Revised PKR to TKR Patellofemoral PKR with Ehlers Danlos hypermobility

MSuki is correct. Multiple surgeries wear you down and it can take longer for your body to heal with each one. And….you are still in the “easily fatigued” stage of recovery even if you had only one surgery. That can last up to 6 months for some people In varying degrees.

You are posting in the correct place for questions. Keep ‘em coming. We’re here to give you answers and information.

@Mochapup I had a TKR just a couple of days after your surgery and I am definitely still dealing with significant fatigue.

This article helped me understand the fatigue issue -- and why it takes so long to regain stamina:
(be sure to scroll down to the second post in this thread).

You may have “just” sat at a park table, but you had to get ready to make this trip, get your dog leashed up and ready, drive or walk to the park, navigate on surfaces that may not have been flat and smooth to get to your sitting point, and then do it all in reverse to go home again. That is a pretty big outing for someone who is just a little over 4 weeks out from surgery. I hope you allowed yourself to rest and take it easy the rest of the day. Outings are good for you mentally and physically, but just be aware of how much is really involved with each one you attempt. Even simple tasks such as standing to make a simple meal for yourself is a big deal at this point. Hang in there….it gets better with time.

That us such a helpful reminder! It WAS a big effort, especially to keep an eye on my Jack Russell and make sure he behaved, and to make sure other dogs didn’t jump on me. Probably won’t take an outing there again until I am off crutches. Now that my incision is less raw looking, it’s tempting to think it’s way more healed than it is. Had PT today and hope to focus on rest tomorrow.

Happy One Month Anniversary, Mochapup!
Many blessings to you in this New Year!
@Mochapup

Hello! I am about 4 weeks out from PKR and frequently getting outer hip pain on the op side. It’s not the first time for pain there but has been awhile. In fact, had right
hip impingement and labral repair surgery. Could my gait be causing this
pain? Other possibilities?

It definitely could be gait issues. If you feel that is a possibility and the pain doesn’t go away, try to figure out if there is any pattern to it…..like, if I do “xxxx” then I hurt 12-24 hours later. Then schedule an appointment with a physical therapist who does gait evaluation and training. Then you’ll know for sure and hopefully decrease the pain.

Many times we think we’re walking correctly after surgery, but actually are favoring one leg or the other. Another possibility could lie with your shoes. If you haven’t replaced the shoes you wear most frequently, you could be walking on old wear patterns that impact your gait. Check the bottoms of your shoes, and if there is uneven wearing on any of them, they should be replaced if you wear them frequently.

Thank you, Jamie! Those are great suggestions, and i can tell there is still some
Swaying and unevenness at times in my gait-using one crutch. Will carry on!

Another question! I didn’t have much bruising right after surgery but now at four weeks have a large purple area of bruising all to the lateral side if the incision. Strange! Any idea what could cause this?

You have EDS - I don't have EDS but have a minor form of that type of genetic issue and speak from both research and personal/family experience - All of these disorders can result in scary looking bruising.
I and some family have totally normal "coagulation panel" labs, but (likely due to an inherent weakness in the capillary basement membranes) we are, after even minor physical trauma, subject to a very delayed and very slow leakage of blood, apparent as large painless bruises.

I admit four weeks is more of a delay than I've ever experienced.

If you have no new pain, redness, swelling, or fever, you can try warm moist heat and/or arnica gel to help the bruising resolve faster.

If you are concerned it never hurts to send a photo to your ortho team!!!

I didn’t know about the delayed aspect-thank you!

I just got a copy of my op report. Noted that the surgeon did a lateral release to help with my patellar tilt. Could anyone tell
me how that affects muscle function and recovery? Will also check with my PT.
Thanks!

A technical question: is there a way to title different posts-otherwise it seems like my thread is only about back knee pain.?

I’m sorry, but other than thinking of a title that encompasses your journey better, there’s no options of subtitles. I’ll ask the administrators to be certain, though!

I had a lateral release with my first arthroscopic surgery in 2007. I didn't even know about it until much later and can honestly say that it never interfered with any of my recoveries.
