TKR Stiffness<

Thank you, Ill get some gel packs

Was this the answer to my questions, Judy?
No I copied your entire text and wrote below each question.

Got evaluated today by Physical Therapist. I'm 10 weeks out now. She said I was at 117 ROM and the other measurement needed 5 degrees I think she said. But she released me and said to keep riding the recumbent bike for 20 mins 2xs a day, then down the road I can add a little resistance to it. I'm happy with the results.

Are you using the app on your phone? The links do work, but not when you're using the app.
It's much better to use your web browser on your phone and get it to take you to https://bonesmart.org/forum/
and then go to the appropriate forum.
If you do that, you will also be able to see some other things that the app can't do, such as people's signatures.

On that first page, you'll also see this area:

There are lots of helpful articles in there about doing things on BoneSmart.

Jolly good - got it!

1. pain levels 5
That's quite high for10 weeks out.
2. I'm taking 50mgs of Tramadol 3xs a day.
I also take 1000mgs of Tylenol 2xs a day because I cant take Ibuprofen due to acid reflux.
Good, I'm very pleased you're not taking ibuprofen because it can be quite dangerous, specially if you already have reflux issues.
I suggest you take the Tramadol 4 times a day (assuming you're not working) but also take 1,000mg Tylenol with each dose as Tramadol and Tylenol make perfect companions and provide excellent pain relief.
5. icing: Once a day off and on for about an hour
I'm still icing on and off for an hour in the evening
You need to ice more than that. 3-4 times a day at least.
6. elevating: Not too often as it's painful to do that
just started elevating my leg. I'd tried before to elevate but it was too painful until I read in Bone health how to multistack pillows to get the right angle to prop your leg up on. It doesn't hurt anymore. I wish I would have found that sooner.
I've often found that people are warned not to elevate because the PTs assume they will elevate with their knee bent. But they don't understand how terribly painful that is. Nor do they understand that it's okay to have a bit of a bend and more, that the leg isn't designed NOT to have a bit of a bend when we're elevating!

I'd also say that you need to ice and elevate more to get that swelling down because that's the primary cause of your stiffness. That and your pain which also requires better management.
7. I go to the store, cook, clean etc.
I do pretty much everything as far as choirs go and I haven't been on a walker or cane for over a month now.
I think that sounds like too much for 10 weeks out. You need to cut back a bit!
Heel slide 2x a day for about 3 xs each
Twice a day for 15 to 20 minutes on recumbent bike
Heel slides are and easy exercise to do badly and that is badly! Read this Heel slides and how to do them properly (hope this link works)
As for the recumbent bike, your PT "released me and said to keep riding the recumbent bike for 20 mins 2xs a day, then down the road I can add a little resistance to it" which is fine except I'd cut that to once a day and none at all at the weekends. And don't add resistance until at least 14 weeks out.
Have been done with pt for two weeks. She said I was at 117 ROM and the other measurement needed 5 degrees
Jolly good!
However, minor point but ROM (range of motion) applies to both flexion AND extension, not just flexion! Plus -5 is almost nothing and will improve over the next few weeks with just walking and ordinary daily activities. There's no need to fret about that.

July 2, 2018 - TKR done April 12, 2018 Apprx 11 weeks out

Hi, I've been icing my knee a couple times a day now and elevating it.

My pain level is about a 2-3.

I'm still taking Tramadol but only twice a day and now transitioning to about once a day at night.

I'm riding my recumbent bike twice a day for about 10-15 mins, doing heel sides and working on getting my leg straight.

Not limping much anymore but still have medium level swelling. Judy

Please post any questions you have, it's what we're here for

Knee Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now; they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
don't overwork.
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery. While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

@judym64, this is the second time I have had to merge two threads for you. Please keep everything you post about your recovery including questions and concerns here in this one thread.

As you can see, by having two separate threads, you now have 2 copies of the knee recovery guidelines. More than one thread also makes it difficult for staff and other members to get the full picture of your recovery.

Thanks for your cooperation, take care, and keep us posted. WE CARE!

Judy, did you actually read my answers in my last post? Because from these comments, it seems like you didn't. And it took me about 40 minutes to construct that post!

Trying to find my way around here but its confusing. Sorry, Ill read your comments. Thx Judy

First off, I only have enough Tramadol for two weeks if I take them twice a day. They are not going to give me anymore narcotics. Also, icing... Im doing twice a day and elevating. I just dont have that much ice and no where to put a bag if Id buy one. Im using a gel pack in bed at night. Thx Judy

Hi judym64. I find that a large bag of peas works great for icing . It kind of "molds" to my knee and you can keep refreezing the bag .Also you don't need much room for it in the freezer unlike those large bags of ice .

Sorry have no idea how to operate this website correctly. It is so confusing for me. Thank you for the bag of peas suggestion. Ill try that.

Thank you the link helps a lot. Also, Im now coming via the internet instead of that app. Thx gals!

My homemade ice packs have worked great! I mixed 1 part rubbing alcohol to 3 parts distilled water, then poured that mixture into a good quality plastic freezer bag. Once sealed, I then put it in a second bag in case of leakage. I made several and have only had one bag leak in 7 weeks.

At this stage I'm close to 5 months out. I still have pain in my knee every day, which aggravates me, and I'm careful how I place it in bed at night so not to feel pain. It's not bad pain and I'm taking two 800 mg ibuprofen a day but they don't take the pain away. I'm still icing it.

They won't give me any pain pills but my MH doc just ordered me some gabapentin, which I don't have yet. I'm hoping this will help. With the push to eliminate narcotics it is very hard now if not impossible to get pain relievers.

I'm seeing a chiropractor as my pelvic bone is higher on one side than the other. The side where I had the surgery is the same side that bone is higher up and I'm sure it is affecting that leg. I have the appearance of one leg shorter than the other. The chiropractor is adjusting that each time I go.

It's an ongoing thing as I've been going for 6 weeks now. I just wonder if that's why my knee hurts or if it just isn't healed or both.

I have a follow up with ortho at 6 months. The knee is warmer than the nonsurgical knee but not a lot. It is not red and the surgical site is pretty healed at this stage.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm taking two 800 mg ibuprofen a day but they don't take the pain away.
No they won't because ibuprofen (an NSAID) is not a pain killer, just an anti-inflammatory. Don't believe all the advertising you see! And though I understand you can't get narcotics now you really shouldn't need them because there is an in-between medication which is Tyelnol. That IS a pain killer and a pretty good one too! I suggest you give it a try but do take 1,000mg 4 times a day (6hrly) and you should find some relief.

Tylenol worked well for me and still does for most things!
