TKR The journey continues

With a sock putter on-er ;-). I got one with my hip surgery. It's pretty cool actually and works well

It was a matter of pride that I got my socks on all by myself. (no sock aid) It would have been hilarious to watch and took some effort to do but I wasn't giving up! :heehee:

I'm right there with you, Amy Jo. I am also hooked on that, "I can do it myself!"! Sometimes that a good thing, but also sometimes that's a bad thing. We have to use common sense. I was able to sit down and bend from my waist to reach my foot to put my sock on. The first couple of times hurt, but now it's fine.

Right now I have cabin fever. Here it is the holiday weekend and no where to go. I don't have the energy to give the house the good cleaning it needs. I did work on my dining room table top which was in deplorable shape - it still is. My late husband said it was from the Civil War. I can believe from the looks of it that it is old. I am now riding my exercise bike. It is semi-recumbent so I have no problem getting the full turn. I try to do it for five minutes twice a day with little resistance. I'd rather do that than heel slides. I don't want to call my friend because of the fear of wearing out his generosity.

Id say call him :eyebrows:. He is probably has no plans either. Maybe just go for a short ride and get some ice cream? You are doing so well, I cant see how you wouldn't have cabin fever by now. I know that fever all too well. My sweet husband will always go shop for me. But I really needed to hobble out of the house today and hit Publix. When he shops, he has to call me every 7 minutes to ask about something. When I shop I just know what I get. So I went, came home sweaty & tired, but got what I wanted.

Hope you find some CFR (cabin fever relief)

Diane, I did call and got his answering machine. Then he called me and came over and put in a light fixture for me that we bought the other night at Home Depot. We had a sandwich out and watched a silly movie. A perfect end to a good day. My poor dog is unhappy and under the bed because a neighbor two doors down is shooting off fireworks. I'll probably let her sleep with me tonight to make up for her distress.

Sounds wonderful. Sorry about poor doggie. Im lucky I guess, storms, fireworks etc, dont phase my dogs. Let her sleep with you and get some extra cuddles.

I'm glad you had a good day. My youngest daughter came out today and after I got home from work she cooked dinner, took me for some ice cream and then to see some fireworks. Even though she's staying over all three dogs want to pile on me!

Sounds like you've had a very good day! It'll do you and your dog good to let him snuggle with you tonight. Our pets are our support system, too.

Yesterday I went for a ride with my friend to a neighboring town and did some shopping. Then we returned to his place and went for a leisurely dip in his pool followed by a TV movie. I got to bed late and couldn't sleep. I don't care that I was awake. It was a great day. Today we are invited to his son's house. I am very happy that life is a little more normal now. I hope all of you in the USA have a wonderful holiday.

I love LOVE LOVE seeing how much you have improved in such a short time. I bet the dip in the pool felt great with how hot it has been. Were you able to navigate the steps into the pool ok? Have a wonderful 4th.

You are so blessed to be snapping back so quickly! It just goes to show that if you're in better shape going in, you'll probably have a fairly good comeback! Keep it up girl! You are one to imitate! How uplifting it is to read how well you're doing!

@dianehelen Yes, there was a rail with the steps and I went down and up very carefully. I am still a little paranoid of falling. My next challenge is to go up and down steps like a normal person. I give myself a week or two for that.

Thanks for the encouraging words, Paula. You are right behind me. You are right that my knee was not as bad as yours going into this. I had also been working with a personal trainer for a year getting in shape. I told him that he was my anti-nursing home insurance. I'd rather spend money now then pay for a nursing home. I had no idea that I'd be getting a TKR. The knee went down really fast.

AmyJo - it takes some people as long as 4 months to manage the stairs one foot at a time, so don't be in a rush to do it. Going upstairs usually comes first, because going downstairs puts a greater strain on your new knee. When going downstairs, you're almost doing a one-legged squat, as well as trying to balance on that one leg. That's hard for a relatively new knee.

Forcing yourself to do steps too soon up or down is the same as doing too much PT. if you try a step and it hurts stop! That goes with down too. I found in the beginning that on one day I could do stairs easily and the next day I couldn't. Just like everything else with this recovery you start off small and it slowly builds from there and can have starts and stops.

I mistakenly stepped down to our deck, which is about a 6" drop, this evening with the good leg first and the new knee bending. It hurt! But, I did it. I will be more careful next time. It's too soon for me to be doing that. I have stepped up with the new one on a 1/2 level step a couple of times and it felt fine. Going down is much harder! For years I have always gone down stairs backwards, lessening the strain on my knees. People looked at me like I was crazy. But, do you think I cared? I did at first, but got over it really quickly. Now, I will be able to go down stairs frontwards eventually! Progress is a comin'

@Floridagal sounds like you had an amazing weekend, good for you :loveshwr: it does feel good to do normal, fun things again!!!
