Sorry @FionaW , I see your signature now. That's what I get for posting before my morning coffee! :mcoffee:
I only made it about 100 yards, and back, but it's a start!
Well done! I aways had to remind myself to only go as half as far as I thought I could go. Otherwise the journey back can be a challenge.

Yay! Keep those little achievements coming. I'm very happy for you!

Well, after that the home physio woman came, and showed me some new exercises, including a couple that involve putting my weight on my operated leg, and a couple that I just can't do at all yet! (The 'clam' and another sideways leg lift)... Then I had visitors... Then at some point I realised I'd climbed the stairs without my stick, accidentally, and automatically done some of it reciprocally... so I tried it again reciprocally but with my stick the next few times I used the stairs, and found I can almost do a full flight like a normal grown up!

By the end of the day I was so, so tired - what's that phrase? - bone tired. I went upstairs to use the bathroom and decided I couldn't be bothered to climb down again, so I went to bed! In bed, with my feet elevated, I realised how sore I was - really aching - with muscle pain rather than anything else. Of course my right leg muscles have hardly worked for the last year or two, and of course they're complaining now! Anyway, I was so uncomfortable in bed, even with my nighttime tramadol and some extra paracetamol, that I decided I need to take a bit of day-time pain relief still, even though I don't feel like I need it during the day, iykwim. Especially while I get used to these new exercises!

Do other people find they're much more uncomfortable during the night? At about 3am I had the sudden thought "Ok, I've had enough of this now thank you! I want it over!" But of course it doesn't work like that...

I do definitely feel like I'm making progress, but my goodness it's such hard work!

Early days yet @FionaW ! Yes, most hippies have problems getting comfortable at night. Nap during the day to make up for the sleepless nights. And if you are active on a day use the next day as a rest day. Pretty soon the rest days get shorter. But for now - pace yourself and take those meds around the clock.

Thanks @Jaycey :) I've never been much good at daytime napping, but I'm coming back to bed for a rest with my legs up, even if I'm not sleeping... (I'm here now listening to the Archers Omnibus on the iPlayer right now!) My leg muscles feel stronger and less sore today - I can now definitely do stairs reciprocally with a stick! :)

Hi @FionaW Just checking in to say hi. Looks like you're coming along nicely, so happy for you:)

Thanks for the good wishes, @JustJeff , @Jaycey and @teakea66 :) I've had a quiet day today - just doing my exercises, dozing in the sunshine and going for slightly longer stroll... Oh, and the plumber came, because our bath sprung a leak over the weekend and dripped through the kitchen ceiling! (That didn't affect me much because of course I can't get into it, but my two teenage boys weren't happy!) It's fixed now. :)

The district nurse came to check my incision, said she was happy it is healing nicely, and discharged me. Here it is this evening, day 13:

Just checking in to share a real achievement: I have had a shower in my over-the-bath shower! :yahoo: I had one last week in my friend's walk-in shower, but it is such a palaver arranging lifts, travelling there, etc. that I was keen to be able to shower at home... But the bath edge is of course a significant obstacle, and I haven't dared try before. However, the last couple of days I have been practicing new exercises that have me standing for a few seconds on my operated leg, so my muscles have been strengthening and I was at last confident that I could bear my weight for that brief moment stepping over the edge. I set myself up with a plastic step close to my fitted grab rail, stood on that, bent my knee backwards rather than up, and stepped over. Yay! Getting out was also fine, and that shower was wonderful! After just two showers in two weeks, it feels soooooo good to know I can now wash when I like! :happydance:

Congrats on your achievement...that's such a huge step back to normalcy!
I am no yet permitted to take a shower or bath yet, but I cannot wait...and neither can my wife lol. I see my surgeon tomorrow so will see what he says.

Thanks @Machine ! You're right it feels like a huge step - I didn't like not being able to shower! I hope your surgeon gives you the go-ahead tomorrow... I don't see mine for another month+ so I def wouldn't be able to hold out that long! :heehee:

Thanks @Jaycey :) In between these highlights, I am really taking it easy, resting most of the time when I'm not doing my exercises, and eating well. I have been lucky enough to have a good friend come to stay, who has been cooking good meals and looking after the house so I can look after myself. She and my boys are also helping me, though I get more independent all the time. I do feel like I am making good progress, but that's because I'm sort of dedicating myself to my recovery, not trying to do anything else - which is very unusual for me!

Like dying and going to heaven. Who knew that such a small everyday thing could be such a big blessing? Make a note of those little things---they turn out to be the biggest and best things of all.

Yep that's what I've always said! Count up the myriad accomplishments and you need not worry about bad stuff.

You are soooo right, @PuppyLove , @bottomshollow and @JustJeff ! That shower didn't just make my day; it made my week! :snork:
I'm also pleased to have managed slightly longer walks for each of the last 4 days - about 300 yards today. That's still only a tiny distance, but it's about 250 yards further than I have managed to walk any time in the last 4-5 months. :)

Fiona, you decide what is a good distance or not! It's 5 times your previous record! That's a fabulous accomplishment!

Hi guys, I have a question, and I wonder if any of you know the answer?! Nothing important; I'm just curious...!

I've been trying to work out what approach the surgeon used. As far as I can tell, from the shape of my incision and certain websites, it was posterolateral... broken link removed: https://www2.aofoundation.org/wps/portal/surgery?showPage=approach&contentUrl=srg%2F31%2F04-Approaches%2F2008%2F31_Posterolateral_2010.jsp&bone=Femur&segment=Proximal&approach=Posterolateral+approach&Language=en [[WARNING: this link is pretty graphic! Don't click if you don't want full gory surgical details!]]
Websites seem to suggest that (some of?) my leg muscle(s) have been cut - specifically my gluteal. But it doesn't feel like it at all. I was expecting to have my leg significantly weakened because of cut muscle(s), but it feels as strong as ever - in fact stronger, after a week or two of physio and walking.

So, if my muscles have been cut, would I feel it? Or is it possible to have cut muscles that repair almost immediately? Or must it mean that the surgeon used a different approach and didn't cut my muscles?

TIA to anyone who can satisfy my curiosity! :)
