TKR Pain 2 years after TKR

I'm sorry you had a bad night, Molly. Try to catch some naps during the day.

If your knee is still giving way from time to time, you should still be using a crutch or a walking stick - anything to avoid having a fall.

Hi Celle. I am still using the walking stick. Only using one now but I wouldn't risk not using it.
Have sat with leg elevated and iced all day. Watched dire daytime tv, finished yet another book, knitted more of grandsons jumper and walked the dogs a very short distance. Hubby not going to manage back till Friday so an on line shopping has been done for delivery tomorrow. I spend less going into the supermarket as I keep adding items to my list knowing I can't just pop out for whatever I have missed. Running out of books to read. Think i may need to download some onto my kindle.
This not having anyone to physically talk to is awful. Hubby phones several times a day as does one of my daughters but it's not the same. Lost temper with the dogs for no reason today except they got leads tied up with my stick when out. Oh well I just need to get on with things. No use complaining or moaning. It won't help.
Oh I forgot to mention I still have numb fingers on right hand. That's been more than 4 weeks now. Doctor did say could take 6 weeks to heal.

@Mollymax I had to look up the term, 'jumper". Lol. Over here we call them sweaters. Do you have public libraries over there? I checked out some books before my surgery, and we can renew our library books online three or four times for three weeks each time. I can also reserve books online with our library system, have them sent to my local branch and hubby will go get them. Plus, I can buy books from Amazon, and read books through Amazon Prime, so have more than enough to read. I can't do any sewing yet though.

I forgot about Amazon Prime. I must go look there. I still have a few unread books but some are heavier going and I can only concentrate on the light hearted reading just now. Lol to having to look up jumper. A sweater here is more a hoodie type garment. It's a woollen jumper. Since its for the baby I have the back knitted already.

And here a "jumper" is a dress with no sleeves or collar that you usually wear over a blouse or shirt.

I am an avid reader, but in the first 3 or so months of recovery the only "reading" I could do was audible books. I could be read to, but could not concentrate to read. But that's all back to normal now. I am so happy to be back reading my normal books :yes!:, although I still listen to audible when I can't sleep at night.

:bawl:thought I had got passed the sleepless nights. Guess not then. Its 2am and I just can't sleep. Restless legs tonight and the brain won't switch off. :bored:

Eventually got some sleep but heavy rain woke me up earlier than I would have liked. In a lot of pain with unoperated knee this morning. Was hard taking the dogs out. I think I would be walking so much better if I didn't have this pain. Operated knee still very swollen. Wonder if this will ever go down.

You’re in the dog days of recovery, alas. Feeling better but not nearly better enough. Still swollen. Still some pain. Still not bending as well as you’d like. Not yet up to walking as far as you’d like. It’s a misery to be in this part of recovery... but it does get better. Hang in there and cherish small victories!

I agree. It's the little things. Sometimes so small that you don't notice at the time but look back in a few days/weeks time and realise its not such a problem as it used to be. Eg just having a shower used to be a major logistical task requiring advanced planning so that everything was where it needed to be and when it was needed. Now I just have a shower! No special planning I can just go with the flow as it were.

I think getting awakened by rain right now would be a good thing. Of course, it's been hot as hades here lately so rain would be welcome, especially so for the areas where the fires are burning out of control.

Are you still taking pain meds on a regular schedule? With all the pain you're still having, I think it would be a good idea for a while longer. It's not a bad thing to take the meds if you need them; it's only a bad thing if you need them and don't take them. My knee is still swollen, maybe not as much on the outside as your knee, but it is most definitely swollen a lot inside as it's still quite stiff. I know from experience that it will eventually go down, it just takes a lot of time, and a ton of patience to get through these days. I'm guessing you can't just let the dogs out by themselves where you live? If I had dogs here, I'd be able to just let them out in the backyard for a short time, and forego walking them for a few days. (and let hubby deal with the clean-up too :heehee:)

First requirement for me, and having dogs, was having a fenced in yard, with a back door right out to it. I like taking the dog out, but, sometimes it's too rainy, too cold, too _____, so if I can just open the door...much easier.

@Mollymax, sorry to hear about your 'other knee' pain. Not sure if you mentioned previously that you thought you might need that one replaced at some point as well? Your story kinda reaffirms my decision to go for both at once (realizing that may not work, or be a possibility, for everyone). I'm highly likely to overdo it, no matter what. I think I'd be likely to overdo it even more if I thought I had a 'good leg'.

Take care and hang in there, better days are ahead!

We really needed the rain after weeks of unusually hot weather for Scotland. I can do without the strong winds though.
If I was at home I could just open the back door and let the dogs out but as I am at our static caravan I need to take them out.
I am still taking the painkillers regularly both for the awful pain in my unoperated leg and the minimal pain in operated one. Think I will be on them until the other knee is operated on too whenever that will be. I feel it is holding my recovery up because I am limping on that leg.
I have dozed on and off all day today. The minute I sit down with legs elevated I fell asleep.

Both knees sore tonight. I have been using one stick but wonder if I should go back to 2 as both knees sore. Painkillers taken and hoping I get some sleep tonight. Reading some of the other posts this seems to be around the time others get fed up, down, sore etc.

He asked about the exercises the hospital gave me and said it was important I did them as it was still very swollen
This is completely opposite that what we have found. Doing the exercises makes a person swell more, not less!

Lost temper with the dogs for no reason today except they got leads tied up with my stick when out.
Can you board the dogs until your husband gets back? You are doing way too much and your poor knee hasn't had a chance for the swelling to go down. You aren't doing your knees any good. When your new knee gets better, it will take over a lot of the work and your old one should get better. Mine did.

Hi @Mollymax i was up at 2am last night too so you're not alone ! I've not slept through the night since Jan 20th when i had my TKR ! I think i'm in a new routine now ! My unoperated knee is also giving me some grief as i'm obviously not walking correctly. I try hard but subconsciously i'm compensating for the operated knee i'm sure. I'm slowly getting there though so can't complain. You'll get there too, don't worry x

I would most definitely go back to two "sticks" if it helps. I left my walker in the house in case I found I needed it after I switched to the cane. I haven't yet so it's going back in the garage this weekend. I had planned to send it back to the garage when I went to the cane, but then decided to wait a bit just in case. I almost went to it these past few days, but didn't. It's not going backwards to admit we were't quite as ready to go forward as we thought we were; it's just common sense. I hope you sleep well tonight. :fingersx:

Spoke to hubby tonight and he will be back on Thursday then the dogs are all his again. They didn't get walked today. I just put a lead on them and let them down on to the grass outside. I didn't even cook today. Stuck a prepared meal into the oven. I have really done nothing today.
I just agreed with the doctor about the exercises. Didn't tell him I wasn't doing them. I have read all the items on here about recovery but in general how long did people find it before the swelling went down and you could bend your knee a bit? I am 5 weeks tomorrow and no sign of swelling reducing.
