Brilliant Deb, yup patience really is the hardest to grasp. Just make sure you over stretch and knock yourself back.

You will make it eventually. I also have little patience for the length of time required to get better and part of it is -I think- because at age 69 I feel I only have a few good years left and this darn hip has taken out almost a whole year of fun activity for me. It could be worse though - I just have to keep telling myself that. :gaah:
I also found that pushing myself and then backing off and resting has worked. I overdid it yesterday on a rough bush trail and so I am resting today. Best of luck!

@wcgirl I love emoticons! Yes, I'm coming up on 4 weeks so hopefully my energy will increase soon. Good news, I have been sleeping better for the last few nights, so that should help somewhat.

@Jaycey thanks for your advice, yes, will only do as much as I'm comfortable with doing. Have to get out there everyday from now on, need to build up my muscles again!

@GrannyDi you are so right! I'm going to be 61 in November and agree that I cannot and do not want to live on the sidelines any longer! One never knows when life will change again, so every day should be lived to its fullest.

Just wondering if it's okay at 4 weeks post op to moisturizer my incision. It is so dry! If ok, what does anyone suggest to use? Vitamin E oil? Or a scar cream, such as Derma-e scar gel?

Hi @DebraR I will be 5 weeks on Monday and was just wondering whether I should start massaging my scar with Bio Oil.

Can anyone chime in on moisturizers for scars as asked in previous post? Also, walked up to the park and back 13 houses there and back, so 26 houses!!! Using cane on right and hubby's arm on left. Tired and sore now, so took two Tylenol.

@DebraR I would not suggest using anything on your scar at this point. It will quickly fade. I used moisturiser on my legs post op but never over the scar. No need to massage your scar either. That's a bit of a wives tale.

Well done on your walking! Great progress.

Hi @DebraR You are doing great with your walking I am probably doing about the same about 13 houses.I just walked downstairs normally for the first time in months.I didn't plan it I was deep in thought and was half way down before I realised what I was doing. All these little things are amazing as far as I am concerned

@Jaycey thanks for your response. Any particular reason I shouldn't be moisturizing? Chance of infection maybe?

Yes, chance of infection if your wound is not totally healed. But you can moisturise avoiding putting anything directly on the scar - at least that's what I did.

Thanks! I will wait...

Good morning @DebraR. Snow is coming to our great white north soon and I am hoping I will be able to ski. You are probably wishing you could spend the winter somewhere warm. :surfer: I haven't been reading or posting much here as most of the posts are for the first few weeks after surgery. I want to know how people are feeling at 7 months but I have found it hard to locate those types of posts as most people leave when they are better. I know I will need to get my left hip done eventually but now I am scared. I was not the least bit afraid for the first op but now I am worried about a complication. My vets wife has drop foot and cant walk properly now.
There are the feelings of aging and life coming to an end too soon and too quickly.
I will be 70 soon. Well this is a pretty depressing post -not what you want to hear I'm sure.
I guess I want to hear that you have a successful second hip and life gets back to what you want it to be. Then I may be more brave about doing the other old hip.
So keep on posting please -the good the bad and the ugly!
Best to you.
Diane

@Granny Di and @DebraR gosh Diane I had the exact same feelings yesterday. I think there is always some depression after joint replacement as we yearn for what once was. I have spent the last ten years on pain killers, limited mobility, having three joint replacements, angry about what I can't do, watching life pass me by, and wondering just how many years left. But I am in a much better place today. No painkillers, walking straight, more mobility, and like you am much aware that my other hip needs to be done sometime. Debra is quite the inspiration as I am not able to wrap my head around another replacement. For the most part I have stopped thinking about the hip. Gosh I never thought I would say that. Lol. I have to be careful with the unstable back issue as I too have had the drop foot when the disc presses on the nerve. So many people have had complications and I think of Legin often. Nerve pain is a difficult and life changing but he truly lives life with gusto. We have come a long way. I love hearing about your adventures Diane as you take us along your hiking and biking trips. Blessings have come my way too. My daughter had a new baby last week. A precious baby boy. I was able to be with her and help her at the hospital. I did take my walker with a seat as it is quite the distance from the parking lot, to her room, to the cafeteria, and back again. I did ok. Sometimes we need to vent our feelings, we are most aware of others with more problems, but if we don't share I think we become even more limited. So I count my bonesmart friends as truly one of the reasons I came out on the other side of this replacement. I know we don't talk as often and truly wish we lived near each other. We would have a grand time! Enjoy your first snow...my favorite season is winter. Go for my six month check up Thursday. Hugs, good thoughts, and smiles! Barb

Thanks so much @sunbunny! I needed an uplifting message just now. so excited to hear about the newest addition -a sweet baby girl! So life goes on and we do have to count our blessings and I was neglecting that thinking to much about another surgery someday and feeling lonely as I am not in good enough shape to hike with my friends yet. I look to DebraR for inspiration. Oops here we are threadjacking! Hope you don't mind Debra?

@GrannyDi and @sunbunny

Sorry have not posted anything in a little while. Congratulations, Sunbunny, on the new addition to your family! I am humbled by you guys thinking I am so brave and an inspiration, but I honestly did not have a choice but to go ahead with my 2nd hip surgery. Could not do much with my new right hip because of the pain in the left one. I have felt the same as you both-where has my life gone? I am turning 61 this week, and feel I am on the "back nine". It doesn't help my mood that my son will be moving into his own place in 2 weeks. I walked up to the park yesterday and got so sad thinking about the days when I used to bring him there and play on the swings, etc. It seems so long ago but also like yesterday. He won't be far, but I'm still feeling sad. As far as my hips are concerned, they are coming along, I feel I'm getting stronger and doing more each day. 5 weeks today and feel I should be walking further but am trying to just let my body guide me. I too sometimes can't believe I gave two artificial hips, but realize how lucky I am to have them. I wish you both a happy, peaceful week.

Hi @DebraR, I think you are smart to listen to your body in regards to how much walking to do. Our bodies have a way of letting us know when we are doing too much.

I can only imagine how you feel about your son moving out; I am not at that place yet but I am not looking forward to that day when I have to go through it. It will be a transition for sure but I'm glad for you that your son won't be moving too far away. Sounds like he will be close enough that you can still see him often so I am happy for you in that regard. Some of these kids nowadays move clear across the country for jobs. I am hoping when the time comes that mine will find employment nearby and stay local as I want to be part of my grandchildren's lives once that time comes.

In regards to the age thing, I think there is a chronological age that we can't control but a biological age that we do have some control over with our lifestyle choices and healthy living. You look fit and healthy in your profile pic and with your two new hips, I bet you are feeling younger than you have in years. Age really is just a number; the rest is up to us and you are off to a great start to a new active and healthy hipster lifestyle! :)
