@tracycharli - sorry your going through this and sorry I don't have any answers for you. I hope you get some relief somehow.... I will be interested in what Jo has to say. From what I have read on here 30 is not too young for a THR at all..

Oh Tracy....I do hope you can get some good answers to your fears....you have been through such a lot already at 30..... Hang on in there honey....take care...Chrissie xx

Hi @tracycharli I am so sorry that you are dealing with this.If you need a hip replacement then you need one regardless of your age.You need to consult an OS who has a special interest in younger patients.I am sure Jo will be able to give you some good advice on finding one in the northeast.I was in hospital with a 34 year old lady who was also having. THR because of hip dysplasia.

Hi there, Tracy - I'm so sorry about all this. I've merged your threads so I can see what's gone before and see that I already advised you to request a referral to Mr Nanu at the Royal Sunderland Hospital. He won't phaff about the previous surgeon, he will start from scratch and get you sorted.

Sorry to be a bit brusque but you keep asking for advice/help and I keep giving it but you aren't following up on it. You have to get assertive and not keep waiting for these chaps to opine from on high! You have rights!

For the record (for others who may be reading this) do not EVER let anyone do a second arthroscopy on your hip. If the first one doesn't work, it's time for a replacement. End of.

Thanks for all your messages.

Jo - Please don't think I was ignoring your advice. I thought I'd try one more thing and it all snowballed rather quickly. The original OS said he wouldn't consider another arthroscopy, because, like you said, if the first one hasn't worked, the second one won't, but said he'd refer me to another surgeon, who turned out to be another arthroscopy surgeon, both of these surgeons are classed as young adult hip specialists. I was a bit confused by that.

I saw the guy, he's new at the QE so I thought he wouldn't be too friendly with the other consultants yet and therefore be unbiased. He seemed quite confident that another arthroscopy would do the job. So I asked him why he recommended one when another OS said no chance. He just said he was confident and it was worth trying again even to get some pain relief. I'm desperate and I guess I wanted to believe him that I could be in less or no pain. Then someone cancelled their surgery and I got their spot with 4 days notice for surgery.

Can I ask why you shouldn't have a 2nd arthroscopy? I have asked and asked about a THR and they say I'm to get that idea out of my head because 1. I'm too young and 2. My hip is healthy. It's obviously not! How do I get an OS to believe the constant pain I'm in? All of the OS I have seen so far are the Young adult hip specialists, and all they seem to want to do is arthroscopies. I keep telling them that I have no quality of life, I can't sleep for more than 40mins, I hurt all the time, I can't weight bear, can't work, can barely leave the house, and they just don't seem to take me seriously.

My surgeon said that it's too early to tell if it's worked because it can take a year to settle. But the pain is exactly the same as before. So I think I'm going to have to wait a few months and ask my GP to refer me to Mr Nanu. But are they going to do that? I know patient choices says yes and all that, but won't they try to send me to an arthroscopy specialist at Sunderland rather than a THR specialist? Is Mr. Nanu only a THR chap? Would it be best to get a copy of my notes and scans from the QE?

Do you think the OS was right in saying that for all he couldn't get into the hip, there would be nothing to be seen in the groin side of it? Can anything go wrong on that side? Because tha'ts where the majority of the pain is. What reasons are there for not being able to dislocate the hip? If they can't dislocate it, then what can they do surgery wise?

My physio is concerned for me because of my pain levels doing the most basic exercises and doesn't want to give me anything else, so she's about to give up on me too. Could physio make things worse?

Tracy xx

Because it's like your other OS said ....
The original OS said he wouldn't consider another arthroscopy, because, like you said, if the first one hasn't worked, the second one won't

I have asked and asked about a THR and they say I'm to get that idea out of my head because 1. I'm too young and 2. My hip is healthy.
I don't believe that. If your hip is so healthy, you wouldn't be in all this pain.
How do I get an OS to believe the constant pain I'm in?
See a different surgeon! Like Nanu!
All of the OS I have seen so far are the Young adult hip specialists, and all they seem to want to do is arthroscopies
That's because they are 'enthusiasts not hip surgeons. They like doing the procedure so will tend to do it whether the treatment is truly appropriate for that patient or not!
My surgeon said that it's too early to tell if it's worked because it can take a year to settle.
Well this is true. Almost all surgeons won't touch a hip that's been scoped for at least a year.
but won't they try to send me to an arthroscopy specialist at Sunderland rather than a THR specialist?
No - because no-one does hip arthroscopies at Sunderland!
Is Mr. Nanu only a THR chap?
No but he's the best.
Would it be best to get a copy of my notes and scans from the QE?
That would be a good idea to start compiling them in readiness. Xrays as well as scans.
Do you think the OS was right in saying that for all he couldn't get into the hip, there would be nothing to be seen in the groin side of it? Can anything go wrong on that side? Because tha'ts where the majority of the pain is. What reasons are there for not being able to dislocate the hip?
Some hips just are difficult to dislocate when they are abnormal through deformities.
If they can't dislocate it, then what can they do surgery wise?
Most of the surgery done on a true FIA is outside the joint anyway so it just needs to be pulled away from the acetabulum rather than actually dislocated. Look at this to see what I mean Femoro-acetabular (FIA) or cam impingement

As parting shot in this overlong post, I would say do NOT let them do another scope. It won't work and you will just subject yourself to another year waiting to have someone else see you.
