TKR Tough Going <

I would do crutches if I could, but it's pretty much out of the question with my wrists. I sprained my ankle 2 years ago and it was a mess trying to get around without crutches. I think I even had to hop a little on my bum knee. I wish I could look cool with a cane, like lady Violet on Downton Abbey.

I really didn't want to use my cane in public, but when we went to church I realized that 1/4 of the folks there had canes! I REALLY wanted a "cute" one, but DH picked it out and it was "functional", not decorative! :heehee:
I used it for several weeks, or as my OS instructed, until I no longer limped. This, too shall pass!

I hear you. I imagine even the walker is not the easiest. The key, I think, with the cane is that by the point you're ready for it you don't need to put much weight on it, it's more for stability, gait and security. My PT showed me how to use the cane the right way.

How long did it take @Thesoutherncook southerncook? I've been walking around the house today like Frankenstein! No walker!
That's how you start! Since you're inside and safe (and can touch stuff for support) practice heel-toe walking very slowly without the limp. I still Frankenstein my first few steps.

Until you can walk without limping. :bored: As Clipless said, practice heel/toe walking and lengthen your stride. Better to use the cane than fall. ( You know the saying, "Pride goeth before a fall".)

I agree. I used the cane for several weeks. There are still a few days when I'm walking on unstable ground like picking apples that I will use it. I thought about putting red flames on it like a hot rod!

My granny used to have a cane with a flask! I don't know what happened to it. Probably one of my cousins adopted it!

I came about my cane in an odd way.

I was at an art and antique show as a vendor, with my bestie. We were showing our beadwork and a lady who owned a local gallery had stopped by our tent to chat.

About that time, a huge thundercloud came up beyond the ridge and the wind started blowing like mad. Then the rain started and we were grabbing our wares and frantically putting them in our bags so they wouldn't be ruined by the rain.

About that time, a huge gust of wind blew our tent inside out and all three of us made a "run" for it to find shelter in the porch of a farmhouse that was on the property. The lady who owned the gallery also owned a cane. For some reason she left it under our tent and walked to the farmhouse with us, leaving it behind.
When the weather lifted, we all went back to our tents to assess the damages
( others, such as potters and woodturners, were not as fortunate as we to be able to protect there wares)

When we went back to our tent, it was an awful mess, but we were able to salvage everything but the tent. We were practically up to our knees in mud.

I looked down and saw a cane. I looked and looked but never found the woman.
I threw the cane in my van and headed home. I remembered that she gave me her card. I tried calling. No answer. I knew she had my card. She never called.

A few weeks later, I went to her gallery. It was locked. I forgot about the cane and it rode in the back of my van for six years. And here we are!

It's not a sexy cane...its blue metal in sort of a basket weave pattern. I think it matches the color of my phone! If I'm going to have to use one for awhile, I'd like one that better suits my personality.

A word about walkers...they should have cupholders and baskets!

Love your cane's story. Much more classy than my drugstore variety, although mine IS blue ( to match my eyes, said my DH who was trying to dig himself out of a hole! ) My daughter tied a basket on my walker so I could carry "stuff"! I actually found it very useful! OMG, I sound like an OLD person! :rofsign:

I have a variety of canes. One in the car, one in my garage and another that only sees the inside of my house. Guess I just want to be sure I have one if I need it. The inside house cane is wood and was my favorite, it belonged to best friend's dad before he passed.

I had a cloth bag velcroed onto my walker. Very helpful.

You mean one like this? Apparently known as a "tippler's stick"!

Yes, it was something like that!
Except, I think it was metal.
I am getting ready for my Ortho appt and I feel like I could use a stiff drink! Better to pray. I don't want to hear the MUA speech. But if I do, I shall quietly listen and respond with, "I want to think about it." And I want to be treated with respect. I have PT this afternoon, too. (With boundaries, of course) What a day!

Well if that wasn't the most bizarre follow up, I don't know what was! The doc walks in, asks me to get up on a table, checks my ROM, says "You're borderline." Then says "I think we should do a MUA. I take pictures of your knee in flexion so you can see it. I just had a total hip cancel tomorrow and I need something to do."
I'm thinking,"Well you're not going to be doing me." I said, "I'd like a little more time."
He said "I'll give you two weeks. Come back and impress me."
I don't think I'm going back.

They didn't do xrays. He said that my Physical therapist sent him a note about me. I'm going to PT today and asking him what kind of notes is he sending. I just want to see his face when I ask him.

Well done for asking for more time before contemplating a MUA.

I think you should probably go back for your next appointment. As long as you're making progress (even slow progress) there will still not be any need for a MUA.

It's your knee. Only you can say what will happen to it. Your surgeon can't force you to have a MUA if you don't want it.

I only had X-rays at the 6-week appointment and the one-year follow up.

I might go, I'm just blowing off steam. He took xrays at my two week follow up. The reason I might not go is I don't want to hear the negative talk about never having a normal life unless I have a MUA. He obviously believes in the "window".

Oh my . Isn't it really strange the difference in how the surgeons are ! I had x-rays at my 6wk and again when I went back when I decided on the MUA. I did not have them last week . The MUA was never pushed but rather discussed . With all the trauma my poor knee had prior to my TKR I already knew adhesions may be a factor. I agreed with the suggestion and it was best for me. My PT sends their notes and reports to my OS but I always know what it contains ! I guess I am thankful for the way my case is handled with the OS and his staff and my PT.
Hang in there ! Like everyone says it is YOUR knee and you know your body better that anyone :)
