TKR Second time lucky for LTKR

Can you elevate your leg at your desk somehow? That will help with swelling. Also, take an ice pack to work and ice while you’re at your desk. I often iced while driving back and forth to work because I was a teacher with no down time to sit. I wore pj/sweatpants for 4-5 months (even to work) due to tenderness and swelling.

I hate when I wear jeans. I can always see how right knee swells up.
Love hearing about your recovery. You deserve it after they messed with your dates

I'm glad it's summer over here and I can wear a light dress. Last TKR was in winter. I had very comfy yoga pants but had to keep one leg rolled up as the healing scar was so sensitive. I usually remembered to roll it down before answering the door but not always. Oops!

Agree @SherrieT as I think jeans when its warm is not good at the best of times. Work has been good with me allowing me to wear shorts but I can always tell them @Spex10 said it was ok to wear a dress.

Think I overdid it a little yesterday, dismantling wardrobes prior to the move. The back of my knee is sore probably due to bending and stretching.

We are moving from Milton Keynes and have bought a hotel in Torquay but I still need to work in London during the week so I am also on a room hunt. It all seems to be be "28th floor/ no lift" lol

Gosh. Ambitious. Good luck with the move and all that travelling. Hopefully once the hotel is up and running you'll be able to give up the London job.

Well, yesterday was a bit of an event.

Problems with the train so running 45 minutes late into work. I dislike being late so was trying to rush. Went to step up a kerb and my TKR leg didn't extend as I thought, only got my toes and over I went.

Luckily I grabbed some railings with my left hand and put my right the pavement and avoided my knee hitting the ground. Did push my ROM about 50 degrees further than it normally goes and had a sharp pain up my entire leg.

I was more embarrassed and angry with myself than anything. Some people did help me up and hand me my stick though.

Got into work and elevated for 30 mins. Had a good feel round and found a few tender spots but nothing that felt bad or displaced. Tried to elevate when I could and it seemed to settle during the day.

By the time I left for home I was walking as before and was just left with a tender spot on the inside of my knee.

Ice and elevation and it seems to have cleared overnight.

I am more angry and frustrated with myself than anything else. Really annoyed.

My final commute on the train is 2 weeks today. I had decided before my stumble that I was going to give up the stick on Monday however have decided to keep it for commutes until the end.

My confidence has obviously grown to over confidence. I think I was very lucky, could have been far worse.

Oh dear. That's what all of us dread I expect. Thank goodness you seem to have got away with it. Stick with the stick! If nothing else it signals to others to give you some leeway. Also, I do fancy myself as a grumpy old woman so it comes in handy for shaking it threatengly at 'young folk today'!

Shaking it? I have hit people with it and tripped up one guy who walked into me while he was watching tv on his iPhone.

I am a victim @Spex10 of impatience and overconfidence!

Welcome to life as an independent human being out and about in the world. If we’re going to do that, we need to be able to take the craziness and missteps that come with it. Early in my walking adventures I was forced to bound into the street to escape a lunging dog. It was a small dog, on a leash, but still, and leaping was not on my rehab plan. Like your knee mine got a little sore but no harm done. Just a minor imposition on the poor healing thing.

Your knee might be sorer today. That’s often the way of it. You know what to do: ice and elevate. And go about life because, in the end, that’s what humans do.

The commute really can be more of a problem than the job itself when going back to work after a TKR.

My commute seems to have more than its share of delays so I either end up standing for extending periods waiting to board or sat in one position too long while waiting for it to complete the journey.

Don't be surprised if your knee fusses at you for a week or so. You know what to do!

@Nick-UK How frightening!!
You know you really don't need to try to emulate me quite so much :bolt:
So glad you didn't end up on your knee. I have noticed that when I'm tired or in a rush that my right knee still doesn't automatically lift leg the right height. And then I stub my toe but I've gotten much better at keeping it to just a little stumble.
Torquay sounds wonderful. But how will you do a commute to London from there?? Isn't it quite a distance?
Do we start calling you Basil Fawlty now?

Take care of yourself and have fun getting back into the world.

Hi all,

Its been three years since my LTKR and a while since I was last on. Just been reading through some of my old threads and feeling quite a twinge of nostalgia.

I have actually come back for some advice, hopefully reaching out to a wider and more experienced forum.

Over the last year I have had increased swelling in my vastus lateralis (outside quad) where it joins with the knee, To start with it was just swollen but recently has started to become painful too. Sometimes through movement and sometimes if I have sat in a way it doesn't like as well.

The doctor is putting it down as one of those things but am concerned with it worsening that I may end up immobile if it carries on at this rate.

Has anyone had any experience of this or similar and can shed some light? Is there an exercise which will help?

Otherwise the op has been perfect and I have certainly had a new lease of life from it

Thanks in advance

Nick

Hi, Nick.....welcome back to the forum, although I'm sorry to hear it's a problem that's brought you back. I have a few questions for you that will help in trying to figure out what may be going on:

  1. Following your recovery, was your knee free of the type of pain you're having now?
  2. Am I correct in assuming that you cannot recall any strain or injury associated with the onset of your pain and swelling?
  3. Is there anything you do that will consistently make things worse or is it sporadic?
  4. What makes things better and do you have periods where there is no pain or swelling?

Exercise is not the answer when you are in pain, so please don't try to "work through" what pain you're feeling. Whether it's ice or heat and possibly and NSAID and/or Tylenol (paracetamol) for pain, you need to do whatever makes things better. Something in that area of your knee is inflamed and you need to have someone help you figure out why. And the pain/swelling definitely should not be getting worse.

I'm guessing it was your GP who told you it's just the way things are. Not a good response, as you've figured out. It's time to make an appointment with your surgeon to have him take a look.

Hi Jamie,

To answer your questions:

1. No pain at all really after a few days, if you look back through my thread i was very mobile
2. I don't recall anything
3. Its odd, im aware of it all the time but constantly painful would be an exaggeration. It can come on at odd times, sometimes moving and some just sat doing nothing
4. I dont think it gets better, just stops hurting

Thanks
