THR Sissie's recovery

Wow! You are doing great at the 8 week mark. I think I would have peed a little picking up a baby alligator. The only wild things I have used my grabber on are my dogs' tails. Bandit keeps trying to play with my crutches whenever they are laying around. He sees them moving, so when they are still, he tries to drag them around.

I hope I wasn't sensing a little discouragement in your post....you are doing fabulous.

Tammy

darn! Thanks, Tammy. No, not really discouraged, just eager to be totally back to normal. Yesterday I only took one ibuprofen 200mg, and that was almost 24 hours ago. I was really stiff and sore this morning, but much better after walking around a bit.

I just read GrahamDee 's thread this morning---now there is someone who had a very difficult time but ended up doing extremely well.

Percy (15lb tabby, 5 years old) and I have an appointment across the street at the vet this morning for his annual check. He doesn't mind too much, as long as they admire him greatly and don't take a rectal temp:kittykiss:

I can appreciate the feeling of wanting things to be back to normal, but God woman, you are the warrior here. All the kayaking, canoeing and hiking you are doing at the 8 week mark makes others look lazy! You are my she-ro!

My fur-babies aren't much for the temperature taking either. My boxer sits down immediately and refuses to stand up when we go to the vet. It's funny how they know where we are...but whenever we are in the truck going for a ride, they absolutely love it. Then, when I turn down the road the vet is on they all start whining. It amazes me.

I will have to read GrahamDees thread to see what you are talking about.

More from me later!

Tammy

darn! and bellaroma Thanks, y'all. I've been getting a little anxious and discouraged---tending to catastrophize at every odd ache or pain, imagining that I've injured my favorite new body part. AND then I feel guilty because my journey has been very easy compared to others---I mean, bellaroma got a fractured femur and a wedgie:rotfl:, and look at all darn! has been through. I'm ashamed for whining.

I decided against paddling today, opting for a hike this afternoon instead. A friend and I are doing my most ambitious post-op paddle to date tomorrow morning, and I know alternating activities from day to day is best. We'll be paddling 12 miles on the Econlockhatchee River. It is downstream, we'll be leaving a car at the take out, but the water level is low and I'm hoping no haulovers or portages.

Percy-Beau did well at the vet, except he hates big birds and there was one in the next exam room squawking, very unhappy about whatever they were doing to him. I had to take Percy outside until the bird left and then he enjoyed the admiration of his vet and her tech. He's a really cool cat. No rectal temp, just one shot, and he weighs 15.1 lbs. Not fat, tall and lanky, big boy.

Bonesmart buddies, thanks for being here and listening to my whiny self:thankyou:

sissy46, I think it is somewhat human nature that once we start healing well, we start getting impatient for the next improvements to begin. You are doing great! And don't feel like you are whining. I find it really valuable to see the whole range of what everyone is experiencing.

I have been on the Econ river, both hiking near it and canoeing on it with the Oviedo relatives. Nice area! One of our hobbies is geocaching so we get out and explore quite often when we visit. One of the Oviedo relatives is a wildlife biologist, so it is always very enlightening to go out exploring with him. When you are biking, are you going on the big bike trail ( Seminole trail, I think?). I always tease my FL relatives about how flat their state is, but right now, that would be pretty nice. I can't complain much though because there is a beach trail only 3 miles from my house.

Happy Thanksgiving!

nerdgrrl Thanks for the encouragement. You are absolutely right, and I guess recovery never is a straight line.

My best paddling buddy lives in Oviedo, not far from here (Casselberry.) Oh my gosh, you've paddled the Econ! It is a beautiful river, and the depth fluctuates wildly with rainfall. There are bike and hiking trails in the Big Little Econ State Forest that come very close to the river. I don't bike those challenging trails (I have a bad back, too) but I look forward to doing some hiking in there. There is a paved bike trial that goes from Oviedo to Winter Park, and then we have the West Orange Trail, the Cross Seminole Trail. All of which I love.

We just decided to paddle the Wekiva tomorrow instead of the Econ, mainly because of the easier launch area, and no shuttle, just out and back. I felt like the 12 miles might be a bit much. I slept very little last night, and I'm tired. I hope I do better tonight.

But I had a glorious afternoon hiking at Wekiwa Springs State Park. Lots of deer, and a Sherman's Fox squirrel. It was extremely windy, but sunny and just warm enough. I walked farther than I have since surgery---much more than I thought I was going to do. I've been going out and back on the same trail each week, so I can gage my progress. I felt like I could have gone even farther; probably the endorphins, I was so happy to be out. I used one trekking pole and I think that really helps, even though I'm not leaning on it. Almost 3 hours. Some little hills. Kinda stiff now, but I'd rather have a glass of wine than an ibuprofen :thumb:

Next time you visit relatives, we'll have to go paddling :)

Hi everyone reading this thread :)

If you are posting to the member whose thread this is, it is not necessary to tag them. The tagging function is mainly used if you want to draw another member into the discussion :)

Oh Sissy, you silly girl. You aren't whining...you are sharing. There is a big difference. I think you are doing fabulous. Your activity levels are nothing short of amazing. Keep up the good work. You should be proud of yourself. If I am reading your thread correctly, you are getting out there and doing something at least 5 days a week and started doing so only a month out. WAY TO GO!!!!

You mentioned seeing squirrels out on your hike today. Have you ever noticed how skinny our squirrels are here when compared to those in other states? I find it odd. You would think the Florida squirrels would be fat little suckers.

Hope your Thanksgiving was a great one.

Tammy

Thanks, Tammy. I had a much better night's sleep---6 straight hours! I always seem to sleep much better when I've exercised outdoors.
I will try to post a picture of the Sherman's Fox Squirrel I saw yesterday. He or she was definitely not thin, although our gray squirrels tend to be slender, I guess because food is plentiful year round and they don't have to pack on the fat for hibernation.
There, see post below. The Sherman's Fox Squirrels are rather rare, but quite a few live in Wekiwa Springs State Park.

I don't believe I have ever seen one of those. It is pretty cute. Can't believe that that is a squirrel. It's head looks like one, but the rest of him doesn't. Go figure. It looks like in addition to your physical prowess as a hiker, kayaker, and canoer, you should also list photography as one of your skills. That is a beautiful shot!

Yay for sleep! 6 straight hours sounds so decadent now. Enjoy it. I too have always found it easier to achieve a good night's rest when I have been physically active during the day. I have been feeling a bit like a garden slug...you know, I'm up, I'm moving, but in no hurry to get anywhere. Or in my case, no ability to get anywhere fast, I'm just slinking along. But slow and steady wins the race.

Happy Black Friday....my other favorite holiday!

Tammy

Sissy, you are not whining, we all regardless of our stories or recoveries want to get back to normal, not be in pain and just be and do what we want. There is always someone in worse shape, but that does not mean we are not in pain or limited and want to move on. Glad I could make you laugh

Great pic. So much cuter than the fuzzy rats we have here! Love to hear it when we try to push to our next limit. It's good to know and good to get to the next level. Wouldn't know unless you try. I think we're all more in-tune with our bodies having gone through this procedure than those who have not. Hubby often says that unless someone has actually had issues (back, hip, or whatever) it is hard for others to understand exactly what you are really dealing with. Raises people's empathy a little.

I'm hoping to sleep well again tonight, after a great day on the Wekiva River. An easy, leisurely paddle, 4 miles downstream and 4 miles back up against a gentle current. Very peaceful, gorgeous day, low 70s and not a cloud in the sky. We stopped twice to get out and stretch. I took ibuprofen 400 mg early this morning, but I don't think I will need a thing tonight so I'm having a glass of wine:cheers2:

Wonderful days today and yesterday, but Wednesday after I took Percy to the vet I was so miserable I cancelled plans with a friend to go to a classical music lovers meetup group, and later tried to take a walk and barely made it around the block. Go figure. Two steps forward, one step back, makes me wonder what tomorrow will bring:bicycle2:

But as I told my paddling buddy today, I have reached a level in recovery where, if it never got any better than it is today, it was well worth having the THR.

I hope everyone survived Black Friday:)

Just out of curiosity - what is Black Friday?
