THR Sometimes peachy, sometimes the pits

LeeApril26 - I love that suggestion, to send the video! Actually, last hip, I did that. I sent that animated video (eggheads? something like that?) with a sweet note saying something like: Since we were talking about my surgery and you seemed interested, I thought you might like to see what I went through; it's so cool!" lol
TeeEm - "Hips R Us" store - lol!! I love it! If anyone could launch that, it would be Peaches!
Peaches - wow, I am so proud of you with Emery-on-a-stick! I may try that myself! I hope this week at work goes ok for you, and I look forward to your reports whenever you have a chance!

Songlady TeeEm. I was thinking of a really graphic video. Of the actual surgery for Peaches unsympathic colleagues. I love that you actually sent the animated video with such a nice note!
Or, Peaches could place one of the pillows with the hip image on her chair at work-one in full color.

Peaches TeeEm Songlady LeeApril26 Very clever ideas! Peaches, you have so much on the ball, I bet you're head and shoulders above those insensitive co-workers you have, in every way. (We stick up for each other here, that's for sure.) And the idea of sending the video is really good - that would turn them green - and not with envy, either!
"Hips R Us" ! Love that, too. You should work for an orthopedist who would go in with you and market your brilliant ideas.

Poppet: Hey, I loved your new, tie-dyed avatar!
Thanks for your input about Cane Versus No-Cane.
I will try not to rush it, but today at work I really
felt myself chafing at having to carry it.

TeeEm: Hips ‘R’ Us—I LOVE IT LOVE IT! How
clever! Actually, you know who would be the perfect
person for an “alternative hip kit” and all other THR
goodies? Martha! She had her hip replaced a couple of
years ago. I am very surprised she didn’t take one look
at that vile, stinky toilet riser—not to mention the other
implements in the “kits”—and decide during her time off
from work to design a whole line of “durable medical
goods.”

LeeApril26: You know, speaking of videos, do you have
one you recommend? I too am very squeamish, but am
dying to see it someday. I want to see for myself if the
surgeon(s) actually do lean hard on your knee while
dislocating your hip. When I have looked online for
the surgery, all I see are videos of the anterior method.
I want to see the so-called “gold standard” that I had—
the good ol’ postero-anterior method.

Hi, sandybeach: I hope you’re doing okay. My favorite
time on a beach is when it’s nippy enough to wear a sweatshirt,
and of course roast marshmallows on a stick. Which beach is
in your avatar?

@Hi, ByGosh … thank you for your kind words, none of which
I deserve. I am SO glad you are in a little less pain, and do understand
why you almost hate to say anything lest you tempt the God of Inconsistency.
Just today I was fairly pain free and I mean pain free. And hated to say so since
it can turn on a dime. You are so prepared for you OS visit, with all of your
paperwork. I know you will do better than I do; I write out a list and then
don’t ask half the things on it. I cannot wait to hear that you have been given
some solid advice from this OS as to the groin problem.

Peaches Oh, no. Not me. I have not watched a video, and don't intend to. Have you searched on you tube? I know several people have mentioned watching it in the posts, but am not sure if they are all anterior.

Peaches I hope your second week at work is much more easier for you to get around. That first week makes you use muscles that you haven't used before even with all the exercises from PT's. Did you start right away with 8 hour days? I am working slowly into it. I feel stronger this second week. I am making myself do more normal things and not baby myself. I get up at work a lot and I find that if I don't, I get stiff and it takes a few steps to loosen up. I don't know what beach is in the picture, I found it online but to me it looks like Hawaii.

Yes, Poppet (and thank you for the input!), it is office based. Walking hither and yon, but basically scrunched in a chair, hunched over the desk/computer. Today I stood in the handicapped stall and because I was so stinkin' antsy and bored and frustrated at work, I suddenly stared at the handicapped bar and decided to do some of the darn exercises! I was able to complete a set before anyone came in and heard. I also did it in the elevator when going out to lunch.

Today, dare I say it? It was almost pain free. And we had buckets of rain, too, though frankly the weather has never had any impact on my hip. Which is strange, I guess. Anyway, it was an almost pain free day and what pain I had, was hardly anything. I don't trust that every day will be like this, but it was a nice moment. It offset the fact that the stress and nitpicking of my supervisors has heightened. "The honeymoon is over...." Oh, well. Nothing is perfect. Before the surgery, I had pain, compromised mobility, AND the stress and nitpicking. So I'm better off now.

Hi, sandybeach ... so you too are in week two! So proud of you for making yourself do more, as I know I have a tendency to baby myself as I get scared of paying the price of overdoing it. But you are right: If I don't get up frequently, I do get very stiff. I am working full days, and did so last week. But I'm doing it "nine to five," meaning I am not working overtime hours like many do in nonprofit types of jobs, where everyone is understaffed and always on the brink of layoffs. I do find I'm doing more normal movements this week than last. I am NOT sore at all tonight, either. I have done two hallway walks and two small stairway-step practices--just like I did prior to returning to work. Last week I barely did anything when I got home, I was so tired. This a.m. I did notice the infamous fatigue drain come upon me. But I think part of it could be that I just don't sleep much at night. Lots of coffee helped, though. (I know, I know ... but I love my joe!) I wish you all the best with coping with work. Keep me posted if you have time. I do know that I could not have returned two weeks ago. I am much better now than then.

LeeApril26 and Songlady: Give LeeApril26 the credit for the emory board on a stick? Well, and Kylesh ... her husband. I would never have thought about the emory board. Or the stick. I am now a convert.

sandybeach, can you recommend a video that is poster-lateral? I have searched high and low on the Internet, including YouTube and that "surgery" site ... but cannot find anything except anterior ones.

Peaches I give up. I just skipped two wonderful pages to even get to you tonight! :) So if things I say sound strange, it's b/c I'm not really up on stuff. I don't know where I was when you posted your work week summary, but I read it and thought, there goes a hippie who KNEW WHAT SHE WAS DOING IN REHAB!!!!!!!! You may say that you are flying blind, but I think you just wrote a book for many who must return to work early. And I think you're still writing it :)
The cane-- if it was me, I'd keep it for months, just to be safe. Maybe you don't really need it or maybe you do, but if you have it near you, you can brandish it as needed!
I understand being reticent to say you're in a little less pain each day, but I am going to hop[e, with everybody on here, that this trend will continue forever. It doesn't seem to me that you will be an impulsive golf player-overdoer, or
a bowling casualty, I think you are going to continue running this marathon at a good pace, and beat many sprinters!
I hope the sleep comes. I can tell you from experience that enough of the weird pattern, and it will become normal to you (sigh) and you will get by. But if you had a good pattern, I'll bet it's just waiting in the wings till more healing happens, and then your sleep center in your brain can come out of hiding :)

  1. She wants to feel good so she can go home; she is very clear that she wants to be on her own, in her own place, ASAP, and not worry about taking various meds "for the future.".... she wants to live her days on her own terms... Big, big stuff.
Ohmy Meg! This sounds like my own mother! She has yet to be in a position such as yours is, but she has messed with her own meds for exactly the same reason. She doesn't see why she should take a heart med that makes her feel lousy just "for the future", especially when she knows that her own mother died at three years older than she is now. She feels better now than she has for several years! I really think that counts more than doctors are allowed to let on.

Peaches I will look for a video for you. I watched one that was specific to my surgery and a few others. I just was curious about what my body was going to have to go through so I felt more informed. We actually have a local newsman who underwent hip replacement and he had it filmed, I watched his surgery too. After my first week at work, I only worked 4 hours days last week but I noticed that bending over was so much easier. Today I realized I could get into my car normally again after all these months. Before surgery that was so painful. It's those baby steps that are rewarding.

Aaaw Peaches.. I just detest the fact that one slight movement at work and 'OUCH' .... and at almost 19 months no one cares anymore at work... I hear you !

Hang in there, come and vent here.. We are good listeners :)

p.s. pleased you like my new avatar... Nice and bright.. Take your cane and carry/use it with pride honey... don't worry what anyone thinks, this is your life, your recovery, it was your surgery, you do it your way...

Peaches sandybeach Both of you ladies are in your second week back to work and it sounds that you're both doing extremely well. It's great that you were able to go back 1/2 days, sandybeach. And also great that you've noticed an improvement this week over last week, Peaches. Less tired, more activity - all this points in the right direction of a good recovery.

It's too bad, Peaches, that your boss is nitpicking - you surely don't need the stress, but you were able to put it in it's proper place in your mind by remembering Songlady and her difficult experience with her Mom's outing. That shows you that you have some good coping mechanisms to help you deal with these types of annoyances. That's important because different things will always pop up for us, either at work or at home, that we'll all have to deal with. Having others who are coping with their own stresses somehow makes it easier, I think.

I think that's brave of you girls to watch the surgery video. I'm not quite ready for it. I think I still need some more time before I can see it.

Songlady Your Mom sounds strong in her wishes about how she wants to live her life. I can't blame her one bit. She knows what makes her most content and fulfilled at this stage. We'll be there someday, too, and I would feel the same way.

Peaches another "better even than the day before" day for you-- I am quietly elated for you. I still feel that what I said about you 'writing the book" is true. I don't think you are babying yourself one little bit-- you are listening to your body, and the only thing you will have to show for it is a recovered hip, some one of these months! Oh, and a W-2, lest we forget LOL.
Poppet I need to come to your thread soon, before I get 9,000 messages behind. Today I'm doing a thread, then an exercise, then a thread, then an exercise LOL.

Peaches and myself should be patting ourselves on the back for getting back into the swing of things. And yes Peaches I can relate to co-workers forgetting what you've been through and still going through. It seems like I haven't left. I work in a very public office so everyday people are seeing me for the first time since surgery and making comments about it so that kind of brings it back to my co-workers that I'm still on the mend for a few minutes anyway and then they are back to forgetting again.

zauberflöte... Didn't you want to watch this ?

You found me, thanks for dropping by - more later peeps ... Hugs from down under x

Hi, everyone:
zauberflöte: I don't know about that book! Today was a little creaky: groin-ish pains and shin splints after getting up from my long bus ride. Hope it's temporary. Trying not to get too freaked out. And the Energy Drain came with a vengeance--though how much of that is due to bad sleep patterns and, frankly, boredom at the job, I don't know!
I'll keep you posted, though! I walked a little extra today after work, as I am just so antsy about LIVING again and doing things! Am really chomping at the bit.

TeeEm. Yikes! I should be careful what I ask for! Not sure when I'll have the guts to watch the video, but I will definitely try. Thanks so much. I've wanted to see the poster-anterior surgery, to see what the heck they do. I guess we could make this a candidate for our Cyber Movie Thread, right????

sandybeach, how is work? Hope you haven't heard any glory stories of so and so sky diving the second week. I only heard them prior to the surgery. Nothing now. But people don't realize how hard it is to stand, reach into cabinets, haul file folders around, etc. And I am reluctant to inform anyone "I can't do that for a while," though i know I should. I'll play it by ear. I do feel relieved--and I hope you do too--that the first couple of weeks are behind me and I was able to do it. I was more concerned about this phase of the whole THR experience than the actual surgery!

ByGosh ... you're so right: I always find it helpful to be mindful of what others are going through. It helps me garner strength to cope with my stuff. I heard a horrible story just today about a coworker's dad whose revision of his hip went terribly awry and the old man almost didn't make it through the surgery. And his bilaterial THR of 15 years ago had gone very well, too. It was one of those "there but for the grace of ... go I" moments.
