Revision TKR Revision RTKR due to laxity in ligament 3rd March 2015

I had a computer navigated surgery. The surgeon said he was using this because of the previous surgery and to get it exactly positioned. The first osteotomy i had was not good. The opening wedge they put in the femur travelled and basically all that was holding the bone was the plate. My knee joint inside collapsed as well and then i had to have it revised. The plate he said was too big for my leg also which he seemed surprised at. I don't know what damage the collapsed knee joint did to my knee because i walked on it for 6 months before anybody listened to me. Was complaining about the pain and was told its all part if healing and toughen up ect. In the UK its so hard getting info from doctors. Can implants be too big?

I've never found it difficult, these days you have a legal right to it. Be assertive!!
I don't know about the size, it just seems a bit coincidental to me.

Computers? Don't talk to me about computers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If it was using windows 8, then you are lucky not to have it put in your ear!! Honestly, I know nowt about computerised navigation, so I don't like it

I think you need to make an appt with your surgeon---be open---you are concerned that the joint looks too big to you. Point out where you feel the metal. I think that my new fake knees are bigger than my old ones---but it is hard to remember. You also need an appt to discuss your lack of rom.

The surgeon who did your operation should be your first port of call. He/She is the one who knows what was done at the operation, and who has access to your X-Rays. When you see the surgeon, go with a list of questions (written down) so that you don't forget to ask about everything you want to know. Ask to see your X-Rays too adn to have them explained. You have a right to all that information, so don't allow yourself to be put off.

If, after you see your surgeon, you are still not satisfied, you do have a right to a second opinion.

It's not easy to see from your photo what is going on, but I will tag @Orthodoc and ask if he has anything to suggest at this stage.

Of course it might be that the knee is not sticking out, but that the bone below it is hollowed in (due to previous ops)

I am awaiting the appointment for the surgeon who did the op. Not sure how long it will be. In the meantime i will continue to work on the rom and see how it goes. I measured at 70 today. Seems i have been generous saying 80 :-( I was curious if anyone elses new joints jutted as much. I

It is very hard to make any comments based on that picture. Better pictures would be very helpful. As per the size issue, remember that your are only 11 weeks from the knee replacement. Swelling of the knee is normal for 6 months to a year! Obviously I do not know about the size of your implants, but most surgeons are pretty particular to make sure they are sized correctly in the OR.

I agree that it's pretty tough to tell much from the photo you posted. An xray would be better if you can get it. I also agree you need to see the surgeon. It would be very unlikely that the surgeon implanted an inappropriately sized prosthesis, so try not to worry about that.

Have uploaded some mainly standing up pictures and last couple are sitting down. Could my kneecap have dislocated here? I cant feel or see it. Im not going to wait for the referral. Im going to ring the surgeons secretary today and try and get a quicker appointment.

Phoned the hospital and told i have to wait until they receive my gp referral letter before they will let me see the surgeon. I explained that i felt something was wrong and need to be seen. Still refused and told to see the nurse at my follow up in February.

Hi Chereb ... I still cannot be much use to you, but I see why you are concerned. It definitely doesn't look right. To my untrained eye, the surgical knee seems lower than the other one. Maybe go straight to the ER? I don't know how specialists operate in UK, but why would you need a referral from a GP to see the OS who did your operation?

Thanks Ellen i have found his secretaries email address and going to email pictures. I was thinking of a&e in my local hospital as i travel 25 miles to this one.

If they don't get a referral from a GP, they aren't allowed to see you, they aren't trying to be unhelpful. All you can do is pressurise your GP to get a move on. It's a bit like snakes and ladders, once you are discharged, then it's down the snake to the beginning.

Tykey i understand that but 6+ weeks is a long time to suffer. The surgeon did say if i had any problems to phone and he would see me asap. I have sent email now with pictures and will wait and see what happens now. The last time i felt like this i spent 6 months walking on a broken femur and never pushed for answers. I dont want to go through a similar situation again.

Good for you. I can now see why you are concerned. I'm glad you pushed and shoved until they did the right thing and got you in to see the surgeon. Sometimes you just want to tear your hair out with the "administrative" falderal that we have to go through to get the job done! Please let us know the outcome of your meeting with the doctor!
