well I went into hospital on tues 9 am so I thought I wouldn't have opp till afternoon so signed in then a nurse said oh we'll take her from here to Marty ( I thought I would have him with me till opp time ) plus I still thought I wouldn't have opp till afternoon
Then I got taken to cubical got changed (. I had had wash before going in etc) then got taken to pre op room it was about 9.30 by this time then I was told opp at 10.15 then the nurse came in and said have I had some pill helps with clotting so she had to go find my pill had that she said might be an hr delay as I hadn't had the pill anyway They came to get me 10.30 I'm sitting on opp table asking if I could meet surgeon as I had only met his team up till then very nice surgeon put me at ease then aneathesist started to put cannula in my hand put 1in didn't work 2 nd one nurse tried to flush so she's saying don't do spinal untill we know this works so then they put one in the other hand ( by this time I'm feeling not that confident ) also I throw up with GA so I said I would go ahead with spinal coz told you don't throw up sO then he puts in local stung like crazy then spinal whatever that is legs felt huge rolled over put in a catheta. I told surgeon to make sure the sedation I have makes me not hear anything he said he would keep jokes quite then I think this was supposed to make me relax A bit

Ok I woke up from opp great I can't feel my legs but I'm throwing up very bad then they gave me something to stop me vometing didn't work so they gave another thing altogether after 5 times with medication I said no more so after most of the day of not even keeping water down still having drip in I had stopped throwing up slept a bit threw up a bit more then next day I was very quezzy dry retching.
Wed But my leg was great no pain at all I just felt like **** haha
They got me up on the we'd afternoon I went to go for a walk they couldnt detach the drip machine from the bed so I did some stomping one leg after the other used the comode back into bed This is a new Hospital haha xxx
Thurs. I got up a few times to go on the comode but nurses didn't want to walk me to bathroom as I hadn't gone with the physio yet so 2.30 physio came I walked to the door and back by the time I got to the door my left hip was so sore I had RTHR anyway back to bed I had a rest went to get up nurse had pulled up the rail at this stage I had been up 3 times on my own I needed. To have a wee desperately it took the nurse 25 mins to answer bell anyway got there started as im getting out of bed a bit upset i felt like i was being told off like a small child it doesnt make you feel any better as I'm not even 5 ft and even when the beds on its lowest it still was hard for me to get on the bed dr had looked at the wound it seemed to be fine
At 6 pm I'm told I'm being moved to a rehab ward so I get there at least the beds go right down I can sit on the side of the bed and put my feet on the floor I thought at least it's a good start
Fri morning nurse comes in gives speel about this ward you dress during the day walk to lunch room for lunch physio come at least twice a day I'm thinking where am I in the army( remember I had only had 1 walk up till now )
Had to get marty to sort out other clothes as I only had pjs with me physio came got me a walker to use at first still no pain in my leg a bit of cramp at night in the leg from my knee upward got given some excersise fri dr looked at the dressing didn't say to much surgeon came in Sat am (looked at the dressing didn't take dressing off )said I can't go home as he has to put on a suction dressing ok pain in the bum but needs to go on
By now I had worked out my phone which is with a company with not good reception wouldn't work nearly not at all so the phones at your bed was connected to computer screen no you can't call out you can only receive calls internett I could go on bonesmart but I couldn't log on
So all my family and friends except partner are in Perth 400 kl away so that's a bit depressing more so coz you can't call and talk when you needed to I have never been in hospital where you couldn't hire a phone pay credit and top up as need be
Anyway dr came back on sun I have to keep suction dressing on ( you carry a battery the size of half the phone ) with a cord connecting To dressing he said they will put on a normal dressing on mon if ok I can go home tues so normal dressing on on mon am by afternoon weeping dr came in on tues am sorry wound weeping we have to put suction dressing back on ( it's called pico dressing ) so I had dressing back on for 3 days this time drs came between 8-9 everday the nurse didn't change the dressing untill 5-30 so fri surgeon came in I asked if he could look at the wound not just dressing he looked at it and said I'm getting a reaction to the staples. So he wants staples out and a dressing on .so a 24 staples 14 came out very easy 10 were very hard problem was as wound oozed the staples sunk into wound when they took them out of course it's weeping again I thought they would take out healed area and left the rest till tues which is when I'm supposed to have them out so fri night of course dressing got changed coz the top part of dressing is saturate d sat I'm seeing a different dr as mine is away he came at lunch time looked at wound started telling me it's not good weeping to much I got very upset I just wanted to go home no one seems to understand ?? Dr said we will put on a pico dressing do you know what this is I told him I had one on for 2days and one for 3 days anyway he said I cane go home with dressing on nurse looked very surprised I don't know if they let people home with them but he let me home nurse going be very careful very expensive dressing so as long as there's no beeping and flashes green not red I'm here wahoo xxx

I had a good first night home got up walked around my new room (well the frames done its got a roof a glass sliding door 3 windows so I just need walls finishing ) it was so nice I brought in some washing and folded it had a sleep it feels so good to be home it's hard to explain that you need so much to get home I have crutches that I'm using quite well sometimes only one which the physio said is ok but I had a shower at 2 pm and I have a walker they sent home to which I'm so glad I only have a bush shower a frame of wood covered in tin and a canvas bucket you heat up water on the fire then take 1 bucket of cold and 1 of hot water when mixture good you pull up on pulley you have a nozzle like in a normal shower so it's rainwater which is great
The problem is it's very rough terain gravel sticks twigs leaves on the way so it's like 4 wheel driving on the way so the walker works so good were on 40 acres of just trees bush kangaroos possums come to get fed at night and lots of birds also racehorse goanna and bobtails it's beautiful so peaceful
Thank you to everyone who poped in to see how I was going in the next few days I know everything will get less tiring love to all Fiona xxxx

@FiFi congratulations on coming through the ordeal of the hospital. What a mess that was. Sending warm healing hugs to you as you conquer each milestone. You deserve a crown for going through all of that without communication.:wow::tada::yahoo:

Thank you @FiFi for sharing your experience. So many obstacles to conquer… and you did! I loved the detail of the showering process -- and the description of your fascinating & wonderful surroundings. I can see how you are so anxious to be there -- medication surely for body & soul. :loveshwr::loveshwr:

@FiFi, so glad you are home. As for the dressing drill Sargent nurse, I was told in orientation class that patient need to be dressed and up out of bed the first day post surgery! Yikes I remember how I felt the first day post surgery when I had my right hip done.

I smile when I read about your " little tinkle" accident. It is one of my fears. I can not imagine getting on a commode or bedpan straight out of surgery. (No catheter) I fear I will tinkle cause when a lady has to go, she has to go.

Now that you are home and the trauma is behind you the real healing will start.

Sweet FiFi -- you've had such a tough time of it. I'm so sorry for that. However, got to say that I'm thrilled for you that you've been discharged and that you are finally at home. There's nothing like getting back to your very own nest, wouldn't you agree? For me it was just about the best medicine ever and I wish the same for you. Here's hoping the rest of your rehab is totally uneventful -- maybe even boring!!

@FiFi - Aaahh so good to be home sweet home !:yes!:

Now let the real healing begin  . I imagine you below but with the walker wizzing around not the canoe.:kayak:

Congratulations being back home, Fiona @FiFi , and all the patience and the strength you have shown to weather out the pain and discomfort. You've got a beautiful place to live. Happy recovery and brighter days.
Constanze

@FiFi
So glad you are home - reading what you wrote sounds a bit like my experience in hospital, but different. You just needed to be home away from all that silliness, so glad for you but wish you could use my shower just for a week or two. Your setting sounds idyllic so enjoy!
Karen x

Welcome home Princess @FiFi (with your unique throne ;) ) - thank goodness, is all I can say - your hospital experiences sounded horrid and it is amazing how you have kept calm and carried on regardless. And it sounds as though you are managing to be up and out there already, so hopefully the end result is just the same as if you had a better time 'inside'. So great that your room was ready and waiting too - it is getting nippy this side of autumn!

So happy you are home. xxx Jan

How's it all going @FiFi? I expect you are busy flattening your gravel path and beating off the roos with your crutches? I keep thinking of you over there out west, and hoping things are on the improve for you.

hi @FiFi hope you are well and getting back on your feet? 2-3 weeks post hip op is a very tender time so give your self lots of tender loving care before you burst forth! x

Hi everyone I went to the wound clinic yesterday and I didn't need another dressing thank god it's taken so long to get to this stage I have been a bit down slowly getting better everything's been so slow 3 weeks today I'm walking around with 1 cruch inside most of the time but if I use 1 crutch in my left hand I walk a little straighter than the right is this normal ?? I have a walker to go for my long walks which the missy and max the dogs think is great also ninja the cat comes to he's a bit mixed up he thinks he's a dog so I'm trying to go a little further each day or 2 nd day. I'm not taking the fast release pills anymore but martys telling me I should be cutting out day pills I'm on 1 targin morning and night I see the surgeon again tomorrow so I was going to ask him talk later Fiona xxxx

Ohh, @FiFi - take the pills if you need them, I say. I still take panadol during the day, and also sometimes a couple of Ibuprofen at night if I'm feeling stiff or sore. But I think I'm pretty lucky in not having more pain. I'm sure I've seen lots of others posting that they still take stronger painkillers later on in their recovery. I don't think there is a rule when you stop them, it depends on your pain. Harder to get rid of it, once you let it build up.

I think you are right about the crutch - I think if you are using just one crutch, it is supposed to be in the opposite side to your new hip. That is what I was told anyway, and have been doing just that on my walks. I can now manage without any inside, but am a week ahead of you remember. I do the same as you with the long walks - one day a long one, next day, take it easy!

Great news about your wound settling down at last too. Difficult time for you, I'm sure. But I bet the doggies (and dog impersonator feline) are loving getting out with you now.
:doggie:

Who am I to argue with Aunty so I won't just good to see you about. Oh I had a xat same she would walk to heel on my walk to paper shop.

Hi Fifi good to hear from you, up and about!!

My opinion is that it is so much better to take the meds a bit longer than needed than a bit too short. You must be the judge of that. I weaned down and then up again as I felt uncomfortable and it was affecting my ability to do so much. Having said all of this if you feel the meds are having a bad effect on you, can you try an alternative?

Good luck .... and look forward to a few weeks time when you will be so much fitter. This recovery time is challenging for some of us but it does soon become history!

x

@FiFi sounds like you have progressed --using crutches now -- inspite of your troubles. Most recently my pain meds needs go from one day it's rough going and the next it's not bad for a long stretch. I was panicking yesterday if Id get my prescription before the weekend or run out, and today it's pretty good. I guess we know best on how we feel. Time for one now before OC visit in 30 min. Good timing!
