TKR Seven years out, Right TKR

As I think you're learning, much better to do your own stretching and bending. Your body tells you when to stop. The PT can't feel inside your body so them pushing will just aggravate things.

Swelling ???
I'm 7 weeks out RTKR. I wake up with minimal swelling, but after being up and around on my leg for a short while, it gets all tight and hard to bend. Looking at the pics of which stage the swelling is at, mine's always the "moderate" pic. Is it normal to be having so much swelling at this point in recovery? I elevate & ice it thru out the day and sleep most of the night with my leg elevated. Is there anything else I can be doing to help? Thanks!

Some people swell more than others, but it was close to 3 months before I wasn't swelling a lot after being on my feet. I also found that my knee would swell even if I was sitting with my leg down at restaurants or anywhere else. Swelling also depends on your level of activity. The more active you are through the day at this point the more swelling you'll see. Take a look at the activity progression chart.

@julesm86 my surgery was on June 13th and my knee still swells and gets tight, specially if I'm a little active, it really doesn't take much for it to swell!

I've so enjoyed reading your journeys! I do concentrate on those of you around my surgery date just to see how you're doing. If I have a weird pain, unsure of things, or just need some encouragement~~I come here and find such dear friends :loveshwr: Thank you all! Keeping you in my prayers as we all continue healing and getting on with life

I know that looking around all of the different threads answered so many questions that otherwise I would have been driving my OS crazy with all the calls.

I hope you are doing well!!!

I'm doing okay ~ still having a lot of stiffness & some swelling. Tomorrow at PT I'll be on a treadmill in a water tank working on my walking~~since my knee was so bad for so long, I've not walked normal for years. I'm excited to see how it goes! :egypdance:I do see my OS next Wednesday and anxious to see what he says and get a better idea of when I'll be going back to work. I'm a medical assistant in a busy office, on my feet 90% of the time 10-12 hrs a day, so kinda nervous about that.:scaredycat: I'll keep you all posted.

My leg still tends to change colors~~it turns reddish/purple at times, & other times it's the same as my other leg??? Is this normal? :flabber:

I have the same thing and Josephine says it's OK. Mine is still doing it. Sometimes red, sometimes purple and sometimes normal looking. Crazy!

Yes, it's normal. Most times mine changed color when I was on my feet for a while, especially in the shower.

Today at PT I was able to share about BoneSmart with the rep for the X10 machine that was there checking up on it. I told her I've done much better with ROM after not letting them force my knee to bend. I do enjoy the X10 as it gently bends my knee but stops when I hit 2-3 lbs of resistance and does not continue to increase in degrees (like the CPM machine). I mentioned what I've learned here that the bend is already there right after surgery, just need to let the healing take place and the swelling to go down on its own. She was thrilled to hear this as it's not a popular belief with PT's. She was excited to check out our website. :yes!: I love sharing all I'm learning here as I trust this more than I do those at therapy as this is proven by those who've gone thru this whole process (& not just textbook knowledge). My ROM is slower than I'd like, but it'll come.

On to the in pool treadmill exercise I did today: it felt great being in the water with the weightlessness and practicing my walking. He had me in there for 7 minutes as he said I need to take it slow as it is working my knee. Well, yep, as good as it was, my knee is swollen and angry.:gaah: ugh.. Hopefully it'll settle down and I can keep my PT appt tomorrow as I'm anxious to do this again. I'm now icing, elevating & medicating...

You may find it difficult to do pt two days in a row, especially if your knee is swollen now from today's pt.

I work on my feet 10 to 12 hours a day and I went back to work after 12 weeks. My knee still swells up and I have to ice and elevate every night.

So excited! Went to PT today & just did the pool/hydrotherapy for 10 min with some squats, bends & lifts. Was still somewhat sore from yesterday so after 15-20 min of all that I called it quits and didn't do the rest of my normal exercises. She did measure me & my bend is 105 !!!!!! :yay: Im so excited!

Hello again! It's been terrible with the site down~~missed hearing from you all! So happy to catch up now! Today I had my 2 month check up with my OS & it went great! whew! I was so worried about an MUA, but he's happy with my 105/0. I'm off work until 9/21 unless he says I feel I need longer, so I have time to get stronger~yay! Im looking forward to catching up with all of you tonight! :loveshwr: Take care!

That's about the same amount of time off that I had. You can still have some swelling and pain but icing at night seems to take care of it nicely.
