I have some questions to ask you:

1. what are your pain levels right now?
(remember the 1-10 scale: 1 = no pain and 10 = the worst you can imagine. And don't forget that 'pain' also includes soreness, burning, stabbing, throbbing, aching, swelling and stiffness)

2. are you still taking any pain medications, if so, what, how much (in mg please) and how often?

3. are you still icing your knee and if so how often and for how long?

4. are you still elevating your knee and if so how high, how often and for how long?

5. what is the detail of your daily activities? What do you do in the way of housework, cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc., and

6. what kind of PT/exercises are you doing? How much and how often? Details would are required!

I'll be back shortly!

1. what are your pain levels right now?
My pain level is probably 5/6 but this burning/nipping pain is a shock pain if that makes any sense as it is only as i bend. The area on top is also very painful to light touch.
2. are you still taking any pain medications, if so, what, how much (in mg please) and how often?
Taking tramadol x8 50mg paracetamol 8 500mg brufen 400mg x3
3. are you still icing your knee and if so how often and for how long?
Still icing as much as possible although the last few days only managed 3 or 4 times as i was out at dance exams ect.
4. are you still elevating your knee and if so how high, how often and for how long?
Yes as much as possible same as icing
5. what is the detail of your daily activities? What do you do in the way of housework, cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc.
Hoovering, cleaning kitchen up, beds, online shopping so putting away only. Walk my daughter to school and back daily.
6. what kind of PT/exercises are you doing? How much and how often? Details would are required!
Leg raises x5 heel slides x10 also wall sliding and holding leg in air and letting gravity help. Twice a day

Sounds like an awful lot of daily activity to me! Methinks you are doing too much, you're not even 6 weeks yet! Chill more!
Can someone else not do school run? Or share with someone so that at least you are only doing one trip to school? Cut back on housework and sit down !

Unfortunately nobody to help with school as its just me and hubby and hes gone to work by then.
Probably i am doing too much at home and am just going to have to leave stuff. My leg hasnt been up resting as much the last few days. Some things have been unavoidable and some have. Guess its down to prioritising whats important just now x

Prioritizing is the hardest part of this for me, too. My husband is wonderful help but doesn't notice all the things a woman does. The house hasn't had a good cleaning since April, the fridge needs a good scrubbing, the sink needs scouring, the cabinets need wiping down . . .

It's so easy to do 'just a little too much' and then pay for it the next day.

I keep reminding myself I am the only one who notices these things. They will be there waiting for me when I'm able to do them. For now, our top priority must be getting ourselves back on our feet at whatever pace the knee will allow that. Yeah, I'm finally getting that the knee is the one in charge.

chereb We are TKR buddies from 1st November. Following tips from everybody on this BS site, I haven't pushed my physio any more than has been bearable. At one point I couldn't even lift my leg an inch from the floor and my husband had to lift the leg into the bed for me during the night. Then I learned the knack of using the other foot to take some of the weight and realized that I could do similarly during elevation exercises which were always excruciating if I attempted them "cold".

Also, don't do your exercises unless you take your painkillers regularly as that will make the effort a lot worse and actually work against you with the attempt to do what you are capable of.

Just keep trying little by little. I'm STILL getting jabbing pains and dull aches in different areas, including the shin. Most of that is to do with using the leg "strangely" and so muscles, tendons, ligaments are screaming at you. Also, nerve endings take a long time to knit together and they give of pain signals in the process.

You'll be fine - I doubted I ever would, but PT at hospital tells me I'm doing well for 5 weeks. I was referred to my local hospital by the team where I had the surgery done (fortnight check up post-op), simply to keep me on the right track to gaining the ROM I need, which my PT tells me is 3 months, not 6 weeks as is sometimes mentioned. If that didn't happen for you, get your GP to refer you or contact the orthopaedic team where you had the surgery done and they will arrange it.

Remember, in the UK - if you don't ask you don't get!

Can swelling cause that kind of pain at the incision site? It feels almost like its stretching apart. I spent a long time with my knee in a bent position yesterday as i was at a dance exam with my youngest. Mazza thats goodto know about the ROM as i thought it was 6 weeks too. I am going to ask for a physio referral if i can get a gp appointment this week x

Honestly, you're doing fine. At your stage I was convinced I'd never walk again, that there'd been some dreadful mistake in theatre! You have a long way to go yet but you will get there

6 weeks and 3 days. Noticed an improvement over the weekend with swelling which also furthered my flexion a bit, been extra busy today with a lot of time on my feet. Swelling back with a bang and rom fell back lol. Hopefully a reasonable day tomorrow will put things back again :-)

Osteotomy January 2009
Osteotomy revision September 2009
TKR 1st November 2013

Ok so i am 10 weeks and 3 days post op and i am not seeing anything much in improvement. My ROM is around 85-90 degrees. I have been trying to do the stationary bike for 2 weeks. I have to push really hard to get a rotation then after a few mins it slackens enough for me to turn it without pushing too hard. I do this 2-3 times a day for 5 mins.
I also am sitting trying to use my other leg to push the tkr under the chair.
I sit on the table and swing my leg back and forth.
I lie on the floor and slide my leg down the wall. Also heel slides.
I am working every day and seeing nothing in results. For instance i come off after 5 mins on the bike and i am maybe a bit looser to 100degrees. Within 20 mins im back at 85-90 degrees. I really dont know what else to do.

I am 11 weeks post op and struggle to get past 80-90. I went to my GP and he said the joint is very prominent. Almost like a step out above the tibia. He said he has never seen this before but he has only seen elderly TKRs. I am 42. Does anyone else have a very prominent joint? I am being referred to surgeon to look at this.

Hi Chereb ... Nice knees there. I can see what you mean about "prominent", but are you and your GP sure that it is not swelling that doesn't extend below the knee, thereby making the top of the leg look more outstanding than the bottom of the leg? (Did that just make sense? I tend to waffle). Although it does look a little round shaped in the front there. Did it develop over time? Or did it just pop up one day? I am afraid I cannot help you, as I too am having trouble with ROM, struggling to get past 75. I would think it might be important whether it just "happened" or took time to develop. To me, it does look like swelling and it stops right there, but that is something the GP would be aware of, so I will tag @Jamie (one of the moderators) who has heaps more knowledge than I do.

I do hope that it is something that is easily diagnosed, easily treated and you can go back to recovering the knee.

All the best to you ...

Ellen ...

Hi Ellen not swelling as you can feel the metal right under. Its been like that since beginning although more noticeable lately with the swelling down.

My heavens ... that does sound unusual - to me anyway as I have so much swelling still after 12 weeks that I can't even find my new kneecap. :snork:

Hopefully someone else on here may have had the same problem and can help you.

Lol Helen the top of the knee is still swollen but right at the bottom there is none and you can feel its metal when you prod it.

You need to see the X-ray, It's disappointing that the GP didn't offer to show it to you when you saw him. I'd make sure you review the photo when you see the surgeon again.

The GP didn't have the x-ray. He was talking very safely as in he thinks its way too prominent but maybe that was normal for my age as he only sees elderly patients. A second opinion was also mentioned but after i ask the surgeon why i cant bend the knee past 85-90

Before you go, hopefully someone will provide you with how a successful one will look. There are some posted on here. If you don't get one, I'll have a search for mine. Also have a look on google images, there are plenty there as well.
I see you are nobbut a young lass, so were there any complicating factors with your knee which required a replacement so early? Maybe it's not a standard bit, as the distal femoral osteotomy you had might have been a significant factor in what the surgeon did.
