TKR Sharp pain 9 months post-op

My RTKR was Oct. 29th, infection washout surgery was November27th, I went back part time January 29th and full time 6 weeks later, so probably the second week in March. I did nothing on the weekends except grocery shop for the week until May.

i have been doing well with post op however started experiencing a sharp pain from knee to outside of ankle only when I stand. Once I can take a few steps it goes away but first few steps are painful. Stopped in and talked to PT she said my calf was swollen and it is severe tendinitis! She said it was from a pulling motion which is from when I started increasing my bike miles because I use clips on pedals and we have a lot of hills.
Has anyone experience? I have stopped riding for a few weeks and ice but even walking causes swelling if I over do. All checked out well at 6 month with OS this happened after

Thank you now if I can figure out how to do that!

It sounds as if you overdid it with increasing the cycling. Remember that it takes a full year for complete recovery, so your knee isn't ready yet to do everything you were doing before.

Tendinitis can take a while to settle down, so you'll need to call on your stores of patience. You're doing the right thin, in stopping the cycling and spending time resting, icing and elevating.

When I had tendinitis after a sprained ankle, my PT suggested alternating hot and cold packs on the affected area. It did seem to help a bit, although time was the principle healer.

@violinone I merged your threads as per this request One thread for your recovery please?

It is so much easier to be able to help you and give you the advice you need when we are able to easily see when your surgery was, what other issues you may have had, and what has been going on in your recovery just by looking at one thread instead of bouncing back and forth between two or more other threads.
Thank you now if I can figure out how to do that!
We have help articles here, you know! In here How To Use This Forum (it's in the "Help & Info" tab across the top of the page).

I cycle a great deal---when I have time! One thing that you have to remember is that you need to slowly---ever-so-slowly---increase your mileage. You need to rest and to take it easy and let the inflammation of the tendon calm down.

And, as Cell has stated, tendonitis can be quite a booger and will take its good old time in going away.

I apologize about the different threads I am having a time figuring out how to keep the same recovery post!

has anyone had issues with sharp pain when standing but once You start walking it goes away? Much like the start up pain you get at the beginning of recovery but it's not the sharp pain that is more like the stiffness pain? I am back at PT and she said it is coming from my low back for I am considerably weaker and tight on that side. My back is trying to realign from both knee surgeries I guess? I never had this with other knee why? I have been so frustrated with this knee! I have backed off considerably 4 months ago fearing of over doing. Knee itself doesn't bother me in fact have great bend and very little swelling. Once I start stretching the pain gets better when standing. But at times I literally wait once I stand to take a step for I know it will be very painful.
Reminds you of shin splint pain but you feel it all around the knee some in shin. Doesn't come straight from back down leg though occasionally I feel it in my buttocks on that side. I guess because my knee is healing is why I feel it there? I am just wondering why I didnt feel it early on in recovery?
Meantime I am doing stretching LOTS to that side focusing on low back hip and leg and just started adding strengthening exercises to that side. I think it is getting better but still have pain most daysBut early into therapy. Appreciate your sharing if you had this experience. Thank you!

@violinone .... I have merged your latest thread with your original recovery thread. Please use this thread for your recovery questions or updates. We need the history of your entire recovery in order to more accurately provide guidance for you when you have a concern and that can only be done if you have a single recovery thread. Celle provided some links for you to help you go back to this thread when you need it. You can do a search or just bookmark it. If you need additional assistance, just ask and we'll help you. Feel free to use a PM if necessary.

Thank you I have a terrible time with this! Sorry!

@violinone , not sure if the same but my RTKR is a month older than your LTKR and I still get start-up pain if I've been sitting for any length of time. I don't really even think about it any more- after rising I simply pause a mo', then carry on. At work I try not to grimace or wince. Anyway, pain is such a subjective thing. My other knee behaved similarly if not worse its entire first year and it's good now, therefore I resolve not to dwell on my new knee's shenanigans.

Pain in your glute or shooting down the back of your leg implies sciatica.

Some of your pain can be from sciatica. Sciatica does not need to run all the way down your leg but there are areas that can be affected because of back problems. I was having some of the same problems. I have been going to a chiropractor who does some deep massage of my back and adjustments. It has helped. I also made sure that I got new sneakers for work and to walk around in. I went to a store that caters to runners where they measured my feet, looked at my gait and whether I was turning my foot out or in and also the wear patterns on my old sneakers. The combination of both has now substantially decreased my pain.

Thank you if it wasn't for the sharp pain I wouldn't be concerned. More often than not it is only felt in knee when standing. Also it is when my SI joint is bothering me when I feel it in lower back but never down leg. I didn't have this with my rtkr or least I do not remember. Be so glad to get this first year behind me. My right knee is awesome and 3 years old just want the same for this.
