Scared newbie... Hip is shot. What if it doesn't work!!??

Butterfly Thanks so much for your concern. I've stayed away for a few days because I've been really depressed about the possibility of dental issues causing surgery to be cancelled. I see my OS tomorrow ... Very nervous. Also scared about what's going on with other leg, which has pain quite different from the hip pain. Other leg feels like a sciatic-type ache down my butt & back of thigh. & sometimes even further. Thats the leg that had knee done. Knee is fine. You'll hear from me when I get past tomorrow. Think good thoughts, ok? ❤❤❤

Butterfly Josephine Jamie calikat @Sharonsip Poppet Well, I have returned to the land of the living after being frightened by my dentist after viewing new X-rays which indicate the need for much work. I was terrified of surgery being cancelled. However, after seeing my OS today, I am greatly relieved; he's fine with me treating/removing my abscessed tooth (which was not troubling me at all) & not concerned about "decay" per se ( poetic, yes?). I have already been in touch with dentist to schedule this procedure asap.

So... What other tidbits did I come away with today that might be of interest?
1) For US folks, Medicare does not cover the cost of the robot that will be used to direct implantation of the prosthesis (supposedly, with greater precision -- SOUNDS good, at least!) & calculate leg length. An MRI a few days prior will be used for leg measurement purposes. Robot wants $550 for his services.

2) Doc will put some medication in wound at beginning & end to inhibit bleeding; does not promote clots. Anybody heard of this?

3) Doc is not a fan of compression stockings as he feels they are not made to accommodate larger legs & therefore are very uncomfortable. He uses something on feet -- I know not what.

4) Doc assured me of efficient pain mgmt; he puts something IN wound during surgery ( don't know if it's a device, a med, or a dead chicken), then pain pump, then meds. Assured me I'd have what I need at home.

5) Doc says anesthesia type to be determined pre-op by anesthesiologist & me. Assured me that I will be "snoring" with spinal if I so choose, which sounds good to ME! Made him promise I wouldn't wake up in the middle of being hammered & sawed. That's a good thing.

6) And finally, I asked doc if he anticipates any problem or any reason I would not do ok. Said no. Also said that the awful sciatica-like pain in non-operated leg might resolve once I'm straightened out, so to speak. Can't guarantee anything. Let us hope.

I'm sure none of this is news and is all probably TMI, but I'm so relieved that I wanted to share everything. I've been doing some catch-up on the newer threads & continuing to soak up info. I feel a lot better at the moment. You guys are The Best -- have I told you lately? ❤

Oh! Just read in local newspaper that the hospital I'm going to (as well as a few others) has a newish device for finding veins for IVs & such in hard-to-stick people, like me. Apparently it's great with kids and "the elderly" because it precludes sticking people multiple times when hunting for veins. Is this really new or am I just hearing about it?

Buying a leg lifter and going to shop for a recliner that meets Jo's requirements. Old Boy Ścout motto: "be prepared".

shrinkette does the robot charge for that dead chicken in your wound? That made me laugh! It's always good to be prepared. Looking forward to following your process.

Everything is sounding great, shrinkette! And there is no such thing as TMI on this forum. Everything you share will help someone here. It will certainly give them an idea of what questions to ask their OS. Every little bit helps.

Loved your post, honey!!! You sound so much more up-beat!!! And your surgeon sounds like a peach. All things are go and life is good----gonna get better soon!!! Hooray!
 
shrinkette, What does ETA stand for? I'm not up-to-date on some of these abbreviations, and I've seen this one several times recently!
 
BeckyR I wondered that myself, having seen it in several posts. I always thought it meant Estimated Time of Arrival, but that doesn't make sense in this context. Maybe others can enlighten us?

Heard of it but have no details. It's new-ish so your doc's cutting edge!

:yes!: I couldn't agree more! But he forgot to add that they can also be somewhat of a hazard on big legs as they can end up behaving like tourniquets! Which was the reason I dumped mine on day 3!

The 'something' are 'venous foot pumps', little bootees on your feet (unsurprisingly!) which inflate and deflate in a rhythm which aids the venous return in your legs. They're neat and comfortable. I wanted to keep mine but sadly they wouldn't let me! :boohoo:

Yep, he's very modern this chap! Usually it's something like morphine or fentanyl, straight into the joint after he's finished closing the wound - it would all run out if he did it earlier!

Josephine Thought you'd be interested in what seems like something out of the Space Age for finding veins, mentioned in my last long post; just google Accuvein. There's a video -- really amazing! I had mentioned it as something my hospital is now using, & I'm so thankful because locating my veins is always a big problem involving multiple, frustrated personnel. Much appreciation once again for all your valuable input.

shrinkette I like all kinds of books. One of my favorite authors is Diana Gabaldon. The outlander series, Michael Connelly, and I have read the twilight series, all the Harry Potter books and the Hunger games. So as you can tell I like a lot of different stuff. My latest read was 'The Shack'. I have added several to my kindle in prep for my hip surgery. I go Monday to meet with Dr, Kurtz...excited!!

Freaky freak Greetings! That's quite an eclectic book list!! I don't know Gabaldon, but will check her out. I don't do Hunger Games or Potter, but am BIG Connelly fan. He's got a new one coming out. Ever read Vince Flynn? He wrote great stuff & recently died at 47 from prostate cancer. Also... Try Lee Child... terrific.

Good luck with your appt on Monday. I've seen your doc's name mentioned in the posts, I think. Is he somewhere in the south east, like TN or GA? Let us know what he says & how you like him.

Going to theatre tomorrow -- part of our subscription. Seeing "Book of Mormon", which won all kinds of awards the year it opened. Will have to ride in wheelchair from car to seat as walk is a bit too much these days. Do you like the theatre?

shrinkette HEY -- SO glad to hear it's a go for your surgery! Just like me, you worried yourself sick for nothing. I am very good at that and I do it all the time. I can make myself nearly catatonic with fear. The only good side of it is the relief when you hear your fears were unfounded. Anyway, GOOD!

I don't know anything about the robot thing. Don't know if they use them here or not. I had those bootie things Josephine talked about. You wake up in the hospital with those on your feet and they kinda squish squish your feet and legs.

Sorry I was absent a day or two -- my grandson got really sick and after a couple trips to the ER, couple trips to t he urgent care, CT scans, x-rays and tests, they still aren't sure exactly what it is. He's referred to more docs next week. He has a cascade of seemngly unrelated symptoms, but at least the docs have ruled out most of the really awful things it could be.

Anyway, I'm still trudging along. Still in the sort of frustrated stage where I just want to be able to walk and do errands again without having to find a ride with someone. We're going to the grocery store tomorrow -- I am out of a lot of things.

The weather here has been horrible. So cold -- I think we got up to a balmy 30 degrees for a high today. So the snow we got Thursday is still all over my sidewalk, etc. It isn't supposed to get any better over the next few days. I've broken out my long underwear. I complained all summer about the heat and now I'm complaining about the cold. I guess I'm only happy during spring and fall. Oh, well . . .

So glad to see you are feeling more confident.
