THR Sometimes peachy, sometimes the pits

I heard a horrible story just today about a coworker's dad whose revision of his hip went terribly awry and the old man almost didn't make it through the surgery

Well. Im sure your co-worker meant well, but Im sure you really wanted to know about that !
I dont know whats worse to be honest - the stories about someone who suddenly and without warning coughed their hip implant up in the middle of tescos on a busy saturday afternoon, or the stories about someone who tap danced off the operating table, jogged out the hospital as soon as the spinal wore off and ran two marathons before tea. There is always someone ready to delight you with a super scare story or a super recovery one . :gaah:

Poppet go away!!!!!:rotfl: No videos for this girl......

Did I tell you I performed my own THR pre surgery one day.. Haha! Hubby came home on my day off, found me on my laptop.. I had found a 3D application it talked me through the whole op... I found out I am a pretty good closer, very neat stitches :rotfl:

Peaches, I read your post somewhere about stairs and "toddler steps".... I wanted to mention m recent insight. I wish I'd figured this out before I was done with my home PT person!
I have been doing steps "toddler style" since before my other hip was done - to favor the LEFT hip, my more recent one! I think I probably started doing that with my fall-on-ice bursitis, a year before my right hip replacement. I know that after my right hip was replaced, I had to train myself to do toddler-steps with the other foot, but even by the end of 2 weeks or so I was going back to favoring my LEFT leg.
I am trying to make myself do one or two steps each day "normally" (the bottom steps - lol!) but, goodness, whatever muscles are YEARS out of shape for me..... and maybe for others, too. Just an observation.....
zauberflöte ByGosh sandybeach LeeApril26 TeeEm and everyone, has anyone else had a similar experience?

Songlady. I can go up normally but not down. My left is the operated side and I can't even lead with it as I am supposed to on the way down, totally stressing my right knee. PT says it is caused by weak hip flexor muscles.

Peaches This is the youtube video of the hip replacement that I watched

OMG. I'd sue the &&!!##!
He made a bigger incision " just for the camera"!!
What a cowboy! The poor 70 year old man was a mere guinea pig so the OS could demonstrate. Straight to the Medical Board I say!!
Makes me furious!

:eeeuw: watching the surgery, no thank you!!!!!!!!!!
It's typical but I'm going up and down the stairs really easily just at the moment, flippin' hip should be hurting to remind me why I'm back in hospital next week!!!:gaah: :hairpulling: :hissy: :tantrum: Ok rant over and relax!!!:)

LeeApril26, Littlejem, Maeve ByGosh - I think I could handle the animated surgery video better at this point, and I'm not squeamish - broken link removed: https://www.edheads.org/activities/hip/
Lenora, thanks: hip flexor muscles. I'll google that to see what is suggested (not saying I'll actually Do much, :rotfl: )
And Littlejem, gosh, your comment reminds me: the morning of my first hip surgery (which was later in the day, like yours for next week) I was sprinting up and down the stairs doing chores, with NO pain, thinking, "WHY again am I doing this???" It was as if the energy/adrenaline in me, anticipating the surgery, relieved the pain at the time...Hang in there!:friends:

Stairs climbing-- well, the only stairs I was doing toddler style pre-op were the two killer ones from kitchen to garage. No railing, high rise & short tread. Scary any time. The only actual flights of stairs I did were at church, where I did lots-- ape style, swinging off my bad side arm to support the bad leg. Knees hurt or didn't, and going down was much the same as up. I have not been near flights of stairs yet post op; my front stoop has a double railing so I can attempt regular climbing every few days. From the last step up to the door sill is about a 3" rise, I can do that in stride with op leg just fine. All that to say in answer, Meg-- no!:rotfl:

Ladies! In between Poppet doing virtual operations and zauberflöte swinging from the handrail like an ape (in church!) to get up the stairs, any new bonesmartie will be wondering what we are on! If all else fails, we can blame the meds:whistle:
My hubbie keeps asking what I'm sniggering at, he already knows I am insane but thinks I've met some soul mates on here.:heehee: He still can't understand why I find steps easier than the steep slopes provided for the disabled in many places but steps can be used toddler style!
Anyway, having hijacked Peaches thread, here's a word for her - don't watch the video! I did but then I have a research scientist's mind and a very strong stomach.
Big hugs all round
Anne

Nannyannie oh the railings are the least of it-- the Music Minister and I have been swinging on the chandeliers of our church and one in Colonial Williamsburg, VA for a few years! You are welcome to join us...
I think those ramps are for wheelchairs....

Peaches Hi! We've hijacked your thread while you are working hard. Hope you are doing okay, and that work hasn't been too exhausting in the last few days. Hopefully you've been sleeping through the nights.
Nannyannie Having neither a scientist's mind nor a strong stomach I wouldn't touch that video with a ten foot pole. And, we are nuts. I laugh out loud from some of the posts, and my husband says, "What now?" BS is saving my sanity during my recovery from hip surgery, also known here as "house arrest" until the precautions were lifted.

Peaches you are allowed to throw us all out, draw the curtains, turn out the lights, and go to bed with your head under the pillow................ may you have a good sleep for many hours tonight :)

Come out, come out where ever you are hiding Peaches.. The girls are providing some entertaining posts for your reading ... Hope you are doing ok? - update, curious minds you know!

Peaches, don't let any of us try to fool you----we're just plain nosey :rotfl: ---but we really want to know what is going on with you 'cause we care.

Rest up this weekend Peaches, lots of elevating and icing.. Remember ice is good for pain, aches and even irritable muscles and soft tissue, not just for swelling :)

Hope you are ok?
