THR Tomgirl got the T Shirt

I was cleared to drive at 5 weeks but waited a couple of weeks more because I found it uncomfortable to move from pedal to pedal. Didn't inform the insurers or DVLA.

Feeling a bit annoyed, a friend in London aged 68 has been to see consultant about having THR, but he told her to wait a while longer as quote '' the replacements only last about 10 years'' Doh. Will get her to join BS.

the replacements only last about 10 years
Bit of a dinosaur that one! Tell your friend to try and get a referral to someone more up to date with the technology. If she is anywhere near Surrey I can give her a recommendation.

Ten years, what?
Seriously outdated info....:what:

Well I can give you a name in Kent as well. I had my LTHR when I lived there!

Thanks @Jaycey that would be great. Just an afterthought, on the consultant my friend saw, perhaps the replacements he does only last 10 years or am I being too unkind???

I don't think there are any implants that only last 10 years these days. This is very old school thinking but unfortunately there are still many consultants out there who just can conform to change.

My LTHR surgeon was Helmut Zahn. He has a great bedside manner and is someone you can easily talk to.

If your friend can afford a private consultation I would recommend that route. During her consultation she can just say she can't afford the op privately and he will put her on the NHS list. I have gone this route twice. She just needs to have her GP refer her to his private practice.

Hi @Layla yes I read it that's why I felt really puzzled about my friends consultant telling her 10 years. perhaps more from the medical profession should read BS. I'll get my friend to read it when she joins BS.

Yesterday had my 2nd session with trainer back at the gym, felt great getting back there. He increased the resistance on the bike a little and the time but this was OK. Interesting for me to note that being on the bike before the op my right knee was at 45 degree angle instead of straight ahead and I would lean towards to the left. Now knee is straight ahead and back is upright. And no aches or pain. Rest of the exercises - using the weights were fine, slight increase in weights and reps from last monday and no side effects today. Aim to continue same for a couple of weeks then trainer said he might introduce new stuff for my hip. Back there on monday, so pleased there is life after THR. And now the snow is almost gone might just get out for a walk along the river tomorrow. But must must catch up on my work, deadlines for 31st Jan are rapidly approaching.

Bravo for getting back to the gym! I've been looking forward to that too. I see my trainer tomorrow for the first time since my hip precautions expired this week, so I'm looking forward to slowly expanding my range of exercises. I'm not going to do anything too hip-intensive until after I see my OS again at the end of the month, but it feels good to get the old body back in motion.

Motion does feel good after being laid up. Sounds like you have a sensible trainer @Tomgirl.

Hi @jaydub63 I was just so excited at being able to walk from the car to the gym last Monday - kept thinking it's not hurting wow. And yes just taking things sensible and slowly, no setbacks allowed!!!
@MammaT trainer has been absolute godsend, my hubby goes to see him and he's helped him too. last week we took him and his wife out for Sunday lunch, he's been such a positive influence with our health.

Such a great report. It does feel wonderful to reintroduce one more piece of normalcy back into your life. I was a couch potato before my first THR and joined gym afterwards so I don't have a comparison for my current progression. I like and trust my trainer but also know my limitations better than he does, so I have set parameters each time and have said no or required him to do modifications of some exercises. Sounds like you and @jaydub63 have the same great setup! Have fun but be ready to pull back on the reins when needed!

What a wonderful update @Tomgirl
Happy to hear you're jumping back into life doing what you like to do.
Hope you're able to sneak in that walk along the river, sounds lovely.
Best of luck catching up on deadlines and warm wishes for a great weekend!

:goodpost: So glad you are already seeing the benefits of surgery.
I am also grateful that things steadily improve and no more hip pain.
Hope you have a Good Weekend

Anyone do any Tai Chi? and how long after hip op. Still loving the gym and aim to continue with it twice per week for now but have been thinking about doing something different as well. Making progress at the gym plus cutting down on work has got me quite motivated on all health related stuff.

Good for you! You must be feeling great @Tomgirl
Regaining mobility and flexibility makes us feel like we can take on the world :yes!:
Hope your week is great!
