THR Starting my recovery journey

Having a better day today. I think it helps setting the family free for a few hours each day. I just sit and read or practice my ukulele and they get some breathing space. I managed to mash the potatoes for dinner last night and this morning I emptied the top shelf of the dishwasher. So, little baby steps. I'm surprised at how the pain is very much under control just with Celebrex. I guess the pain was so bad prior to the operation that I'd gotten used to it. This pain is diminishing day by day. I was eyeing up my cane thinking I might practice a little bit of walking with that, just back and forth, and again I am pleasantly surprised at how well I feel. In fairness, I won't be hiking in mountains any time soon but still, I'm delighted with myself. Yay, go my body!

Getting stronger every day. I'm only using the walker in the morning to get out of bed. I'm using the cane the rest of the time. I feel like I should feel worse being only at day 10. I know that sounds crazy but my pain is minimal, my walking has greatly improved and I feel strong. The other night we were watching a movie and I swear that for awhile I forgot I'd just had major surgery. How can it be, so early on in recovery? I'm delighted but skeptical. I am sleeping okay in my bed although I have to say, the desire to roll over onto my side is almost overwhelming. I'm resisting but it takes tremendous willpower. While I was doing my exercises yesterday, I was listening to music and managed to incorporate a few little dance moves. Practically undetectable to the untrained eye, but I knew I was grooving. Shake, shake, shake. Shake, shake, shake. Shake your booty, shake your booty. Yeah, baby.

Glad your recovery is going well @JojoOso ! Baby steps indeed. Still very early days.

It's so good when you know that this really is going to be your ticket back to life with no hip pain, right?:happydance:
So happy to hear you are doing well... Just don't overdo now.
Shake it, but don't break it..:heehee:

Hope you have a good weekend.

Hi cool cats! I am doing really well thanks to all the advice from Bonesmart. I do have a couple of questions if anyone would care to answer:
1. How long were you taking antibiotics for after surgery? I am supposed to go a full 3 weeks but I'm already itching like a monkey on fuzzy tree! Does that seem like a long time?
2. When can I go outside for a mini walk (10 minutes) ? My husband is insisting I stay inside until the stitches come out on Wednesday and just walk around the apartment. I live in a huge city, right in the centre but there's a big park right across the road.

Thanks in advance.

I never took antibiotics. Did your surgeon say why you need them? I would let your surgeon know you are having a reaction.

If you are feeling confident on your feet by all means get some fresh air. A park is a great place to walk. Just remember to go half as far as you think you can handle and build up your distance slowly.

Glad you are feeling better!

Well the idea is to prevent infection since you're very susceptible after surgery. I'm definitely going to tell him because I'm going nuts with the scratching.

Can you get over the counter antihistamines there? Many of our members solve this itching problem with something like Benadryl.

Yes, Claritin is available here but I'm taking so many meds right now that I'm reluctant to add yet another. I'm already rattling when I walk. Lol. I'll continue taking the antibiotics until Wednesday and I'll talk to my surgeon then. If the wound looks clean and dry then I would imagine I'm good to go. Surely 2 weeks is enough?

I went for a little walk yesterday and again today. It was a bit nerve wracking as there are so many people out and about because the weather is fabulous. Anyway, it felt good, but also a good eye-opener for me in that, at home, I think I'm superwoman but outside in reality, it's not so easy. A lesson learned - take it slow. Again, I must tell myself this. But, in terms of pain and stiffness, I felt fine today, hence the second outing. That went well and I felt more confident but I'm still a bit upset about my kids' attitude. I really feel like a burden to them - my older daughter just walked on ahead at her normal pace and was at least 20 metres away. Luckily the younger one stayed within a metre or two. I sometimes feel like it might be easier to do this alone. They create more mess than they clean. Sorry for ranting but this is the only place I can. I'm quite sure I was full of attitude as a teenager (my mother regularly reminds me :heehee:) but I know that I did my chores with no questions asked.

We all experienced this. Just take it slow and steady. Walk half as far as you think you can and if you don't feel any discomfort - try again the next day. Increase your distance slowly.

I think many family members are not comfortable with Mum needing help. Mum is the one who helps so what has changed. It take tons of patience to deal with this. Feel free to rant! My partner just ignored the whole experience and expected me to "return to normal" immediately (twice). It just doesn't work that way.

Just give your older daughter a verbal "picture" of what this surgery actually entails. Carpentry!

@Jaycey Thanks for your message. I'm usually a very stoic person regarding pain tolerance and I guess the kids think it's the same story.

Yeah, we tough ladies don't always get the empathy those fragile types do...especially from the kids.
You should let them see an animated version of your surgery so they Get It.
Regardless, stay steady and slow....
I feel like everyone thought I was going to do this hip replacement recovery thing as I do everything... Soldiering on with a positive attitude with not much encouragement needed. And I kind of did, but the post op blues do get upon you...and you have to let people know, even family, that this is hard.
The plus side, is you will get through this despite the lack of coddling.
Maternal guilt trip in reserve:heehee:

Big hugs... Keep the faith.
A snapshot in time friend.:friends:

Got my staples out on Wednesday so that's a new step forward. The wound looks great and is only 10cm long so that's even better. It's a perfect little zipper! But when I asked the surgeon if I could shower now, he said I need to wait 2 more weeks. Hot damn, doc, I'm stinky and I got hair on my legs that would put a yeti to shame. These sponge baths just aren't cutting it! Alas, I shall soldier on and be smelly belly Jojo. All for the greater good.

:mcoffee: Good morning (for me) my smelly belly hairy hippy friend.:) :-) (:
Glad you got your staples out and all is looking well.
Surgeon does seem very conservative on the shower situation, but you seem very happy with your medical care and won't that first shower be splendid!!!:dancy:
Hope the rest of your week is SWEET.

Congrats on staples out. Sorry you’re bummed about your personal hygiene. What about an electric razor and help from one of your darling daughters? May make you feel better.

Wish I could blink the time away until you’re standing under your shower. First one for me was heavenly, quick, but nonetheless fulfilling. I guess sponge bath and wipes will have to suffice until then. One good thing, you never lose your wonderful sense of humor, Jojo.
I hope you have a lovely Friday and weekend!
@JojoOso

Hi @JojoOso , had my staples out on Wednesday, nurse put waterproof dressings on both incisions so that I could have a shower. I would enquire if they can provide you with waterproof dressings worth a shout especially for 2 weeks. :bath:

I went ahead and took a "sort of" shower - just trickled the water on myself then turned off the water, soaped up, shaved the easy to reach bits (lol) and then trickle-rinsed. I actually managed to avoid getting my scar wet. I am becoming a master contortionist. :heehee:

It's what I would've done....shhhh...I won't tell.
Nice to feel refreshed.

Hope your Sunday is SWEET.
