I'd like some opinions on travelling on a plane a little less than 4 months post-op on my left hip. Right hip will be 10 months post-op. The fares are good right now. I know that no one can predict if I will be ok, but if I have an uneventful recovery, is there any reason that maybe I should not book a flight right now?

Are you considering a long haul flight or just a short one? Four months out is probably enough time but if you are unsure confirm with your surgeon's office.

BTW - can you please put your second surgery date in your signature? Thanks!
 
From Montreal to Florida-3.5 hours. Sorry, don't know how to add my 2nd surgery date, but it is October 5, 2015.

I added your second surgery date to your signature. I would not think a short flight would be a problem for you. You may need assistance at the airport. Lugging a heavy suitcase could be a problem so early out. But all these issues can be addressed. Ask for an aisle seat - maybe bulkhead so there is extra leg room for you.
 
Agreed about seating request. But look at you as a major part of this thing is how you feel and view things the fact you are planning such a trip says it all. Go girl

Go for it but ask for assistance and they will wheel chair you through quickly. I had to ask for a wheel chair coming home from hiking in Patagonia and it was the best way to go -so fast.
 
Here it is 1:22am in Montreal. Went to bed at 10:30am (actually sleeping on the couch). Fell asleep right away but woke up at 12:30am and cannot get comfortable. This couch is certainly not ideal for sleeping as the area where my upper body is has sunken as this is the spot where hubby sits every evening! The chair I rented is no good as it does not fully recliner like I thought it would so I will be sending it back. Think maybe I will try to sleep In our bed tonight upstairs, but my experience from my right hip surgery in March was that it was much too high and soft and could not manage it until at least the one month mark. This sucks. This couch is really hard to get out of from lying position and dread every time I need to get up for the bathroom! Sigh, moan, complain......

The night time can be the worst. Everything seems amplified and I often felt it was unfair. Its one reason why I took up learning Spanish, hola whilst yawning is a sound that must be aired in public. Hope you got some sleep

Oh you poor girl! Maybe you can get a platform made to use to climb into bed? A couple of sheets of plywood would raise you up. I take zopiclone to help me sleep if my mind is working overtime. It works for me.
It snowed here last night. I am not ready for snow yet. May the dream fairies be with you.
 
The PT is coming tomorrow I will ask her if maybe a little step stool, like you suggest, would do the trick. I will grab a few zzz's this afternoon if I can. Intestinal issues are getting me down, most people have the opposite problem to what I have. Anyway, I am taking Bio-K probiotics so hopefully that will help normalize things. Not much of an appetite either. I eat about half of what my sweet hubby makes for me.

So sorry to hear you are still having tummy issues @DebraR. I do hope you can get some relief soon. I do agree, with the others, that a step stool (or puppy step) may help you get in and out of bed. Also, if your bed is too soft, maybe hubby can go to DIY store and pick up a piece of plywood to slide under your mattress, or possibly a twin size memory foam topper (just for your side of the bed). This may give you a little more support. Best wishes for a better night's sleep and calmer tummy.
 
Nurse just came to take the staples out. I had 30, she took out 23, so 7 still to come out probably on Monday. There was one area that was bleeding a bit so she put some polysporin on it and covered everything with steristrips and a dressing on top. She said that that one area was not closed because that is where the apparatus is? Anyway, I am concerned about infection, should I be?

Did the nurse indicate that there was any sign of infection? If not, I wouldn't be overly concerned about it, at this point. It is still early and the incision is still healing. Just take it easy, try not to get the incision area wet and I'm sure you will be fine. Good luck.
 
Thanks @Nana757 no she did not say anything about any infection, I guess my concern is that the polysporin and the dressing will keep it from healing as the air will not get at it and maybe an infection could happen.

My incision was covered until it was completely healed. But I didn't have any sign of leakage or bleeding. Did the bleeding come from where she removed a staple? If so, the polysporin should be okay. But let's tag @Jamie or @Jaycey and get their opinion.
 
I think you are well sutured inside that incision. and the external parts that you can see shouldn't be cause for concern. What did the nurse say?? and I used a small step stool beside my bed for the first 2.5 weeks post op. it's helped immensely to get into bed. good luck!
 
@Nana757 yes, when she took the staples out in that area, that area was not closed. She put on lots of polysporin and steristrips plus a dressing on top.

What an odd thing to say. The "apparatus" doesn't slow down wound healing. Wounds close up in their own time. The bleeding was most likely from the staple removal. It's not bleeding or draining now, is it? The steri strips should hold the skin together nicely while it continues to heal. I see no reason to worry about infection. Just treat it carefully and keep it dry until it closes. That means if you shower, cover it with a waterproof dressing or plastic wrap. It should close up fairly quickly.
 
@Jamie she was a French nurse so she didn't actually say apparatus, but my husband translated and she meant the prosthesis. Don't think it's bleeding now or anything, at least not through the dressing she put on. Well, nothing I can do, except maybe know the symptoms I should be looking out for-which I assume would be bleeding, oozing, heat coming from that area? Anything else I should be looking out for? I don't even want to know what happens if it gets infected, that scares me!

I'm sure it will be OK but yip keep an eye, for changes in colour but also heat eminating. Have a grand weekend lass
