I understand your pain, your fear, your frustration, your helplessness. These doctors have us at their mercy as do the ins companies. I am so sorry. But listen to all of us when we say that it does get better!! And it starts getting better much faster about week 10 I think. You will get through this!
Sending positive energy!

pamo, I am so sorry you are going through all that you are. I can relate to so much of it. Do your best with the pain meds. Maybe some of our veterans can give you some help and advice. I had to work out my own way of dealing with that.

As far as the job. I have the very same fears you do. On my feet 8 hours 2 breaks one 1/2 hr lunch BUT I will do all I can. I will go back to work when I must. I have learned here it may not work and if it does not it does not. I will cross that bridge when I come to it. It is what it is and all I can do is try. I am my own sole support so it will not be very nice if I have to. The point is there are worse things in life. At least I will have a good knee.
Best of luck to you. I hope it all works. Just take it one day at a time and do whatever you can and no more. Deal with the problems as they happen and don't stress over what might happen.

Keep posting and take all the advice that you can. We are all here to help.

I feel for u i truely do, i hope everything works out with your job, you will be in my prayers. And yes, it does seem like we r all friend on here, i too have read my postings which have made me cry, no person while reading them. I do not know why they give us such a hard time about the pain efs...i was not on them before the surgery, i am not addicted, but in pain....only giving me a week supply and then having to call and get more. I guess i should be appreciating the fact they have not cut me off yet. Well i hope the nurse is able to get you a higher dosage, im sure she will. Well keep your head up, ice on that knee, and keep it elevated.

pamo....I'm so sorry you are still having problems. Your profile says you are from Canada. It was my understanding that you could receive medical care through the government health insurance program and you don't need private insurance. Am I misunderstanding something?

Try asking your surgeon or his nurse if you could step down to a different drug like Tramadol (if you can take that). It is not as tightly controlled as some of the other pain medications and it works for a lot of people. Your first priority is always to get that pain under control.

Please don't hesitate to come here and post any time. We do understand what you're going through and we'll be here for you. Sometimes it helps just to have someone to talk with.

I too am having issues with pain management. There are some days that are really bad. The pain radiates from my thigh to my ankle with my knee throbbing. My OS also told me he is not going to prescribe any more pain meds and for me to see my GP.

I was taking Percocet 10 because the 5's were taking too long to begin working and weren't lasting 6 hours. My OP prescribed the Percocet 5's this last time and they just help for a couple hours. I'm nearly out and very nervous my GP isn't going to give me the Percocets. I'm hoping he will give me something other then Tylenol.

I was really surprised my OP referred me to my GP, because I thought I was still under his care and it would be him who would help me with controlling my pain. I guess they fear addiction.

It's very aggravating to have gone through with a knee replacement without having any clue how much pain I would be in for so long. I too cry many nights questioning my decision to have this surgery.

Bonesmart has been my only resource for good advise and support. So you are not going through this alone. Each day we get through is one day closer to a hopefully pain free knee. I don't even remember when I have had no pain.

Physical therapy is tough too for me. It causes a lot pain for me. I would rather give birth.

So hang in there and between those who are fully recovered, those just waking from surgery, and people like us WE WILL get through this.

Positive thoughts, lots of rest (even if it's a nap at a time), this time next year we will be better!!! Right? : /

Hi Pam ... so very, very sorry to hear about the difficulty you are having with getting appropriate pain meds. I am at a loss as to exactly what your OS and GP expect you to do. You can't function and get on with the business of recovering from your op if all your energy is taken up with trying to cope with pain. :gaah: I don't know much about the difference in strengths of medications and creams etc. in different countries, but giving you Voltaren cream??? Really??? I am sure it works well for people with mild arthritis, but recovering from TKR and dealing with fibromyalgia????? You might as well suck a boiled sweet as my father used to say.

Please keep visiting and posting and while there is not much physically we can do for you, at least you will know you are not alone and that in different countries, there are people who are worrying with you and who really care how things turn out for you. I know it is hard, but please try and worry about losing your job when/if it does happen. Over here, people cannot be terminated simply because of an infirmity, injury or illness.

Please take care Pam and I sincerely hope things turn around for you very soon.

Ellen ... :console2:

Once again I emphasize with your pain your fears. I am so sorry !

gazelle I keep thinking of what you said it snowballs after the 7th week Iam going on my 8th. I keep that in my mind everyday

One thing I have learned is not to dwell on what COULD happen. We all heal at different speeds and have a variety of experiences through this journey. There are many commonalities with recovery but that doesn't mean what I go through you will too.

Some take longer then others, that seems to be me : / and then there are those who seem to heal quicker. In the end we all get to have a pain free knee .. Yippee I can't wait to be one of those peeps.

I've also learned this is not a race and there is no 1 winner. We are all winners and together we will get through this. I feel that if you haven't had knee replacement surgery then you have absolutely no clue what so ever what we go through. I guess kinda like a man telling you giving childbirth isn't difficult.

So hang in there... Take one day at a time ... Don't give up because I know there are many smarties here that are willing to support us until we can stand alone and then we can help those who are going through what we have.

(Hugs)

I completely agree that unless you have been through TKR you don't understand what we go through. You may try but....
And we are all winners!!!

My doctor would not give me any pain meds or even call me back last week. So, Saturday I went to the hospital for help. Well, because my doctor wrote in my chart that I shouldn't be in the pain I was in, no more meds. The hospital said so. When I started to cry, THEY LOCKED ME UP FOR 72 HOURS!! They thought I was going to hurt myself, they said.

So I am home now in more pain. No ice in the hospital and only 2 pills a day is all they will give you. Just thought I would share this so people will think before they cry in the hospital for help :gaah:

Oh dear. I how many weeks post-op are you? I'm at four weeks and had to go three days without any pain medication. If they hadn't straightened out the medications today I would have gone to the ER.
I did get some relief from pacing around the house, icing and using a tens unit but I font know if any of that would help you.

Unbelievable, so your OS has ESP and knows what your pain levels are???
Hope you can get some help from your primary physician for adequate pain relief.
Wishing you an uneventful recovery going forward.

Pam, I merged your latest thread with your recovery thread so that we can keep your updates in a single place. It's much easier for us to go back and review all your posts that way when it's needed.

I'm shocked at what is happening to you. Do you have any means to get to another hospital or doctor that is in another city and unrelated to the people you've been seeing? I don't know much about the Canadian medical system, and am unsure if your medical information would follow you to another doctor or facility, but it might be worth a try.

Do you have pain management doctors and clinics available? If so, can you try that?

What a disgrace. Your doctor and hospital have lost their purpose of helping someone who is obviously in pain and needed help. I am sorry you had to deal with these heartless people and hope you can find some relief.

Please don't put up with pain in PT, it is counter-productive
...I would rather give birth.
You must tell your PT, I am given to understand that the procedure for this is rather different.

I am sending you a hug and praying for your healing.. i feel so bad that your going through this with such bad things happening .. keep your chin up and things will get better

Good grief--I wish I could reach out and help you.
Short of getting proper pain meds, have you tried heat on the leg muscles and ice on the knee? As you know with fibro our muscles can get really tight and that can add to the pain of the knee recovery. :console2:

I have fibromyalgia also. I love you idea of heat on the thigh muscles and ice on the knee. I have to say, my very first PT (home health) informed me fibro is all in my mind. It was hard to trust anybody else I've dealt with to ask if I could be doing anything else, because I worried they all might have the same mindset. So, while your advise wasn't strictly gorgeous me I am going to try it and see if it helps.
Thanks.

Omg...i am sry what they did to you....it really is upsetting to know that they will not manage your pain. A tnr is not a joke, its a painful recovery, and everyone has different pain thresholds. I feel so bad for you. Please stay strong, things will get better, they will. I heard a saying that i really liked, it cant rain forever, you maybe having a rainy session, but it will pass. Feel better n remember to ice n elevate. We are here for you :friends:
