Bursitis is not fun.. I have such sympathy for you zauberflöte, Chris, suffering this condition Pre surgery.. I guess you know all to well the treatment. Rest to assist in reducing the inflammation. Identify the action or activities that flare it up. Acupuncture and massage may help.
Icing for up to 15 mins up to 3 times a day.

We have a latex mattress, a 6 inch medium latex, 2 inches of soft latex on the top of one side and 2 inches of memory foam on the other. Since way before my surgery, I could not tolerate the memory foam, but last night we thought we might give it a try.. So far, so good, hubby said I slept on the bursitis side nearly all night and was no where near as restless as normal.. Here's hoping..

And anyone else....
I slept on my op side for a bit last night!! Wow!!:egypdance: I am still more "secure" on my back. Who was it who pointed out how these little restrictions have gotten into our psyches?! Yes!!
This morning I played Handbells in a performance of a community handbell group I've been in for the past year. I had missed some rehearsals with the surgery (Songman had played in my place! He's great!) So today I was assigned different bells and didn't remember the music all that welll..... lol!! I didn't goof toooo much, and generally it all went well. No one was hurt in the making of the music. :yes!:
BUT, I have to say.... the 50 minutes of standing to rehearse, and then later (we were given a delightful brunch for our efforts, between rehearsal and performance) the 30 minutes' performance.....!! I Be A Sore Person! So... ho well, I won't even need to do that again.
My non-op side is still a bit bursitis-y sore to the touch or when I lay on it, but.... not much to complain about. My lower back sure hurt from all the standing ----!!! So, I learned something.

I've done the steroid injection for several things.
Thanks so much for the stories-- it was just what I wanted, only certainly way more than I expected. you are the steroid queen! YAY op-side sleeping!! And handbells, and Sore Person humor. :) At least handbells won't play a step low (well ok if you ring the wrong hand, then you're in trouble!)

Poppet and it may not even be bursitis, you know? it may actually be a fibromyalgia sensitive point on both sides, b/c there is one right there if i recall correctly. Last time I checked I had 13 out of what, 18? I have never been dx with it, don't want to go there. Resting before surgery, plus that lovely laser stuff, did quiet it down, but the treadmill sets it off, and I need that treadmill. I was dealing with the bursitis/whatever pretty well till Arthur came to town...
I'm glad you did ok on the memory foam-- I had two nights of it before the ZK came home and reclaimed his room. I thought, at the time, that I might like it better than my water bed, as far as pain relief goes. Will have to try again when he goes back to school. Your mattress sounds lovely to me! That's essentially what Mr ZF and the ZK have.

Songlady, how wonderful, I love the sound of bells, whether it is handbells or other. We have a huge tower in our capital and the sound just carries across the lake.. It is just beautiful, but I don't get to hear them often... Something ancient, sacred and happy comes to mind..

Sorry you are a bit sore, remember rest up, elevate, ice and meds the next day after a big day of activity, you would have used a lot of energy... Good for you though:)

zauberflöte, interesting you should raise fybromaliga, I was diagnosed with it about three years again. Wasn't too keen on the GP who announced it, but I have done so much research and believe he was probably right. I certainly qualify for around 15/18 tender points. But then again, even prior to surgery I found that soft tissue just about everywhere was tender.

Hubby is a trained remedial massage therapist.. Made him do the course, because I had to as part of my natural medicine qualification many years ago. I said if I have to do this, then so do you, because I want some of the benefits. Sadly our massage table has sat packed away for many years, but it will be revived when that magical retirement day comes around...

But for me I prefer Effleurage which is firm or light without dragging the skin and is performed using either the padded parts of the finger tips or the palmar surface of the hands, and works as a mechanical pump on the body to encourage venous and lymphatic return. It consists of four sub-categories:

Ethereal or aura strokes
Feathering, or nerve-stroking
Superficial effleurage
Deeper effleurage... Don't like this one!

468 sleeps.... Sigh!

Meg, so great you could perform. Yes, you will be sore. But that's what recovery is all about. Activity - then rest - then try again. Things will continue to get easier. Would love to hear those bells!

Just for the record, I woke this morning feeling as though I'd run a marathon yesterday! (All I did was play those darned handbells, though I did stand to do so!) So I went off to play my service, and it wasn't the most brilliant example of my playing......! lol. I've been at this congregation for 11 years, however, and they know what I've been through with my hip, so... if anyone noticed all those F's where I meant to play G's, they didn't say..... lol
In an hour I have to go to the year-end dinner and meeting/program of another organization I chair (a local organization of organists...!!) and then... tomorrow..... rest and ice! (or maybe this evening! :snork: )

Meg, sounds like you are getting caught up in a lot of activity. Please allow yourself time to rest after activities. We don't want a set back! Yes, ice tonight and tomorrow.

Songlady I actually think that standing still is worse than walking! I'm sorry you are suffering after your musical interlude, you obviously need to take things a little easier but the problem is we feel ok and end up doing too much! It feels so good to be able to sleep on your side doesn't it, I'm really not looking forward to being back on my back for 6 weeks!! :gaah:

Songlady that's ok, you were where you were supposed to be and God heard the right notes :) Tak it EASY tonight, girl!!! hey all see you out doing stuff, and they think you're all better:yikes:

, interesting you should raise fybromaliga, I was diagnosed with it about three years again....Effleurage.
Oh Poppet I'm so sorry. Everything at once except retirement. Have you made a paper chain to drape all over the house?? LOL. The link was fascinating, I didn't know they'd changed the criteria. And they mention Reynaud's, I have that-- my mom sweetly gave it to me, and my heart med makes it worse expecially if I am having a "this year I'm skinny" episode LOL. How I knew I was done with menopause was, the Reynaud's came back that winter. Great signpost, You Are Here!
That effleurage sounds like something i saw a PT at my pre-Christmas place do on a knee patient who was all swollen up. She also put on KT tape in a lymph-helpful pattern, and petted it down sooooooo gently. Looked like the mom she is :)

Janet, I am fully with you, standing is the worst thing. Sitting with feet on floor (I still avoid that unless knees hurt too much) next, and walking a little fixes many problems! Walking too far....then you need ice and elevation LOL.

Song lady, you are doing an amazing amount of things at six weeks. I second everyone else...standing is the pits! Remember that you still aren't anywhere near healed internally, perhaps you should cut yourself a bit more slack and pencil in some serious rest times on your calendar so you don't overdo it.

hi nmscienceteacher - 7 weeks today! :egypdance: Yes, you and LeeApril26 @zauberflöte @Kim22 @Peaches sandybeach Liveringer Littlejem Elosarabrab ByGosh and Jaycey are right - I pushed it this weekend! But I am glad to report that I am not much the worse for wear. A little sore, a few ouches here and there... but the rest of the week looks easy!
Littlejem and zauberflöte, you are so right; standing is much harder than walking, and of course I've known that for a long time; WHY did I think it would be different now, post-op? (Most other things remain the same: I cannot scale walls, walk on the ceiling, or spread my arms and fly! :rotfl: )
I'll be good for the next few days, I promise!

Sometimes you just have to learn the hard way Songlady so that you know to take it more easy next time, no chance of sitting to play?? Glad you are going to be good even if it is only for a few days!! :)

hi Littlejem, I guess I could have sat to play..... ho well. That group won't meet again now until October! :) I have one more "end of year" function this week at which I need to be official, but it's just a lunch meeting with folks I know well, on Wednesday. That ought to be fine. And I bring Songman to a Pain Center for a possible injection into a disc in his neck on Thursday:shocked: ... but it's only about 10 minutes away. See, I am SO trying to behave!!

Songlady I'm glad you feel better after your standing bell performance. It must have sounded just heavenly!
You seem to bounce back quite well from any of your overdoing. And you do a lot, with you job, and your Mom, and your errands - just doing your life is busy. But, luckily, you don't seem to have any big set backs - just some usual aches or soreness, thankfully, that seem to resolve well. That's good news!
I hope all goes well for Songman and his steroid injection this week. Let us know how he fares. I hope it works - it's supposed to be very good for disc related pain. As I mentioned on my thread (I think that's where it was), my husband had a steroid shot for 3 herniated discs in his lower spine, and it was like a miracle. After months of pain, it was gone within a few days! So I'm hoping for the same for your hubby!

I have to... um... brag? Check out this song; some of those sleepless moments I've been having post-op are well-captured here!
At the prospect of being told I'm "doing too much" (which, BTW, my mother has said to me for decades, lol) I will admit that we are HOSTING a Living Room Concert for this musician.... tonight!! Songboy is a huge fan, and months ago we answered a request for concert space in the US NorthEast... so in 30 minutes, some 25 folks will start to arrive to our living room (the guys moved all the furniture out or to the walls for seating.) Our living room was once 2 rooms and a hallway between, and someone took out those walls, so it's big..... I will sit in my recliner and listen! Wahoo!! I am excited!

Wow, Songlady: You really did a lot, what with the standing, handbells and all your normal life things and responsbilities. But I was so happy to hear you say that despite being sore, you felt ice and rest would overcome it. You know, I thought of YOU today while I was on the verge of being overly concerned about how the return of the usual work stress would affect me. The honeymoon phase at work is over and the same old stuff is hittiing the fan. Anyway, I suddenly started to baby myself mentally, thinking I couldn't handle all the stress right now. Then I thought of you and how you have had to handle so much that you shouldn't tackle right now during your recovery. I thought about you and your mom and the oxygen tank episode and I thought, well, heck, buckle up, sister, and yes, you can handle this silly nonsense stress if Songlady can tackle such larger things. So, Songlady, thank you for being an inspiration. You are a true example of "the show must go on." And I don't just mean your organ playing at church, either. :)

Hey Songlady your very own concert in your own house how wonderful, lucky girl. I listed to the song and I loved it, she's got a really distinctive, good voice, I'll bet you had a brilliant evening, let us know!! :)

The concert was such fun! Some 25 people arrived at the front door in the pouring rain last night with printouts of the email which proved they'd bought tickets, and we greeted them and helped people find seats. Songman and Songboy had moved the furniture to ring the outside of the room, and we had a few straight chairs, but on the ticket site people had been asked to bring cushions to sit on. So folks got comfortable, with some chat about the rain and how far they'd driven to get here... and she and her co-singer/player arrived and sang! There was also a Q and A session, and after they posed for photos, autographs, and sold CDs and T shirts (yes, I bought one!) Songboy had her sign his ukelele! I sure was tired, and slept like a log, and I am determined to be a slug today! lol

Peaches, thanks for the kind words. You gave a beautiful witness to what BS can do for us - we are bolstered and encouraged by each other, in addition to learning from Jo, moderators and BS friends! Support from others i the same boat (after all that rain, this is the appropriate image!) helps us all so much!! :friends:

Songlady Wow! So you had Julia Nunes singing in your living room with 25 guests last night? That must have been a lot of fun. And a great experience for Songboy if he is a big fan of hers. I didn't even know they had Living Room shows! Does she do that often, find people to host a place for her to sing? It's a very cool idea. And very avant-garde of you, at least to me it seems so. Good for you! It must give you a nice connection with your son sharing something like that with him. I'm glad that it went well and everyone enjoyed it, and you got a t-shirt for yourself. I listened to her song, and enjoyed her voice very much, too.
Well done Songlady. You're really shakin' and movin' now, aren't you? :)
