I want and get around just fine, but truth be told that was not why I had it done. I could live my life "ok" before with just some pain and limping, so long as i didn't exercise or "have fun".

So, don't get me wrong. I know this is a journey and I know that 6 months or 12 months is still a good goal to get back most or all of what I will get back, but I am also happy to invest some spare time in getting there faster....hopefully without hurting myself.

I made the attached video for family members who live far away and former teammates...just to give them an update on my progress (and for me to have reminder of where I was at various stages). I had hoped to see if I could "gently" kick a soccer ball around but 9 inches of wet sticky snow did not cooperate...so kicking will have to wait.

Thanks for being my supportive hippie friends...

[The "exercises" I show here are things I am just starting to do now and have done one or 2 of these just a couple times post-op.]

That's it?

Noooooooo oh my goodness it's phenomenal! Watch out arsenal.....

Have a great week Z!

WOW! Jumping jacks, are you kidding me...Awesome job and what an inspiration you are to us...thank you.

Diane,

Thanks for that...

I hesitate to post videos as I realize that not everyone is having similar outcomes. I actually considered posting this back in the pre-op area to say all those who are stressing over their upcoming surgery, This can go pretty well and have you moving around in a couple months...no promises but it can happen.

And over here I would say that these new hunks of metal and plastic can end up being very functional hips that do lots of good things. I'm not patient, and I "push the envelope", but hopefully without negative repercussions.

If I inspire anyone to keep at it, then I feel good about my involvement here... :thumb:

Very nice video Z!!

Maybe you should flash your scar at the end to prove you really had that surgery... :wink1:

Keep up the good work,
Cardie
