TKR Seven years out, Right TKR

I'm happy about your great report, you are doing really well, I'm very jealous of your time off, lol

Thanks Clara~~lol...luckily I have Aflac or I'd be back by now too. Hope all's going great with you & your new knee. :)

Congratulations on a good dr session. The water sounds like fun, I can see how it would be easy to overdo.

OMGosh...got the okay to drive this week and decided to go get a few groceries at Meijer (like a Walmart)~~this was my first trip alone. It took forever and I'm soooo sore all over & my knee is screaming & swollen. :bawl: My walking is not back to normal yet...ugh...I hate this!!! Any tips on regaining my walking ability ??? :beg:

Take it slow and easy and with lots of breaks! Your first outing alone was way to much. Now, you'll need to do the Bonesmart mantra to let your knee recover.

I was just concentrating on building my stamina & learning to walk normal in this last month I have before going back to work, but you're so right~~take it easy & follow the BS mantra! Thanks!

Getting discouraged...at PT yesterday she had to measure me for my 20th visit eval and it was only 98. A couple of weeks ago she measures me at 105~~not sure what's happening. I'm still real stiff in my knee and walking. Seems the only time I'm more flexible is after being in the Hydrotrack where the water is like 98 degrees and I walk, do squats and bends in it. I can do the recumbent bike just fine, but am unable to make it around the regular bike...am I normal for 10 weeks ??? What else should I be doing? I have 3 weeks until I go back to work and I'm starting to panic about that. I'd appreciate any advice or tips!

At thirteen weeks it is just getting easier for me to go downhill when walking. For a long time I was uncomfortable walking outside - even at 10 weeks. Be patient with yourself. It will come around in its time not when you want it. Could you be doing too much in the pool? Remember that swelling lessens ROM.

And you won't feel it in the pool. It sounds like you're more swollen in the inside of your knee and that's why your ROM is down. Don't worry about it. It'll come when that swelling is down.

Say a prayer please... My boss is calling me @ 4pm to see why I can't be back to work before 9/21, the day my OS said it'd be okay to return. There's also a problem with me gradually going back ( part time for 2-3 weeks) UGH! I work in a busy Internal Med office where I'm on my feet 10-12 hrs a day with hardly any time to sit, let alone ice & elevate. I'm having so much stiffness & swelling that my OS said he could extend my return to work later if needed. I know I could not be able to make it working right now. This has NOT been a vacation for me. Ugh. I'm so frustrated. Thanks everyone! I'll let you know what happens...

Hi @julesm86
I'm sorry you are experiencing some ups and downs in your recovery, but it's very normal to feel you are making progress and then seem to go backwards a bit. It's the story of my recovery! You need to talk to your OS about your return to work and not be pressured to return until you will be able to cope, especially as you will be on your feet a lot. If your boss wonders why, ask him to watch a video of a TKR on YouTube! This is quite a long recovery and you can't rush it, healing takes time. Be gentle with yourself.

I truly understand your worry about work. I'm on my feet up to twelve hours a day. I too couldn't go back part time. I was able to find a way to sit for even a few minutes while preparing medications for my patients. Perhaps you can find a moment here or there when you could make even that small change. I can't ice at work and I realize that once I get home I will have to ice and especially in the beginning I iced all night. I still do many of the nights. I try to pick up something for dinner on my way home or have something that I can toss into my microwave for a quick meal. Since I live alone I leave everything else that needs to get done on my day off.

Update...sorry for the long delay...she got caught up in a meeting and will call me tomorrow...so the waiting continues. I'm not sure if I should contact my OS and have him write me off until 4 months, or try to go back after 3 ( my 9/21 date) ???
@Tabbycat , thank you, I've read your recovery &'it has been a difficult one!
@newlybionic, thank you also. I read your recovery and how difficult it was your first couple of months back to work. I'd rather try and avoid that with a possible extended month of before returning .
I'll keep you all posted tomorrow.

Please do, and I hope the dr and your office are reasonable!

If you can take the time off then I would do so. I had to go back as I couldn't get my short term disability extended any longer and I support myself.

If possible you should take as much time off as you can, I went back to work full time at 7weeks and it was tough, but I had no choice.

Good luck!!!

I'm at 10 wks and just started back full time today, came home exhausted. Work for a school dist and probably could have taken an additional couple weeks, but with the up coming holiday weekend, I feel I will be easing back in for the most part. I am also dealing with difficultly walking normally. Think I do kind of drag the surgical leg yet, kind of like a peg leg pirate, and the more tired I get the worse I think it is. Today I seemed to be on my feet a lot, think down the road it should equal out, have a fair amount of time I sit at a computer, so I think I'll be ok, if like you I had a busy, busy schedule with most of my day on my feet, guess I would stay off as long as you can and can afford it. I love to shop, but I've found myself lately when going to a store going in getting what I need and heading home. Think the inability to walk normal yet makes a person extra tired. Guess my advice to to trust your gut feelings, if you think you boss isn't going to work with you and do their part to make things a bit easier for you continue your at home rehab. Until someone walks in your shoes they won't totally understand what your dealing with daily.

No call today from work, so I'll wait until Tuesday to speak with my manager. Thank you all for your encouraging posts. Enjoy your weekend everyone! :loveshwr:

Woke up today with my knee feeling like it's in a vice, it feels so tight. Trouble bending it, more than ever??? Not sure what's going on? This week at PT was the first time they had me on my stomach with a strap around my foot pulling it up to bend my leg back. My bend back that way is so slight. Is that a good exercise to help that or should I be doing something else? Also, heat or ice??? For those of you who've done this recovery on your own (no formal PT) @Josephine, @sistersinhim, how did you deal with this?

I don't think any exercise which hurts at the time, or gives you more pain in the following few days can be a good idea. Trouble bending is from swelling, so definitely ice and elevate! I would also take as much time as you can before going back to work, you have to take into account the post op fatigue as well.
