THR Pain popping out

Sorry to hear about your nice cane breaking, but you're lucky it didn't snap with all your weight on it at an inopportune moment. I can see where you can become attached to a particular cane. I bought a standard adjustable aluminum cane before my operation and had become quite used to it. The other day I left it behind in a grocery cart and only noticed when I got home. Long story short, my son retrieved a cane that had been turned in, but it's an older one with a hard uncomfortable plastic grip instead of the foam one mine had. Maybe someone out there now has a nicer cane. I'd get a new one, but by now I ought to be off it according to many other hippies' accounts here, so I'll "stick" it out for now.

Please don't worry about PT. Hips do sort themselves out. Here's thread from the Library about home PT. Walking and some hamstring stretches work well. I had PT only because I had other issue that were aggravated by my THR.

Thought I would stop by and say hi. Seems like you might need to adopt my signature quote. Take it easy on yourself. It is difficult for sure to have others ahead of your recovery. I see in your thread there are others right where you are in your timeline. Funny how easy it is not NOT focus on them and focus on the people ahead of us. Take it from me who is one of those people who is having things take much longer than anticipated. Try to focus on the present moment, we cause our own suffering by fighting that. Everybody is truly different and every "body" is truly different. May people have done without PT and have done fine. One day at a time. Hang in there kiddo, this too shall pass.

Thanks John, Cathy and Jaycey for your encouragement. Last night I had a breakthrough. I got up off the toilet without hanging onto anything, without even thinking about it. I just stood up! I haven't been able to do that for years. Just beginning to do things normally is so encouraging. One of the most discouraging thing about the deteriorating hip was how I let it restrict my activities. Now I feel as though eventually I'll be able to do most anything I want to. 8 weeks yesterday, BTW.

That is so great and this is the only the beginning. Each day you will find that you can do new things that you were able to do before the joints got into trouble. Take care but keep going forward. Tashia

9 weeks now. The general pain I had been having has mostly gone away but now I'm having a sharp pain at the lowest part of my incision. It feels like a bruise or cut but there is nothing visibly wrong--no swelling, no redness. Just when I walk it's ouch, ouch, ouch. My PT person says she's familiar with this from other patients. Has anyone else had this?

On a different note, a few days ago Hubby and I were relaxing at an overlook at Disney's Kidani Village when a couple joined us. She was in a wheelchair and it turned out that she was going to have a right THR very soon. I was able to be reassuring about the operation and to recommend the Bone Smart forum. She said she'd definitely look. Some things are just meant to be.:egypdance:

I'm 8 weeks now, also have pain around the bottom part of the incision that feels like bruising. No pain when I walk (but then again I'm 50% weight bearing) it just hurts a little to touch. It's also still swollen. I do massage the area twice a day. I thought I was maybe being over-zealous with the massage?

I would not worry about a tender incision area. I am two years post op and my incision area is still tender if pushed on, but otherwise I am not aware of it at all.

Saw my surgeon at 8 weeks. Everything fine except a bit sore at the bottom of my incision.
He said that they had tied a knot for the sutra there just under the skin which is dissolvable.
It had been very itchy and painful to touch. I think it took longer to dissolve because it was so near to the surface.
He said that I shouldn't worry about it.
It is more or less gone now.

Saw my surgeon again today. He said I am healing ahead of schedule, which is nice. I do have pain in my right thigh which he says is from weak muscles and showed me an exercise that will help.

I brought up how I was discharged and then undischarged from the hospital and then forced to go to a nursing home and he got extremely defensive. My husband is deaf and they are claiming he said he couldn't care for me which is nonsense. He's done it twice before when I broke my knee. Everyone is in cover your behind mode and all I want is the truth--and for somebody to pay the $300 I am being charged for my involuntary trip.

I'm having severe discomfort in my right thigh (the operated side). It is a very sharp stabbing pain. I can't sleep on that side and it's been over two months. I did tell the OS about it and he said to do 60 lateral leg raises a day which I've been doing now for about 2 weeks and it's no better. I cut the percocet back to try to restore some normalcy to my digestion. What should I do Josephine or anyone who has any thoughts?

60 a day? That's insane! Have a look at this image and see if you can pinpoint where you are getting this pain. And in the meantime, stop doing all those exercises!

btw, what a you doing for the pain? Medications? Ice? Heat?

Oh my life 60 per day are you training for a marathon ?? I have learned the lots of these people are taught the theory but don't take into consideration we are all so different. Many people on here advised me to not be too obsessed excersises if them made my pain worse and I have to say there is a lot of good advice given out by a lot of very experienced friends.

Josephine, the pain is in R1- 2,3 and sometimes 4. I'm using elevating and medication although probably not enough medication because my innards have been such a mess and cutting back on pain meds helps that. The bottom of the incision is where it starts and then goes down most of the way to the knee on the outside of the leg. I don't use ice because I'm very sensitive to cold and start to shiver uncontrollably when I ice. Thanks for getting back so quickly.

I think you need a different OS. 60 lateral leg raises! Holy mess! (I would have said something else, but autocorrect, you know.) I can't imagine my OS being that cavalier if I were having pain. Is this the one who said anterior approach surgeries were a fad?
Maybe a second opinion? You're not that far from Orlando...just sayin'....

That's the one. You may be right--this is awfully frustrating.

Josephine, did this get to you? I may not have done it right.

Sorry - I've been out earning a living!

I think you have ITB syndrome. Have a look at this article Ilio-tibial (ITB) band information and see if it doesn't match. There are stretches in there too that might help.

You might also have Trochanteric bursitis which also often occurs at the same time.
Josephine, thanks so much. I didn't mean to hurry you. I don't have many of the symptoms of Trochanteric bursitis but he ITB syndrome fits perfectly. I'll start doing some stretching.

The strangest thing happened today. Hubby and I were at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, looking at the giraffes (my favorite) and I felt a strong, sharp pain up and down the outside of my right thigh (the operated side). Then it felt like it was pulling or even bubbling and there was a popping feeling (not a sound) and the pain went away. Just like that. After we had walked for some more a new, much less severe pain developed just above the knee--really just a soreness. I still have a problem when I first stand but I walked without pain for the first time in over a decade! Thank you, thank you, Josephine for your diagnosis of ITB syndrome and the stretching exercises. I've been doing them for days and it has helped so much. I know this isn't the end of pain but it gives me hope. I was pretty despondent after going through the whole THR thing I still hurt so badly, even though it was in the thigh not the hip. I feel so blessed to have this group. No one gets it who hasn't been there. Could someone change my first line from Hip Popping Out to Pain Popping out?
