Wow - that must be one of the quickest recoveries yet. :thumb:

I assume it's an automatic and the insurance company will be OK if the worst happens? I guess your left leg is still good for braking. :wink1:

Re: 33 Hrs in the hospital and home

Jolly good!

Re: 33 Hrs in the hospital and home

I had my first follow up this morning with the physician assistant. She removed the staples, said the wound looks great.

I was told that they were concerned that I might be pushing it due to my age and overall health and warned me to reel it in and not be overzealous.

I was told that I could drive in a week (I didn't mention that I drove, yes it's an automatic)
I was told that my outpatient PT would start in a week, and that would correct my gait and correct my limp. Continue with my Celebrex and stretching exercises @ home until further notice.

I recieved my travel card for metal detectors as I will need this in October because we are planning our 3rd Caribbean cruise.

I asked about the implant, was told it was a DJO implant. Followup with the OS in a month for an x-ray and will discuss a possible return to work. Honestly I can say that I am enjoying my hiatus from that place. It was needed, the stress was getting to me.

Re: 33 Hrs in the hospital and home

Rick, you are doing so well!!! But please do heed the advice of your medical team and don't push so hard that you cause yourself to backslide a bit at some point.

Also....I'm sorry to tell you that your "travel card" is basically useless. The airport staff won't be interested in seeing it because anyone could make such a card and they have rules for security screening. Just allow yourself an extra 15-30 minutes for check-in because you will probably set off the alarm and need further screening.

Hi Rick

I agree about the "travel card". I got an orthocard which I guess is the UK equivalent and flashed it at the screening guys in both London Heathrow and Miami. Basically they weren't interested (although they were pleasant about it).

I set off the walk through scanner in both airports. In London they took me aside and checked me all over with a wand. In Miami, I was put through a full body scanner (microwave I think it was) and this pinpointed on a graphic exactly where the hip implant was - very clever.

In both cases it took no more than 3 or 4 minutes extra - they are obviously very used to dealing with 'hippies'.

Re: Recovering in leaps and bounds

Rick....how are things going for you now???

Re: Recovering in leaps and bounds

Being homebound for 3 weeks... I painted the bathroom today.

I did NOT stand on a ladder or a chair or do any excessive reaching.

Tomorrow the trim gets painted and I have a few touch ups to do.

Re: Recovering in leaps and bounds

Wow, Rick, I am jealous! Being 38 certainly helps, but man, don't be afraid to hit the brake pedal. I am day 7, sore tight butt, able to walk well with a walker but just not steady enough for my cane, though I try to get up the nerve. Did you have much bruising or swelling? And can I ask what approach your OS used!

Cute puppy!

Re: Recovering in leaps and bounds

Whew, Rick!!! You're a real tiger, aren't you! Just be sure you don't have any problems after an activity like that. If you hurt, take a rest for a couple of days and try again.

But....I'm really, really impressed you could paint a room this soon after surgery!

Re: Recovering in leaps and bounds

At around 4 weeks out (earlier for you I see) there is a glimmer of hope. Things start to ease and you start to be able to move around more. Glad you could do your paint Rick. But please do take things easy. You are doing very well and you don't want a set back.

Re: THR, Knee pain

@Jollyroger: How's the pain doing now???

Re: THR, Knee pain

Great news Rick, wonderful to be pain free :)

@Jollyroger: How's the pain doing now???

Hi Jamie

Fingers crossed, it seems to be going away. After my lazy day on Sunday, things have improved significantly. Both the thigh and knee pain have diminished and I seem to be back on track for a quick recovery. I guess it was referred pain. Let's hope so!

Hi Jamie

I'm delighted to report that the knee pain seems (touch wood) to have gone. I'm really hoping that it was referred pain from the hip (as I first thought) and it is now all recovering well as the effects of the surgery wear off and the new hip settles in.

:thumb: Dy-no-MITE!!!! Great!

Re: THR, Knee pain

Fingers crossed and touch wood for me -- had my knee imaged today to see why it still bothers me so.... hate those MRI machines, I'm no good in them!

Re: Out of work question?

Hey all, I'm scheduled for my RTHR on 01/25.

In speaking with my boss this morning, he asked me to get him a note from the physician as to how long I'll be out of work.

When I met with the OS, he told me "no driving for 3 weeks, after that, we'll evaluate you to see when you can get back to work"

Now, I don't have a physical full time job as I am a 9-1-1 dispatcher for my local community. I volunteer on the FD on the ladder co, and the Ambulance and have taken a 3 month leave to give myself some room to relax.

I just found out from the staff at the OS that they are expecting me to be out of work for 12 weeks!!

I flipped out, 12 weeks??? Are you kidding me?? I was expecting to be out a month, 6 weeks tops!!

I know that each person is different with respect to recovery time, would you all be able to enlighten me as to what a realistic recovery time is, and how long any of you were out?

Thanks a million!

T-Minus 13 Days!:thumb:

I received my answer last Thursday.... 8 weeks total out of work. My last day of work was 1/24, surgery was 1/25. I am going back full time on 3/26! :yes 4:

I pushed myself to get back earlier than expected (a co-worker is going out on maternity leave at the end of april for 12-16 weeks) and I am happy to say that the Dr. cleared me back on the 26th with NO RESTRICTIONS!

A word of advise to anyone considering this surgery If you need a THR, DONT WAIT! That was my only regret, I lost out on 1.5 years of my life walking in pain and limping like no tomorrow. I can say, I'll be glad to back working keeping myself busy, the dog, well, he became my wingman over the past 8 weeks, I think he'll be upset being home alone again:cry:
