Hinged Joint Revision Complete, recovery continues

Pumpkin, I am so glad to hear that you got a night sleep. Its ruff when you don't sleep. Its bitter cold here and I am sure its there also. Hows the snow? Is it snowing? We are sure off to have a ruff time with the weather. Stay warm my friend. Tashia

Pumpkln, have changed your title thread as requested. Hope you're feeling better and staying safe and warm.

Thanks! bottomshollow - feeling better, knee better, cold better, and spider bite better:).
Staying home, 6 inches of snow fell last nite. Looking like a hot chocolate and movie day.

(((pumpkin))) Sounds like a good way to spend the day. Let us know what you find out at your appointment next week.
No snow here--it's beautiful and sunny looking--but 10 degrees. Brrr. I'm hunkered down with grading papers. And a Bonesmart break...

Saw my GP today, she had the report from the bonescan, it said "unable to rule out loosening".
Tomorrow I will see the OS and find out what that means for my knee.

Saw the OS this afternoon, bone scan shows lots of inflammation, not clear there is loosening. He said it was up to me, but he was strongly in favor of revision. He did not think being inactive to avoid pain is a good way to live, and I agree. I see the revisionist on January 16th, they will discuss my case after that.
He said the TKR I have is very well aligned and stable.

It is not working, the implant being a size too big, and me being the Princess and the Pea. I liken it to having a rubberband around your knee that you cannot take off.
Experiencing many emotions, Relieved, Sad, Glad, and Depressed about all of this, but hopeful for a better outcome.

After the appointment we went to Costco, just walking around flared up my knee, it does not take much. I will probably pay the price tonight.

Looks like I am flying under the radar here.
I am on steroids until Sunday for my Asthma, nice side effect is my knee feels better, unfortunately it won't last.
Plan to start keeping track of my activities, pain levels, sleep, and pain medications, to get a better idea of how much activity flares my knee.
I have been waking up between 3:30 am and 4:00 am, and unable to fall back to sleep, even with tylenol on board.
Would be nice to just fall right back to sleep.
With out Bonesmart I would be lost with out the support of other members, and their stories.
:santa:

So sorry to hear this news Chris. At least you are getting some answers, although they may not be exactly what we want. I think it's a good idea to keep track of your activity and see if you can spot any trends.

I do know that your support system will be on board no matter what happens next. You are such a giving person and have supported me in my time of need, and shared the good news too! We will rally behind you my friend, no worries there!

Please take good care and keep us posted!

Be well,

Dawn

Thanks Dawn,
Your support is much appreciated!
Not much to report, except the steroids for asthma really do help the knee feel better.

Ok just a rant at 1in the morning due to discomfort. At a month im still not sleeping through the night. Especially after therapy my PT is aggressive there was one exercise he had me do were I laid on my stomach with my legs over the edge and put weights on my ankle to help straighten my knee out. Thought that was a little over the top so thats where I drew the line. Anyway my rom is 6 and 120 but thats 120 with him pushing my leg in, does that count or am I 115 with out his help?. I think im progressing ok. Then I get a call from a family member and they tell me a friend of theirs had a tkr and was playing golf at 2 months so I should be better soon. I know everyone is different but it really made me feel frustraded like im babying it and not pushing hard enough. Anyway thats my rant for the night

Hi Eddie,

You are in the very early days and will be for some time. Your rom is pretty good by any measure. Our mantras are less pain more gain, so if it hurts, tell pt to stop immediately. You are paying them, and you are in control, so don't let them do something that hurts like that.

Regarding the playing golf at 2 months, that is an exceptional recovery and not one that most experience. Tell your well meaning friends and family that each recovery is different, and that you are progressing very well. The knee is in charge, and your physiology will play a big part in how quickly you get your life back. There is a video on here of a TKR surgery, under our member Tim, referee54, and it shows how much trauma your poor knee went through. This might give those who think you should better sooner, something to think about.

Also, perhaps you might start your own thread and tell us more about yourself. You will get lots of personal advice and support which I think would be very helpful.

Do take care,

Dawn

Hi Eddie,
Welcome to Bonesmart!
You are doing great, I agree with Dawn, each recovery is different. Some have a remarkable recovery and are back at full speed in a few months. Most take longer, 6 months to start getting back to normal, and a year or longer for a full recovery. Your ROM is right where it should be, tell the PT to slow down, pain = no gain after a TKR.
You might want to start your own thread for more imput from other members, and a list of helpful reading from one of the moderators.
Yes, it is wonderful to be able to rant about your pain etc 24/7 and know someone is always here.
Follow the Bonesmart mantra Rest, Ice, Elevate, and Medicate on schedule and you will do great.
Here is a link to sleepless in Bonesmart land for middle of the nite ranting about being awake. https://bonesmart.org/forum/threads/sleepless-in-bonesmart-land.9101/page-25#post-530702

Thanks for the information and surport. I just cancelled therapy for today, cant see any good coming out of it, I can barely walk its so sore. Thanks im going to bounce over to the sleepless thread.

At a month im still not sleeping through the night.
Eddie---why don't you begin a thread of your own so that others can all see it and pitch in and respond?

As others have said, you are, a month out of a TKR---it seems like a long enough time, but you are very, very early in recovery right now, and sleep issues are to be expected; almost all of us had them---I did, too. You have to have patience and realize that these recoveries can take much longer than we would like them to---patience is the key!

Especially after therapy my PT is aggressive
No---No---No!!! PT should not be aggressive and should only be done to the point of discomfort and no further. Aggressive PT does not speed up recovery; it slows it down and aggravates the surgical knee even more.

hen I get a call from a family member and they tell me a friend of theirs had a tkr and was playing golf at 2 months
We have all heard of these folks---but have never actually seen one; they are like the Yeti or Bigfoot; everybody has heard of them but they are yet to be spotted. I have never personally met one who recovered that fast.

I know everyone is different but it really made me feel frustraded like im babying it and not pushing hard enough.
Do not get into the "vicious cycle routine"---I am not progressing fast enough so I have to work harder---then, you do not see the results that you want, so you work harder still---and then you slow down even more!!!

It seems contrary to what we have been taught and to what we want to do, but slowly down and taking a gentler approach reaps more benefits and rewards.

Referee54 loved the Yeti and Bigfoot reference. I gave her the losing perspective of time over the years analogy but I so like yours better:) . I did watch the videos and read so much before I committed to the surgery. I was told it was my only option 2 years ago and after meeting a OS out of NYU three months ago decided it time and in a couple of months I'm hoping to be telling everyone how it was the best thing I could have done for myself.

@Jamie Please change the title to my thread to: Revision ahead, ligaments unstable
Saw the revisionist on Thursday, the ligaments on the outside of my knee are stretched, my knee is unstable and causing all the knee pain. You should have heard all the clicking and clacking. This exam was by far the most thorough exam I have received from an OS.
I have a choice of a brace, or a revision. I have decided to go ahead with the revision, sometime in April.
Still having trouble wrapping my head around all this, I am sure I will get there with time.
Thanks for taking the time to read my thread!

Pumpkin, I'm so sorry about all that you're going through. Here you are, bouncing around making everyone else in the threads feel better and I had no idea that you were going through all that you are. I am going to keep good thoughts that your revision scheduled for April is a brilliant success and you get back to living your life how you want to! For what it's worth, I think your choice to do a revision over having to wear a brace is a good one. The brace would just mask what's going on and would still affect your daily life. With the revision, you can get it fixed! :console2:

Did he rock your lower leg sideways back and forth like a clock pendulum? I had that happen without any warning and was quite shocked both by the maneuver and how loose my knee is. My looseness is on the medial side. So sorry you have to go through all this. You're being noble and brave and I hope you are justly reward on the other side!
