Hi Shrinkette, I have read your thread (its lengthy) haha.... but very useful covering many of my questions. I go see the hip OS friday the 13th to see if I am at the right point for THR and to get on the schedule. They say they are scheduling for May now. Good grief.... I am still super worried about being able to perform the 90 degree stand and sit movements. Have a good day! Claire

shrinkette I love the theater. We go whenever we can. We have a wonderful performing arts here in Nashville. My favorite performance to date is Phantom of the Opera. But we have seen a variety from Stomp to Twelve Angry Men to Lion King!

Well I am now at the point with my hips that neither have hurt much in the last couple of weeks. I think it is primarily because I have taken a lot of cold medicine.

We have ice here In middle Tn and our lights have been out since about 6am but fireplace is going and piled under a blanket with my little dogs next to us so we are ok!

MajorHeidi. Thanks for your post & good luck with your appt. if you're that nervous about the 90-degree issue, would you consider a surgeon who performs anterior THR which has no restrictions? Just a thought. P

Your weather sounds...um... chilly. Won't make you miserable & tell you what it is here, but it's NIIIIIIIICE! LOL.

shrinkette Hope you are holding up well today. I got to go the grocery store today -- Bear came and took me. It snowed a little bit again last night, but some of it melted off. I HATE the snow. Always have.

Don't guess you have that problem much in Florida!

My grandson is still feeling awful today. I hope next week they can find out what is going on with him.

Love,

Milli

Butterfly Hi there! Was just gonna write you, but you got here first. I am doing ok... Much better mentally since seeing the OS, being in touch with dentist who called the other evening to discuss our plans, & starting the countdown. I think I'm finally at the place where I'm anxious to get on with it. I have a lot of pain when walking or standing on that OTHER hip & am much happier lying on my side on top of my bed. Sitting is second-best.

Went to theatre today using wheelchair to see "Book of Mormon". A big award-winner, but frankly a lot of dialogue was not clear to me... you know, when the audience laughs out loud & you don't know what was so funny because you didn't hear it (trust me -- we had great orchestra seats). Dinner afterwards at Mexican place with dear friends who had joined us @ theatre, only to find out that the hubby has a "dry esophagus" problem & couldn't get a piece of steak to go down. You don't want a description of THAT scene @ the table! Scared there, for a bit.

So... You finally got out to shop & restock the cupboard. And you're feeling frustrated & antsy at not being able to do more, independently, without having to rely on others to chauffeur you around. I can just imagine! And being cooped up even more so by the weather... poor baby. I'm sorry this seems to be going so slowly, but you do seem to be doing well physically, right? Now the finish line is in sight & you're chafing at the bit. What are we told here @ BS? Have PATIENCE!!! Soon you'll probably get the ok to drive... do you feel ready for that? When are you seeing your OS again?

The weather sounds dreadful. I would be terrified of slipping! Since you mentioned it, yes, my weather here is beautiful... Probably in 70s today & sunny. It's so weird to see so many parts of the country under snow & ice when I'm basking in warmth... Strange even after 35 years here. Originally from NYC, so I know about the snowy north. Wrap yourself in your puppy dogs, curl up with a good book, have some chocolate, & be grateful for THRs. Then have more chocolate. You DID get some today, didn't you!!?? I am quite sure chocolate makes up some part of the food pyramid or is a minimum daily requirement or something. Well, it should be!

Now -- most importantly -- your grandson. How old is he? I'm guessing a teenager, maybe? You said most bad things were ruled out, but there're still no answers. You must be SO upset & worried. You've described yourself as a catastrophizer (I'm paraphrasing)
-- a trait which I share -- and which can make us pretty nutso. I do hope they get to the bottom of this ASAP. Has he been pretty healthy up to now?

I better wind this up before they banish me from the forum due to extreme verbosity. My thoughts are with you for your grandson, & for you to soon be able to resume normalcy, whatever shape that takes for YOU.

Love,
Ellen

Shrinkette, thanks for mentioning looking at the anterior approach as an option. I found a link to search for OS's who do anterior THR, and amazingly I found my surgeon's name. A second amazing thing, I found a NY Times link for an article referencing the anterior approach, and my surgeon was the topic of the article! (a positive article).
And, I live in a town of about 150,000; I figured there was no way they could have anyone here who could do that. Surprise! So I will ask the PA on 12/13 if I might be a candidate. Thanks!!

shrinkette I have my date. Going with a bil. DAA so I can do them both at the same time. I could have chosen the SuperPath but they would have been staged a few weeks a part. So 1/21/2014 is the big day.

Greetings. Maybe some of you can offer some input on the subject of a recliner. I intended to buy one for my bedroom & indeed went looking at them today. Settled on one that I will have to order & hope it comes in on time, but when I got home with the dimensions in hand, we realized it probably won't work -- not enough space. So... How necessary is it? I thought it would be a great alternative to my bed, especially if I have a lot of trouble getting in & out. (Yes, I already have my leg lifter thingie!). Now I seem to have no choice. (And the one I picked was really nice, motorized, smushy... Oh well). I'm quite short & my bed is not a high one, but I'm having some trouble even now. Whaddya think? Now I'm nervous about it.

Hi shrinkette! I have to say that I found the recliner more comfortable than my bed. Since I was going to be in bed every night, it was good for me to spend most of the day in the recliner. We had bought the recliner last year at Costco, it is pretty basic, and my hubby put two 2x4s together and put underneath recliner to elevate it. I am 5'3 and that made it the perfect height for me to back up to and sit back into it. It has a handle to pull the leg part up, and then to get out of it you do have to push your legs, or leg into the chair to push it down. What I like better about the recliner is I can lay all the way back or havemy upper body upright, and the slight angle of the chair is just more comfortable than bed. Plus when I was first home and in bed, I had my legs in an immoblizer, and kind of propped my upper body up with pillows, but it was never as comfortable as the relcliner. Do you have any friends or neighbors that might have a recliner that you could try getting into and out of? Then you would still have time to find something before your surgery in Jan. That's just my 2 cents, I never slept in the recliner through the night, but I could have, it was that comfortable.

By the way, my photo pretty much shows my sleeping position in my bed, minus the cup of coffee!:heehee:

Maybe this sounds like a dumb question, but I'm trying to make myself feel better by finding some commonality. To wit, have any of you Bonesmarties -- either pre-op or already on the other side -- experienced severe pain in your hip or butt when rolling from side to side in bed? It drives me nuts! Changing positions during the night entails first questioning myself as to how badly I need to do it, and, once confirmed, tackling the necessary logistics. Not easy, my friends... Seems all the muscles you need for this maneuver are exactly where, you hurt. It's weird, because I can still sleep on either side (once I get there!). Thanks, guys.

Oh yes!! Prior to any surgery, I had completely lost the ability to sleep on my right side. After surgery, it was a good 5 months before I could even begin to try sleeping on that side. Now I can sleep on both sides comfortably. The actual act of rolling over from one side to the other is usually not much of a problem, but occasionally I get a flare up of bursitis on the right side, and that makes it a bit more challenging. All I can tell you is you have a lot to look forward to, Shrinkette. It won't happen right away, but I'm betting that sometime around early summer you're going to look up in amazement and think.....it doesn't hurt anymore!!

Sharon

sharonslp Thank you for your quick & comforting response. Being pre-op, the pain is pretty intense. Moving my legs in almost any way can produce major discomfort, so I'm quite guarded & careful. I just wish the awful ache down my UNoperated leg & back of thigh would abate because it hurts terribly on walking -- almost what I think sciatica is like. I have to hope that maybe because of LLD and/or compensation, it's happening, but I'm very scared that it won't resolve after THR on other hip. That right leg lengthened due to knee surgery, & left leg is bone-on-bone, shorter, & therefore there is quite a disparity. Any thoughts or wisdom?

Oh, by the way I took your advice and did start taking my Tylenol 1,000mgs each time, closer together, & gave up the 8-hour 650mg tabs. They don't really do much at this stage of the game, but they're the only meds I take. I'm looking forward to PAIN MEDS!!! Hope you're doing OK & continuing to enjoy a better quality of life. I appreciate your input & would probably love your latkes!

Has anyone used risers on their recliners for added height? I see that there are risers made specifically for recliners if the base is wooden. Hope to order a recliner tomorrow... Will be asking about base.

Butterfly Just wanted to say hi & see how you're progressing. Last I've read from you was that you're doing pretty well albeit anxious for your freedom & independence. Most understandable. Have you seen your OS again?

Well, I'm now just over month prior to surgery. Feels like I'm getting much worse, quickly. Today I actually bought an electric lift chair! After trying a number of recliners @ ŁazyBoy & Sears, I found none of them were high enough to permit me to get out of them except with much difficulty. I found a 50% off sale @ Sears on a lift. Just hope it fits in bedroom. But at least I won't be dependent on hubby to get out of it. Oh, Milli... I am SO scared I'm not going to get fixed & that my other leg won't get resolved. I know you described yourself pre-op as barely able to cross your kitchen on a walker -- remember? I'm there.. I can barely walk without pain on other side, then terrific pain in surgery hip the minute I get into/out of car, turn over in bed, turn that leg almost any which way, etc.

My tooth gets extracted on Monday, btw, so that will be taken care of. With a sedative shot, too!

Forgive me, dear Milli. Just feeling such pain EXCEPT when lying on my side in bed or sitting. This just can't go on.. Hopefully won't go on. I know you've said you're a big coward... But you did TWO! You should be so, so proud of yourself. And you're such a help to others here @ BS. Thank you for listening to this ramble. I hope that someday I'll read this stuff &, well, if not laugh, then just find it a dim memory. Love to you.

@shrinkette hi..sorry you're in so much pain, and teeth to boot
I actually had some implants done recently, which went very smoothly
gotta put this machine back together again...hope I do better than humpty dumpty
take care..it'll soon get better

@dickinson Aww, thanks for the kind words. Yup, am feeling pretty depressed, dependent, disabled, disgusted, diseased (ha!), and any other "dis" there is, probably. I see that my patience is pretty much gone in terms of my interactions with my nearest & dearest, my sarcasm level knows no bounds, my moods look like my EKG, and I'm hobbling around, pretty bent over. Don't I sound like the perfect dinner companion!!?? I used to be very charming & likable, really. I do have occasional days when I feel more optimistic about a better future.

So. How're you doing in the Land of Milk & Honey? Gearing up? Making preparations? I've read some of your posts. Are you in a lot of pain? Did you read my recent post about buying an electric lift chair? Thought I'd pamper myself. Ive got all the other aids from when I had my knee done last February.

Is it true that the fruits & veggies in Israel are great? I would love one of your tomatoes -- probably way better than the tasteless version over here. Let me know how you're doing!

actually we had a major snowstorm, which is unusual, and the country has pretty much come to a standstill
at least it's only a natural disaster
as for dis words, how about: discovery, disciplined ,distinct
I was looking for some positive ones but there not so easy to find
supercalifragilisticexpialidoshis!
re:recliner...somewhere I saw the anti-gravity lawn chair mentioned and I might get one, but definitely pamper yourself...you've had so much pain for so long
i'm pretty ok sitting and lying down..it's the walking that hurts
i'm sure you'll be likable again...think of it this way, as the great new 'passenger' song says
"only miss the sun when starts to snow, only hate the road when your missing home"
won't everyone be so de-lighted when you're back!

just wanted to add, discerning
and another line from the song (let her go) is
"only know you've been high when you're feeling low"
hang in
