TKR Turning a Corner with My New Knee

I'm glad you don't take the crutch with you up the ladder. ;)

It's a long recovery and yours has seemed even longer, but it sounds like you're slowly getting there.

Another month to discuss a possible MUA. Hang in there. But not from the edge of the roof!

Julie :)

It's funny how sometimes you get a great improvement that seems to have come about overnight. It's been a long time coming, but I'm happy to see you experiencing positive progress!

thanks @tigz ' @PolarBear60 it has been a long time for sure..something l never expected,,my granddaughter saids l wobble when l walk,,it makes her laugh,,but a little walking l can do,,l still have some swelling,,how can they tell l need a MUA from a xray or do they just assume little ROM means scar tissue ?? l don't get on this site as much l get jealous of other peoples progress,,lol,, not that l am not happy for them,,l am,,but l want it to be me lol,,l 'm hoping things keep on improving ,,good for my mind lol

Great to hear you're able to do the stairs.

When you find out how they can tell you need an MUA from the X-ray, let me know.

7 months 1 week update,,still using crutch part time,,hardly any knee pain but joint still looks swollen to me,,l wear a sleeve of some kind every day on my knee,,ROM is still less then 90 degrees,,l saw a doctor on Monday ,,l thought we would discuss a MUA instead she said work it and see me in a year ?? l had told her l thought its been getting better by the month,,l mention if she thought l needed a MUA and she said you don't want one of those ?? so here l sit on the fence ?? l am guilty of not doing any stretching or exercise since l started working again,,

Been wondering how you've been doing. Is your knee still warm to the touch? Mine is at times (not all the time).

I don't think we need formal exercise at this stage of the game... living is enough exercise as it is! I do still use my peddles to loosen the knee up a bit for a few minutes in the morning and after work.

Is there another doctor at the VA you can get another opinion from?

~Julie

I usually advise waiting longer before considering having a MUA. However, since your knee seems to have been stuck just below 90 degrees for a long time now, I think a MUA could possibly help.
I agree with tigz - it's time to ask for a second opinion from another surgeon.

thanks @tigz &@celle for the advice,,l think l will wait till after the new year then find a surgeon who will even talk to me,,last two appointments lve had l have talked to a lady who must be their mouth piece ,,l was thinking l might have to go to a different V.A hospital for help,,even the one time l got to see a surgeon he said they dropped the ball on me not getting any therapy for 7 weeks ,,hopefully another month will bring better results,,right now that's all l got to hang on to,,

yes @tigz it is warm to the touch sometimes but not always,,it does not look like the other knee at all does your ??

The left TKR definitely doesn't look like the right bony knee.

well 8 months in,,in the house l do not need my crutch ,,outside different story,,it depends how far l am going,,haven't dared to go to the mailbox without it yet but feel like the time is getting closer where l can,,my mailbox is at the end of my drive which is about a 100 ' long,,my knee seldom hurts ,,l hunted deer with a crutch under one arm,,never seen any either time l was out ..but l made it out,,l am hanging in there but would l do it again,,???? now doubtful,,,we will see after l get my year in

You've had such a time of it... sounds like things are looking up a bit, slowly but surely!

yes @tigz slow is the word,,l have made 2 trips to my mailbox now without my crutch,,l find myself using it less now by the day,,l will keep posting monthly till my knee feels anywhere near normal again,,wouldn't this be great if its my last post,,lol

At least come back and tell us your knee feels normal, so I'd love to see at least one more post.

well been 9 months now,,my crutch has been in my jeep now for a month or so,,l hate shopping but give me a cart to hang on to l think l walk ok,,with out not as good,,walking a half mile aday in the woods with my dog using hiking sticks,,hoping the uneven ground will help loosen my knee up,,l dread the thought of ever seeing another surgeon,,

well 10 months no improvements,,l need either a pair of hiking sticks or a shopping cart to walk very far,,and very far is not very far ,,knee stiffens up,,still wearing some kind of a sleeve on it every day,,discouraging,,

@sabbath - It sounds as if the time has come for you to look for a second opinion.

You need a surgeon who specialises in revision surgery and who has no connection at all -with your present surgeon - not professionally, not in the golf club, not in the "old boys" club. You might have to go out of town to find the right person.

Such a surgeon will be able to look at your knee with new eyes, uninfluenced by anything your current surgeon says. These surgeons are used to looking at problem knees and might spot something that you surgeon has not noticed. That you see a revision surgeon does not inevitably mean that you will need a revision, but his experience and advice could be invaluable.

@Celle thank you for the advise ,,l have to see my primary physician this next month and am requesting she sends my xrays to another V.A hospital to have my xrays read by a specialist,,maybe then l will know for sure,,believe me l hope that l just got to give it more time ,,but maybe l got blinders on too,,??

I agree with Celle---you need to get a second opinion on your knee and let somebody take a look and give you a fresh perspective.

I certainly agree! See somebody who can give you an unbiased view of what is going on, and what needs to be done.
