THR Replacement on 22nd May<

Hope you're doing well and resting comfortably.
Also hoping your pain is well managed and you are icing.
Give us a shout out on the Recovery side when you're able.
We'll be there waiting to hear....

Here's the Recovery Article to read in the meantime.
A peaceful evening to you!

Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery. While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each, member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

Hello. I made it through the op. Anterior. Can't lift leg. Agony getting in and out of bed. They keep saying I should be home by now. Brain willing but body and lrg won't respond.

Day 4 now. I screamed when night staff threw me in the bed. Pulled out for weekend in night, refused to go back to bed and sat in chair. Should have had baby instead. Much less painful.

:console2:@oh no, @ckred . Sorry you are struggling so these first days. Sounds like they don't have your pain meds sorted...
The infamous log leg syndrome...where it doesn't listen or move on its own is quite common. Should dissipate as you are able to move about more..and one of mine was off and on for a month.
They never offered me ice at hospital but I was out quickly and it helped so much.
Ask if you aren't already icing!
It is going to get better...healing hugs coming your way.

Thanks. On my own today in Ward. Helps to talk to other patients.

Be sure and work with staff to get your pain managed. It sometimes takes awhile to get the combination that works for you.

You might want to start your own recovery thread in the recovery section. If you need help doing this just give a shout.

Hi. Got through to recovery stage. I had anterior Spinal block. No problems. 6 says in now and my biggest problem is trying to raise leg off floor. My brain says do it leg says no. Doing all the exercises. In Great pain. Only patient on the ward. Hypnosis maybe?

@ckred I moved your post (above) to your original thread as it had the beginning of your recovery story already (now in hip recovery area). If you would like a new thread title just give a shout.

What pain medication are you taking? Sounds like you are under medicated. Are you icing. Ask for an ice pack - they have them in the physio area.

Don't worry about the log leg - this will soon ease.

I had morphine. Sick. Paracetamol, oxycontin and diazepam, both sent me to lala land and sleepy. Think just paracetamol. Now woken with feeling sick and loose bowel. Think they will need my bed today.

So much physio yesterday everything hurts today. Felt they had target to reach. I shall do my own exercises today. Leg still dead but can manoeuvre a little with leg lifter. Advise anyone embarking on the road to build upper body strength to help to move especially in bed.

I avoided the morphine. Many patients can't tolerate this drug. I found staff really pushed morphine and physio there. Just say no. You don't need all that exercise and the drugs are probably slowing you down. It will get better - been there done that!

Hi All
Day 10. not much improvement. At home now and not mobile. Still can't lift leg. Pain at back of thigh and above knee. Anterior approach. Hubby now hurt his back so not good for either! Can't get into bed as bad leg won't go up, not even with leg lifter. Sleeping on recliner with loads pillows. Sore bum sitting down all time. Home so small can only fit in 5 steps across. Will try walking with crutches outside I think. Hospital gave me muscle relaxing drug which must have helped movement. Asking GP for some now but apparently addictive.

I'm sorry you are having a rough go of things.
That log leg is so annoying, ditto on the behind not liking all the sitting.
And poor hubby...terrible timing.
Didn't need that complication.
Are you taking pain meds at all or just muscle relaxer.
Really to early to be off of everything..
Almost anything can be addictive if you overuse and abuse...
This was a major surgery!
OS won't refill something for you?
It does get better...keep the faith.

Hi there,
Sounds like you're having a bit of a rough time. It will get better, it's still the very early days of your
recovery. Hopefully you've read the Recovery Article. Please do, if you haven't.
You don't need to be very active at this point.

I slept on a recliner for three weeks. Suprisingly well too!
The log leg will gradually get better. This recovery biz takes patience for sure.
A peaceful weekend to you!
@ckred

I'm so sorry for all the pain you're going thru, and your husband's injury as well! From everything I've read here, the bad stuff right that's happening right now is temporary, and will be all be better to the point that you'll be glad you went for it. I know that's not much consolation, but I just want you to feel better, @ckred! All the best!

asking GP for some now but apparently addictive
It's not additive if you are using it to manage your pain. Are you icing and elevating? All this will ease - just give it time.

Hi @ckred
Stopping by to say Hi :hi:
Hope you're feeling some improvement since last week. I know you were having a rough time.
Is it becoming any easier to lift your leg?
Leave us an update if you're able. Would like to know how your recovery is coming along.
Hope this week is good!

Hi. Thanks for asking. Couple of good days. Managed to lift leg standing with knee bent so got in car and had a ride. Went to bingo and took pillow and they got me a higher chair. It was a long first outing so suffering today. Hopefully feel better tomorrow.

Pain generally less. Two crutches. Still finding it very tiring after about 250 ft. Definitely better than last week. Have physio follow up next week. Dreading that. If they try to pull me around I will tell them to stop.

So glad you are feeling better, you are on the way now, but remember its a big operation and your whole body needs time to recover so it will take timexx

Hi all. Update for you. 4 weeks now and managed to get into the bed for the first time last night. After a few hours I had an incredible pain in the back of my heel of operated leg like it was on fire or had been bitten. Had to get up. What do you think caused that. Doc wants me to be in bed not recliner as both legs and feet extremely swollen.
