THR Tarajeane has a new hip

How should I be elevating my leg? I was told not to put a pillow under my knee to elevate my leg
I sit in a recliner most of the day and was told not to put a pillow under my knee to elevate my leg
That's right, because if you do it like that then you are NOT elevating your leg. You need to use one of these three ways

has anyone gotten a tattoo over scar after THR? How far after surgery did you get a tattoo? Did it hurt more or less over scar? And did you have to take antibiotics prior?
Yes you can get a tattoo after about 4-6 months. It might be a little sensitive but shouldn't hurt. If it does, tell the tattooist to stop and leave it till later. And no, you won't need antibiotics. Assuming, that is, that your tattooist is a careful and professional artist who always uses proper sterile equipment and techniques. We had one member who had a dragon tattooed over her knee scar!
Do you think I may have dislocated the hip?
Honey, if you had dislocated your hip, you'd be laying rigid on the floor, screaming for an ambulance!
I’m so worried, my knee pain has gotten so much worst that I have not been able to walk all day
You tweaked your knee the other day and it's already sensitive and gnarly. It might even get worse before it gets better.

Are you taking your pain meds? If so what are you taking, how much (dose) and how often?

I think you've got that wrong. Hydrocodone has acetaminophen in, usually 5mg. The 325mg you have quoted there is Tylenol and I suggest you take an extra 2 regular Tylenol (325mg) with each dose.

Don't take ibuprofen because it's not a pain killer, it's an NSAID and has very poor pain killing properties. Also some rather unpleasant side effects
Medications: acetaminophen (Tylenol, paracetamol) and NSAIDs, differences and dangers
NSAIDs Diclofenac. ibuprofen increase risk of heart problems: new study

Cyclonenzaprine 10mg at night
This is also not a pain killer, it's a muscle relaxant. It has little or no effect on your pain.

It’s a combination drug 5/325
I guess that is the only pain killer I’ve been taking then? This is what they sent me home with. Are other people taking more?

@Tarajeane, that's exactly what I was taking too, along with the Tylenol. It depends on the OS; some prescribe different things.

I am also very swollen and foot is black and blue. I have been doing ankle pumps and feel it helps. My knee was also very swollen. But is getting better. My toes get numb from the swelling and I have to put a heating pad on then to get the sensation back. My surgery was June 5 as well.

I suggest you ice instead of any heat. Ice will reduce the swelling. Knee, foot and hip - wherever you have swelling and for at least 45-60 minutes per session.

I also feel like my leg turns in slightly when I’m resting and elevated. It did this before surgery where my foot turned completely in now it is just slightly more then my good leg. Would it be a good idea to keep a thin pillow between my knees to keep my leg from turnin in?

Are you all going to physical therapy , I was given exercises to do at home, I’m in Houston. Does the PT help?

I’m going through the same thing. My hip hurts but nothing like my calf, ankle and knee from the swelling. Anybody know why we swell?

Tarajeane, you had yours done the same day as me, is the swelling going down for you? My thighs has gone down but not my knee or foot....and it’s very painful!

My ankle and foot is still very swollen and black and blue. Still have some swelling in hip and knee but is going down. I haven’t been able to walk in two days due to sever knee pain that will travel to hip. It started Friday and PT.

Hi @Tarajeane
I can only speak from experience. I had what's referred to as external rotation. My foot turned outward slightly when I stood. My surgeon reassured me it would be corrected during surgery and I noticed afterward it wasn't. He said give it time, which I did and now it's normal! So my best advice....give it time.
I hope you had a better day today. Wishing you a wonderful Monday!
I apologize for derailing a bit below...

I too had a lot of swelling mainly in the hip and thigh area , it looked like I had an extra butt:rofsign: I iced and elevated and in time it subsided. Please just take it easy and don't over do it , I did and I'm still paying for it 11 weeks post op . The only bright spot is I stopped physical therapy and I'm finally getting better:yahoo: all thanks to the great advice I received on this forum , the people on here are wonderful:loveshwr: sending healing vibes your way

@Tarajeane I hope your knee pain is getting better. I am 10 days out also and my knee is just now starting to hurt. I haven’t had problems with swelling but I’ve had ice by my side 24/7. I hope you are well.

I am still having a lot of knee pain and can’t put any pressure on that knee. I called the dr and he said to wrap my knee and ice/heat. I have an appointment tomorrow. I haven’t been able to walk since Friday night

Good Afternoon,
Wishing you comfort, relief and hoping your doctor is able to determine the origin of your pain tomorrow and offer you some reassurance. Keep icing and resting until then. Please stay in touch and let us know how your appt goes.
Hugs :console2:
@Tarajeane

@Layla thank you! I wrapped my knee and it made a huge difference! I was able to walk around the house and do what I felt like most of the day. Just a little pain still when putting full pressure on knee but much better. Used one crutch most of the day but leaned towards my good side so I didn’t have to apply full pressure. Icing now and now and having jo pain. Hopefully my knee gets back to norma soon. Thank you so much for checking in:)

Glad to hear the wrapping helps. Has your swelling gone down? I had mine done on June 5th, same date as you, I believe. And I still have a lot of swelling I also live in Houston, had mine done at Fondren orthopedics on Main. I happy for you, that you seem to be doing better. Keep posting, because we have similar pains and swelling , it’s comforting to hear how your doing.

Swelling seems a lot better today but def still swollen. A lot of black and blue on my knee down. All my toes are also black and blue but it all seems a lot lighter today:) having an mri of the knee next Friday to rule out anything. Dr did X-ray and looks good. I am using one crutch and feel pretty stable. At night when tired I use two. Stopped using the walker two days ago completely:) just an update. Hope you are doing better and happy Friday:) I am in Florida
