THR Well here I am on the Other Side... :)

No, like you I'm taking pain meds to stay on top of any possible pain, though I have sometimes reduced doses. For the last couple of days, I have taken 2 tramadol morning and bedtime, and 1 at lunch and tea time - plus paracetamol, which have also been prescribed. I have just given myself a scare with the tramadol tho: I took 2 at about 11pm and another 2 at about 4 am (checking with the nursing staff), hoping they'd help me sleep, although I had no pain. I am so tired and haven't slept at all. But instead, every time I started to drop off to sleep, I felt like I was stopping breathing - they relaxed me so far I feel like I'm only just able to draw breath - but they haven't made me sleep. :( The nurses came and took my temp, BP and SAT, and they're all completely normal, so I know it's just exhaustion -but it is SUCH a horrible feeling being jerked awake with a boost of adrenaline each time you're about to nod off.

I'm glad you're doing well Kevin, and I hope your heart rate settles so you can go home soon. :)

So sorry to hear your latest news. Were you icing your op leg when you were home? Better to have things checked out but swelling is a reality in the early post op days. And please don't try and reduce doses of your pain meds now. You need to stay ahead of that pain. Hope you can get some !

Thanks Jaycey. I'm well ahead of that pain at the mo - I haven't got any yet, except some v minor bruising coming out on my bottom! I'm under no illusions tho - I know it'll come at some point. Tramadol time in about an hour...

A question about icing... How do you keep your bed from getting wet?! I can't do it sitting down...

At the hospital the bags they use don't seem to leak or sweat much, so no issue with getting the bed wet. For home the doctor ordered me a cold therapy contraption that circulates cold water through a rubber membrane that I wrap around my waist and it drapes down over the hip.

I ordered a six pack of gel ice packs and rotated them throughout the day. If you wrap the gel pack in a tea towel there is minimal sweating.

You're better equipped than me! I have picnic ice packs, which don't fit at all well, and ice cube bags which are better.

The good news is, I'm not infected and I'm going home again! Woo hooo!

Yahoooo! Glad you are getting out of that place! Safe journey home @FionaW !

Wonderful news, so happy for you:)

Thank you! I am soooooo relieved! I am shattered now tho, and feel set back to slightly before I came home last time. I'm going to bed now, catch you all later.

@FionaW I've been experiencing exactly the same thing you did with the twitching and muscle spasms in my operated leg starting the overnight after Day 5 post-op. I was uncomfortable on my back and having trouble falling asleep anyway, and then suddenly this sensation started repeating over and over - just as I would dose off - and I'd be awake again. I likened it to when a dog shakes water off and you can kind of watch the "vibration" of the shake travel from head to the very tip of the tail. For over 2 hours this went on and then I started imagining that I was having trouble breathing. I started to cry, which woke my hubby, and after he talked me down from a total meltdown, he got some ice on my thigh, put a pillow under my knee and held my hand til things settled a bit and I slept. It was suggested to me that this was possibly the result of my pain meds not being right - which could be because I know they aren't. I suspect the cause is just the muscle's response to the trauma of being stretched and shoved and packed back in to hold the joint - most likely some of it being "assigned" a position it had not held since being created LOL! I can't say the twitches and spasms have stopped entirely, but they've diminished in intensity and I'm catching up on sleep - so not as critical. Anyway, in case you're still experiencing this, it seems common and does appear to subside after a few days. Cheers

@FionaW , glad you were able to return home. If you're having trouble with ice packs, you can make your own with ziplock bags, water and rubbing alcohol. Google "DIY ice packs". I made mine with a foodsaver to minimize the chance of leakage, but you could double bag them.

It's interesting to see how the ice packs vary from one country to another too.
Here in France, when I got mine they came with synthetic pouches which stop any liquid coming through.
They are just thick (thin) enough to let the ice work effectively, but stop any possibility of getting "burnt" also.

As Jaycey suggested though, simply wrapping the ice in a tea-towel is a good idea.

Thanks for your posts, moms4tne and puppylove. :) We're almost twins! Puppy, I'm not certain what day it is today, but I think it's the 12th... Does that mean your surgery is tomorrow?! Good luck! Moms, you're just a day or two ahead of me :)

Moms, the zappy, jolty, twitchy sensations have subsided, but the shortness of breath continues. It comes on 20-30 mins after I take the tramadol. It's manageable if I just take 1, but it's really unpleasant and scary if I take 2. It is shortness of breath - or maybe strictly speaking shallowness of breath - plus a full feeling in my airway. It could be the tramadol on its own, or it could be its interaction with my prescription anti-inflammatory (etorycoxib, a cox-2 NSAID), which I started taking (as directed) on discharge from hospital... Anyway, it's frightening and unpleasant and means I don't feel able to take my full dose of painkillers, so I'll call my GP surgery when they open this morning.

Puppy, I've ordered proper medical ice packs from Amazon, but meanwhile I'm improvising with camping ice packs and frozen peas, wrapped in a tea towel! Ziplock bags are a good idea - I'll see if I can get some. :)

This is day 6 (I think! Counting surgery day as day 1) and I'm really not feeling too bad. I slept a lot yesterday after I got home (12-13 hours), including some unbroken stretches of 2-3 hours, so I'm satisfied with that! My bruising pain peaked before bedtime, probably because I got up and went downstairs for my evening meal and sat up or walked for over a hour. I need to take care!

@FionaW So it's possible I wasn't imagining the shallow breathing I thought I was experiencing. Wow! It is frightening, especially in the dark of night. I had trouble with the twitching again last night - how I hate sleeping on my back, but trying to side sleep again after my one good nap on Sat was excruciating. I think it may have been the fluid in the bandage issue. My incision feels much better today after being cleaned and redressed yesterday. Even itches a bit - good sign of more healing. So I might brave the side position again later just to see.

Yeah I tried the side position again without the wedge. Nope not yet. I'll check again from time to time, waiting for my natural sleep cycles to reappear.

Hello again! Checking in to update. I'm pretty cheerful today :)

Side sleeping: I have only tried turning onto my side for very short periods of time. I can't lie on my incision side - it hurts - but I have had to roll the other way a few times to get my dressing changed so thought I'd try that to relieve the pressure. The rehab home visitor said I could if I was careful and stuck a pillow between my legs to stop my operated leg rolling down/crossing over. But it feels very precarious, so I'm not doing it much - just when being on my back gets intolerable. I'm getting more used to back sleeping: I put an extra pillow under my knees and that takes the pressure off. Lying with both legs elevated is also OK for 30-60 mins.

Anyway, generally I had a better night last night and a pretty good day today. I managed about 8 hours sleep in roughly 2 hour bursts, on top of the 4-5 hours I slept yesterday afternoon. The shortness of breath was pretty horrible, and at about 3am I ended up finding a 3-year-old salamol inhaler (which probably didn't work anyway!) and some menthol chest rub, and sleeping upright for about 90 mins. My doc today said it was probably a side effect of the tramadol, and has prescribed co-dydramol instead. I have only taken 1 of those so far, and it made me a bit breathless too, but not so badly... We'll see how I get on with it tonight.

I have remarkably little pain. Bruising is the worst of it, and I can feel it throbbing after I walk around. The incision itself occasionally stings a bit, but less than a graze would. I have a lot of numbness on my thigh, so I wonder whether they've killed off a lot of nerve endings?! If so, it won't hurt so much now, but might when they start to grow back?! My total pain relieve prescription is now 4 x 500/10 co-dydramol plus 4 x 500 paracetamol, which doesn't seem much, but so far I have been fine. However, since I got home, I have been spending 22-22.5 hours lying down, and 2-3 of those with my 'nose above toes', so maybe that helps? Ice helps too, as you all know.

I am moving around too. I've done my bed exercises twice today, chair ones twice, standing ones once, got up for the loo a few times, got up to a chair near my bed for lunch and downstairs for my evening meal, climbed a flight of 12 stairs down and up, and walked outside a few metres. I have walked very short distances (12-15 feet) with 1 stick and (6-8 feet) with no stick. My physio visitor pointed out that it's better to do exercises and walking slowly and mindfully than quickly and wrongly! I have noticed that I have a lot of bad habits to break after walking with a heavy limp for about a year - especially my habit of transferring most of my weight off my 'bad' leg and essentially standing on my good one like a flamingo!

My other bit of news today is that the district nurse came to check my dressing and actually removed the steri-strips across my incision. I have no stitches or staples or the top layer of the incision, and have apparently been glued! She says I'm healing well. All in all a much better day. :) What a difference a day makes!

Bye for now, hip-hoppers! :)

Well last night I discovered the hard way the importance of taking regular meds and staying on top of your pain! I'd been doing well and was pretty much pain free on 6 tramadol plus 6 paracetamol per day, but because of the breathlessness thing, my GP switched me to co-dydramol, and prescribed 4 of those (500/10) plus 4 paracetamol per day. I had a long gap of 9 hours while I waited for the new prescription and had only paracetamol, and then took a co-d, but it wasn't enough and I couldn't take anything else for 3 hours. Worse still, the co-d also made me breathless, and gave me palpitations too! :(

By bedtime, I was hurting all over. My R heel was really sore and my sternum and shoulders felt like I'd been beaten up. In desperation, I took a tramadol, and found that taking just 1 didn't make me breathless, and relieved the pain. When I woke this morning I took another one, again with good results, so I think I'm going to ditch the co-dydramol, and go back to tramadol plus paracetamol. Does anyone know whether it's ok to take 1 tram 8 times a day, rather than 2 tram 4 times a day, as it's been prescribed? Or should I go back to my GP to check?

I'm up and down like a yo-yo at the mo: good day, bad day, good day, bad day...!

@FionaW I .always would always check with either your doctor or your nurse if you have one who visits you at home. I am on 50 mg of Tramadol I only take 2 before bedtime..sometimes only one depending if i had the in home pt that day. Mine says to take..1 to 2 every 6 hours not to exceed 6 in 24 hours. I only take Tylenol during day and that if needed at night. Best of luck to you...Sue

Day 7 - or is it 8? - this time last week I was on my way to the hospital...!

I've woken up feeling good today. 6+ hours sleep including one uninterrupted 4 hour stretch! My muscles are crying out for more movement and exercise... Up until the day before my op I was swimming 4-5 times a week (though I couldn't walk!) and I'm starting to miss it. Which must mean I'm getting better! I've been lying flat on my bed fidgeting various groups of muscles, pretending to do back crawl or 'cycle' in the water, but it's not really satisfying my urge to MOVE! I think I'll try a little walk today... :)
