[Bonesmart.org] Revision RTKR due to laxity in ligament 3rd March 2015

Lots more pain today. Keeping to a schedule with the pain relief. Worst part is one hour before I'm due them again and its wearing off. Doing nothing except going to the toilet. Also a lot more swollen today. How long is it safe to ice for? And how long of a gap between icing?

As long as you make sure there is some material (like a tea towel or pillow case) between the ice and your skin, you can ice for as long as you like. Some people may warn against using it for too long, but you do need to ice for at least 40 minutes at a time, in order to get the full benefit. You can ice whenever you feel you need it.

I used gel packs (from the pharmacy) and I would leave one on until it thawed. Then, if I still felt I need it, I would replace it with another. I often went to sleep with an ice pack on my knee.
I kept several in the freezer, so that I could rotate them.

@Celle i have 3 packs lol. Rotate as required. Was just worrying if I was doing it too long. Trying to be a patient patient My husband has a week off work now which is great as i can just rest up. Struggling to do leg lifts now and i could do them on Wednesday no problem. Wonder if its because the blocks worn off?

Congrats on your revision surgery! You went home rather quickly too, this gives me hope that I will be home in 3 days too! The augments you speak of are used to fill the area of bone that you lost, sort of like stacking building blocks on top of each other. So happy that they were able to stabilize your knee and thankful that the revision was not due to an infection.

Hope you have a great day today!!

Thank you :-) The surgeon said it was rare to go home 1 day after surgery but he was happy to let me go as i had met all the criteria with physio and pain relief under control. Hope your revision goes well.

I agree---just make sure that you have something between the ice pack and the skin, and you can ice for as long as you wish---40-45 minutes---again, I concur---should be the minimum. Ice for an hour or so---elevate and rest and it will help with some of the pain, too.

I pretty much iced 24/7 - unless I was going to the restroom, shower or going to a doctor's appointment. I had the ice therapy machine from insurance for 3 weeks, then ended up buying one - definitely a fabulous purchase. I even slept with mine on, I just added another layer between the cuff and my skin when I slept.

Thank you. Have been icing almost constantly. Pretty swollen today. Hope to get a reasonable sleep tonight!

Day 4 post op and things are going ok i think. Gentle heel slides only and only getting up to go upstairs to the toilet or get something from the kitchen. Pain is manageable and only really sore the hour leading up to my next dose. Feels different than the primary TKR. Looks different too.

Could someone merge my revision thread with this please?

I have merged the threads for you.

Well pain has kicked up a notch. Got that horrible pain when you stand up and the whole leg hurts really badly. Had forgotten about that!! Bruising has now started to come out. Had a reasonable sleep again. I no longer seem to have the stick out at the bottom bit that was there from the original TKR. Looks reasonably flat now.

A bit concerned that the top of my incision looks infected. Have called the nurse and she is going to come in and check it for me. :-(
