TKR Seven years out, Right TKR

Hey there, Julie. We are knee twins almost. I, too will swell and ache when I do too much. But, that wonderful ice does it's trick! I am so much better than I was a couple of months ago and, like you, am looking forward to it to be completely healed. Where exactly is your foot hurting?

Some new shoes and paying attention to how you are walking should help your opposite foot problems. I found if I tried to walk quickly with large steps I tended to have a much better gait and all the other aches and pains in my back down to my feet seemed to slowly go away.
.

Hi @sistersinhim ! Along the side of my foot (baby toe side) about half way down. It feels like I'm walking on glass at times??? Not sure if it's how I'm walking or what?

That's a different place to have aches. I thought maybe it was your arches, but it doesn't sound like it. Have you ever worn rocker bottom shoes? I had bad problems with both feet about 10 years ago and went to a foot doctor. He wrapped my feet into the correct position that I kept on for 2 weeks. He also suggested stable rocker shoes. I asked my then knee OS about them and he was OK with me trying them. Well, they work great for me. I even wear them to church! Wearing regular soled shoes now hurt my knees and feet. The stable rockers are expensive, but if they work for you, they are well worth it. If you were closer I'd let you try a pair of mine!

If you can wear sneakers right now I would suggest you give it a store that caters to runners.
There they took some timd to help fit me. They examined my gait, watched how my foot hits the ground, measured my feet, looked at the wear on my old sneakers and then brought out some sneakers to try. They made sure I was walking correctly. They even let you bring them back within 30 days to exchange them! This helped me a lot since my leg wasn't straight before my surgery but it was afterwards. Yes it costs a bit more but I can always re-order them on line when I need new ones.

There are all kinds of brands out there. But, I found that the Ryn brand works best for me. They don't rock from side to side, just front to back. I suggest you try a pair from ebay that aren't full priced to see if they'll work for you. That's what I did. You can go to the Ryn site and see what size they recommend for you. These shoes are all I wear except for slippers.

Merry Christmas everyone! :tree lights: Hope you all had a nice day with those you love.
I saw the foot dr on Wednesday because of the pain I've been having. He said I've torn a tendon along the outer side of my foot (opposite of my TKR) He gave me an injection & put me in a special shoe~tried a rocker boot but my TKR knee couldn't handle that. He thinks it's from walking/over compensating for my knee when I'm tired. It's been so painful~worse than my knee~I've been a walking mess. The injection gave me instant relief &'was able to see how well I really am walking with my new knee. I'm hoping my foot heals up quickly so I can get back to normal & continue with the second half of my year long TKR recovery.

Is the injection still helping? What kind of special shoe do you have since the boot hurt your new knee? I can relate. I had to wear a boot before my tkr and it did hurt the opposite knee. It's seems to always be something. I guess with a year long recovery other things are bound to happen. But, why can't they wait until everything else is healed?! How was your Christmas? Did your foot and knee let you enjoy it? I found my knee will still act up if I do too much. I get so impatient for a normal life. But, I won't complain. There are so many worse off than I am. God has blessed me so much and I've had only a few set backs! I truly believe God led me to my OS! When or if I have the left one replaced, I'll go back to Dr. Hull! He has given me a wonderful Christmas gift with my new knee! I just have to treat it gently for a few more months.

Yes! I was able to enjoy Christmas Eve & Day as the shot really helped. It's a flat shoe that Velcros on~he also wrapped & taped my foot up and the shoe keeps my foot stable. I'll see him again this Wednesday & see what else if anything needs to be done. So many different things we each go thru on this healing journey~so thankful we get you go thru it together! I appreciate all the support BS provides & for dear friends like you!

I'm glad that you were able to enjoy Christmas. In another week it will be 2017 and a better year ahead for all out new knees!

Wonderful that the shot helped and you had a good Christmas. Was it cortisone? Sometimes they can last for months. I hope this one does for you. That'll give your knee that much more time to heal. Is this helping your knee to feel better, too? Having the support of BS friends has helped me tremendously! No one else knows what a tkr feels like but one who has had one! And it's not just the physical pain. It's also emotional and mental. What a blessing having friends that empathize has been!

@sistersinhim I'm not sure the exact medicine he injected; he said he mixed 2 things~a long acting numbing med & not sure of the other. Now 2wks later, the swelling has gone down some, but still wearing the "shoe" but without the ace wrap on my foot. I'm still walking awkwardly because I still have some foot pain & my knee feels "loose" and it's been sore especially while sleeping??? I did see my OS on Wednesday for my 6 1/2m check up. He wasn't happy to see my foot injury. He took X-rays & the knee is in place & fine (which was a relief). He thinks I need more PT to help strengthen my knee. I had a cold last week, so he had blood drawn to rule out infection in the knee. He also said I should find a new type of job since being a medical assistant in a busy office & on my feet 10-11 hrs a day is proving too much for my healing process. There's not that type of opening in my office, but I did find out that down the hall at one of our other offices, there's a receptionist & a triage position available. I'm seriously thinking about making the change even though I work for an amazing NP! But I'm 55 & not getting any younger, so I need to take my long term health into consideration for my last 5yrs of working. I'm so overwhelmed!!! I thot this surgery would have been a positive thing, not full of all theses problems & set backs...depressed

Sounds like overall you like your job tho??? If that is the case is there a way to cut back the work hrs of the day, or to work 2 days one week and 3 the next or something of that sort. Can see where this could be depressing. These ups and downs that come with this recovery can be depressing. I hope you can work with your office staff to at least cut your work hrs down, or work p/t for a bit. Or if you feel you need a change that you will find something you enjoy as much as what your currently doing.

I'm inclined to agree with your surgeon. Being on your feet for 10-11 hours a day is a lot to ask of a new knee and it's taking its toll on your other foot as well. It really does take a full year for complete recovery.

If you can find a less exacting job, it would be a good idea.

It seems if you can stay with your present group that would be a plus in a lot of ways.

Hi Julie. Your OS sounds a little unreasonable telling you that you need to find another job, like it's easy as pie. I agree with everyone else. Maybe you could work fewer hours or every other day so you could rest in between. It would be a shame to have to leave a job that you like. Try talking to your boss. You might find him/her to be very reasonable, especially considering your foot problem added to your knee recovery. Thank God your implant is not loose! It just takes time to get our strength back. You will be a much stronger person when you get through these trials. And remember that you have a lot of people praying for you!

Down here in Virginia, we just had a snow storm that dropped 10" here. This area is pretty much at a standstill. We didn't even have church. I've been shoveling and sweeping snow. Can't imagine what my knees will say to me tonight and tomorrow!

That's a lot of snow!!! Be careful with all the clearing you're doing & take it easy with your knee!
Unfortunately, at my office there are no extras to be able to cover or rotate or be able to cut my hours. They don't want to pay for an extra "float" employe as we each have our own doctor to work for. It would be helpful, but not happening. I am encouraged though that there are a couple of desk type jobs open down the hall which means I keep my seniority, vaca hours, etc. if I decide to go that way. Just seriously thinking thru everything & what would be best... Thank you all for your support!
