Bilateral TKR Sleepless in St. Louis

I've been exploring the "clunk" tonight. I clunk when my knee is moving but not bearing weight. OS says clunk is normal and is because this knee doesn't have cartilage to help slip things over each other. Small amount of friction builds up between metal components and plastic and then they release with a clunk. He says it is something I'll get used to. So I guess snap, crackle and pop were evicted with the old knees but clunk came with the new ones

I Noticed some tightness at the back inner knee when doing ROM, I can trace the tendon cord on that side and feel a hard something next to it that is under a small muscle layer...is this the plastic part of the prosthesis or am I just nuts?

My knees still "click" occasionally when I'm walking---more softly now than in the beginning. And how you have any idea where different parts of the implant are is beyond me. My knee just feels like knee to me (to the touch)--no different than when I had my original equipment. I never knew exactly where the knee cap was before surgery and I can't tell now or find it to move around like some do. But I know I have two--I saw them on the x-ray.

I think we both need to get some sleep---

Judy, I wish I couldn't find my kneecap, but it seems to find me!:umm: Like I said earlier it has been a good week with it in the brace; and I forgot to mention crutches, but when they take everything away, I wonder if "capsie" will still behave. ChrisO, I experienced that clunking in my left knee at the first but it went away and then everything settled down. I hope the same happens for you!:)

Judy,

I know I should try but sleep us still elusive, so weird as I loved sleep. Could pop off the minute my head hit the pillow. Not now. I do a lot of ROM at night. Im trying to do criss cross apple sauce... Just can't get enough bend and twist. I envy young people's knees, C

Chris, you ARE young for heaven sakes! 52 is young!

Chris.....you might want to hold off on the "criss cross applesauce" for a bit.

This position can put quite a bit of stress on your tender soft tissues. Please try to be patient. You are still very early in the recovery process. Most people don't begin to feel normal again until at least the 6-month mark.

If you're having pain when walking, maybe you need to use your cane for a while longer. Be sure you're not limping as that isn't good for your knee or the rest of your body!

Good grief! I Never knew what Crisscross Apple Sauce was! Thanks for the picture Jamie! Ok Chris, if I tried that position, and achieved it, I would be stuck permanently! No wonder you knee is talking to you! If I were your knee I would probably do more than talk! :headbang:

Chris said, "I envy young people's knees, C"
Sonja said, "Chris, you ARE young for heaven sakes! 52 is young"

Judy says, "Chris, I was thinking exactly what Sonja said when I read your statement." But age is relative. I remember when I thought people in their 40s were OLD, then I got to be 40 and people in their 20s seemed like children and 40 was pretty young and 70 was OLD. Now I'm almost 70 and OMG 70 IS OLD! But, I'm only 35 in my mind---so I guess I'm still young in some ways.

I have hold your breath for a moment pain every time I put weight on my knees and a nagging dull ache or burn when at rest. The pain when walking is in the middle and wasn't helped by my cane. It is better if I use a walker or grocery cart because Im putting less weight on them. I figure I'll just have to live with the pain till it goes away or till 100 lbs goes away. I'm down 36 lbs so maybe there is hope for both weight loss and recovery to a point without pain.

Hey I said I was trying criss cross apple sauce not that I had achieved it! It's a goal. I watched a group of kids play on the playground today...they have such beautiful knees. So do their moms and dads. I'm with you Judy, in my mind I'm about 30 ...old enough but not too old, my knees make me feel old and slow. Reality is a bummer.

We went to an art fair today, I managed three of five tents before the knees became too stubborn. I walked on uneven grass and gravel and didn't stumble once. It was a little harder than usual getting up out of a low slung adorondak chair but no one had to call the fire dept.

Going to bed now, need to be up at 5.

Chris

Wow, I never heard "chris cross applesauce" we used to sit "indian style". Is this something that I can expect to do again? Awww, you all are going to tell me "no" just so I don't go trying it. Too late, I just tried it...:heehee: It hurts, maybe I will work on that. When we had taekwondo belt testing we had to sit on the floor cross legged. I only retired from that about 6 or 7 years ago... it seems like a lifetime ago with my knee problems.

I'd kind of given up ever sitting cross legged like that so if I am able to again that will be goodness.

As far as clunks or clicks or any noises, haven't had any. Knock on wood and cross fingers, I won't.

BJ, no sense in telling you not to do something! It seems like that just spurs you on to do it! :heehee:

I sure hope i can sit Indian style again, its was a very comfortable position for me. I used to be able to sit like that with each foot being able to rest on the opposite knee without using my hands. No one could ever do this, and they thought is was amazing, i am like a bendy toy, i have hypermoblie joints, which caused many dislocations for me. I will no be trying that trick again anymore, it cant be good on your knees.

My husband used to call me Gumby, I was sooooo flexible, which was a great thing in Taekwondo.

Sonja, maybe you are right about the challenge just spurring me on...
