Bilateral TKR The Historian - recovery diary

Oh Historian, I think you had more then a head cold if you were throwing up by the time you got home. Unless it was from coughing too hard from mucus going down your throat. Anyway, hope you feel better. Now what to do during the winter months, you could do like we do, head south, we go to AZ for the winter, or 8 weeks at least. Other things to do is join a gym, or do a workout DVD. But you seem more the outdoor type of guy, so I would say invest in some good warm clothes and just get out there and do what you like to do most. But be careful of the slippery ice and snow.

Another day, another hike, another problem..... my illness migrated from my head to lower in the digestive tract. My hike was limited to 3/4 of a mile because I needed to be near a bathroom. Still, I was outdoors and active.

Other than taking photos, hiking, and being sick, I did some shopping to replace items in my wardrobe that don't fit right anymore because of my height gain and new stance. A new pair of shoes, a couple of pairs of pants, a few shirts..... I know guys aren't supposed to like shopping or dressing, but remember, its the peacock, not the peahen, who has the pretty feathers. It served as a needed pick me up for my down mood lately.

A small victory at work this week. One of my bosses called the department into a short meeting in her office. There weren't enough chairs so I stood in place for ten minutes. As the meeting ended and I walked back to my desk I thought "I've not been able to stand in place without pain for years." Yes I still have trouble with low chairs, my gait isn't back to normal yet, and I get swelling from time to time, but there HAS been progress.

I was awesome by accident today in Nolde Forest State Park. My 2.5 mile hike turned into 4 miles after I made a wrong turn - easy enough to do in Nolde, which has 600 some acres cris-crossed with trails marked and unmarked. I climbed a grade only to find I wasn't back to the car. I came to a fire cut that showed me a mile up from the main road. So I had to backtrack as the sun set. I made it back before dark but I was out of breath and sore. I'm very stiff tonight, and I dread tomorrow's rain, but still I'm glad I did it. My hiking limit before surgery was six miles, so I'm 2/3 of the way back to my former self. Now to get back there and surpass him....

Nolde Forest.... first one from the Nolde mansion (which houses the park office), second one from the forest.

And finally, from today's 1.5 mile hike at Binky Lee Preserve, a 112 acre farm site that's being allowed to return to forest....

As I mentioned, I hiked a mile and a half today at Binky Lee Preserve, a 112 acre farm being reclaimed by the forest. BLP has several miles of trails. I was hoping for a 'recovery hike', and instead I was huffing and puffing up grades. Despite scattered rain and the weariness of yesterday, I was fine on the hike.

Hi, perhaps we should start a thread of hikes in the social room and post our photo's. I did an awesome hike today but not as far as we'd have liked as we stopped to take so many photo's. I'm 10 months post TKR and hike for two hours at least once a week and shorter one hour ones three times a week. Any longer than two hours and I get stiff and sore while walking and it becomes unpleasant. I think its not the terrain but the duration that makes me sore. Its just wonderful to get out there and hike again. I hadn't been able to do two hours for at least a year before my TKR, and even then it was with my knee braced and with walking poles.

ps awesome photos.

Wow, so beautiful!! Glad you're feeling better too!

This is so inspiring hearing about the return to normalcy. I, too, love hiking and cannot wait to be in the outdoors again!

I really admire your persistence, going out even after an accidental extra-long hike! For the winter, such trails would likely get too dangerous with ice, etc. It wouldn't be nearly as nice, but a lot of malls here have walking origami before the stores open. Indoors it's dry and safe, and you can do the perimeter in nicer days. There are others around in case you have trouble like a slip or fall. Lacks the adventure, but at least is an alternative. One caveat: mall floors can be a lot more unforgiving than natural terrain, and the floor surface often varies between malls.

I generally found ways to remain active in winter without mallwalking. Nothing wrong with it but it doesn't suit me. I'd window shop too much. :)

Neil, you have no idea how pleased I am for you. Your recovery is nothing but awesome. Accidental or otherwise. Regardless, you are moving forward and that in itself is success.

Two miles this afternoon in another local park, Coventry Woods. The Chestnut Hill and Rock Run Trails are less groomed, more rugged than I'd like, but still easily hikeable. The drawback is a lack of photo-worthy scenery. Having lately seen the French Creek at Warwick, the Schuylkill River at Black Rock, the mansion, creek, and forest at Nolde, and the hillsides at Binky Lee I'm spoiled. I need to remember that sometimes the woods is just the woods, and its still good regardless.

No joint or other troubles to report.

Woohoo, all 32 pages start to finish. As always, an excellent read and as entertaining and informative I've come to expect over the years.

I certainly have a new found appreciation for the remarkable progress you made early on. I've also come to realize some milestones may be a bit further off than originally hoped for but still very possible.

That's awesome, Neil! I'm going to be down at Cumberland Falls in Kentucky later this week, and hope to do a couple baby hikes. I've never been a hiker, to speak of, so anything is a gain for me!
