THR On road to recovery

pjm I am pain free right now. Sometimes a little pulling sensation near my incision. I've been off pain meds for about 1 and 1/2 weeks, if I'm uncomfortable from PT I will try a Tylenol or naproxen. I go to out patient 3 times a week. I am getting stronger. Still using he cane but can walk gimpy style, although tiring. I'm worried that if I walk without the cane, gimping around, I will not get rid of the gimp! The chair part is the hard part if you have the hip restrictions. I have a recliner I use but my husband also but leg risers on my couch so that I can sit there and even lie on the couch! In bed, I used meant meant pillows at the beginning! I still do. I can't seem to find the perfect pillow for between my legs. I have had no calf pain or numbness. I was told to notify the OS of calf discomfort! I'm happy to talk about my recovery any time!

Possibly this is not the best time to kick the Ambion out of your life. You really need a full nights rest right now. I'm glad you were able to sleep last night. Do you think you feel better today because you got a good night's sleep?

I watched an anterior THR but I couldn't find a posterior video. It would be so interesting to see what was actually done! I guess I'm strange but I love watching medical things like that. There used to be a show back in the seventies that showed actual open heart surgeries and other operations. I never missed it! Funny thing is I HATE horror movies with any gore at all.

Yes I feel much better today because of getting my first good nights sleep in a while! I went out with Jackie for a little and I noticed that I do not have walking endurance. I think I'm going to an inside mall tomorrow and practice my walking. At least there I can sit every little bit on a bench if I need to!

I do not know what procedure I was watching. I thought it was a posterior because the cur seemed similar to mine and the patient was on his side. I thought anterior was done in done on some sort of special table!

I might try watching it again I only hope it does not hinder me in having the other hip done!

One thing I just cannot get over is how EASY it is to get that leg on the bed or couch'! I used to have to manually lift it up because of he pain and the minimal range of motion I had!! I can flip this leg anywhere I want and NO PAIN!!! Truly amazing!!!

That is the same kind of feelings I am having. Wow! I can do this or that now! Today I cleaned my bathrooms, got down on the floors and scrubbed them good. After I started I realized my hip was not making those awful snap crackle poping sounds. Also I can reach my left foot. If this keeps up I will be able to do my own pedicures!
After last years surgery I was hurrying from one part of the house to another when my husband jumped up with a panicked look saying, "What's wrong!". He had not seen me go faster than a hobble for a very long time.
Do you have any good walking malls near you? It seems to me that just plain walking does more good than anything to help recovery. The weather here has been so lousy I haven't been walking like I should. Tomorrow I plan to go to the pool before work for the first time.
Hope you enjoy your walk tomorrow!

Wow! You have been energized! I have not touched my left foot in about 3 years! I hope I can put my socks on without the sock device! I'm still under hip restrictions, though I must admit, I have not been as careful! I can't wait to "test the waters" with my new hip! I live near a big mall, so that's going to be my target tomorrow (weather permitting). Hopefully I won't be too tired after PT. it's smack dab in the middle of the day 12:15!
I have to improve my walking stamina!

You are so energetic! What time do you start work! I could never do anything before work!

Have a good day tomorrow!
Mary

After listening to you guys, I can't wait! I have not been able to do my toenails for about a yr. Hope tomorrow brings me good news at the PT.

7 weeks post op. Still going for PT. Still using a cane? Can walk like a penguin without the cane! Can dress and shower and cook and clean! Can drive! Can lift my leg onto the bed or couch without ANY hip pain! Can go carefully up and down stairs. Can walk with a pain free hip....even penguin style.

However, now the decision comes to what to do next. I see OS on March 12 and cannot wait. I am anxious to get rid of more pain. I am bone on bone with both knees, and my other hip is ready for a replacement as well ( extremely thin line of carthalidge). I'm worried because my left hip went downhill so so fast, that it made my knee pain minimal. I was thinking of having a knee done in the summer, but now I'm thinking about the other hip. That groin pain is starting....infrequently...but it is there! It brings tears to my eyes when it happens...like a tendon is getting hung up on something. Although my knees hurt as well. When I get injections in the knees, to helps for a couple of months. Injections did nothing for my hip.

Who else out there has needed 2 knees and 2 hips? What order did you do it?

Any suggestions? Should I see what the doctor suggests?

Hip [Bonesmart.org] On road to recovery or Knee [Bonesmart.org] On road to recovery ? Well, of course, you want to discuss this with your OS. But, for what it's worth if the decision were mine, I would get my other hip done first. Knees take so much longer to recover from. And I think you need for your hips to be in good shape to be able to have the best possible recovery from knee replacement. I would never have been able to get through the knee replacements if I hadn't had my hip done first. And it appears that hips frequently get much worse very rapidly. Lot to think about---tough decision, but you'll get if figured out.

Take care of yourself and keep us posted. We care. [Bonesmart.org] On road to recovery

Hi folks - can I butt in on all you youngsters (50 somethings!) who want to build up your walking stamina so quickly after your op date?
Firstly, you will be still healing inside - just 'cos that incision is closed don't think everything is mended! Have a read of the library stuff and you will see what I mean.
Secondly, how long did it take to get into your pre-op state? I know I have not done a decent walk across the North Kent marshes (Charles Dickens country - think Great Expectations) for a couple of years now because my hip was getting progressively more painful and I was reluctant to admit that it was affecting my life. My family used to call me "Marine" because I was charging ahead of everyone else, oh boy, did that change! No wonder I wore the hip out.
I've started to do short walks again, but only on the roads and with my mobile (cell phone) in my pocket for emergencies. Just remember, you have to get home as well! 15 mins out and back, half an hour is my limit without paying the next day. When that gets easy I'll go up to 20 mins each way and so on.
I went very anaemic and needed 4 units of blood after my operation, my surgeon couldn't understand why as I hadn't lost much in the op, but that also affected my stamina. I also had to take iron tablets when I got home for weeks until my blood tests were better.
Anyway, I know we all want to be fit and healthy NOW but patience is a virtue and that's what we also need (my hubbie will laugh if he reads that - I am the worst!).
Anyway, lecture over - sometimes I can't get out of teacher mode - so just keep plugging away, think how far you have come already and look to the future. The bionic women are on the march!
Best wishes Anne

Wise words Nannyannie.Thank you

!Nannyannie Thanks ....I did watch a surgery video, so I understand a little better what my body went through. Bu the way, I am a teacher!!! Need to get back to my school

Great words for us all to adhere to! I went to the PT today and don't have to go back for two weeks. They were really pleased with what I was doing and added one more excerise to the list. Ya.....!
I'm in the same boat.....always charging ahead and leading the way. Its hard to pull back and be stoppd in your tracks. PT wants me to stay on the cruches until 6 weeks post op but I can do some little things around the house but not much. Really wants me to let the hip heal as much as possible before letting the cruches go.

That's what everyone here has been saying. I guess we just want to be better quicker..not realizing what was done inside our hip and leg!!!

I stand corrected...I am 6 week post op!!!!!

Mary are you planning on asking your OS about the knee or hip decision when you see him on the 12 th? Just over a week to go! Before I saw mine last time I had a page full of questions written down. There is no way I would have remembered everything without the list!

Glad you found your cell phone, That would have sent me back to the car, too. Amazing how we can't be without them any more. When we were teens a phone you could keep in your purse seemed like sci-fi! Hopefully you will have better luck with your walk next time. Malls are fun, people watching is so entertaining.

Was the video you ended up watching a posterior approach? If so would you let me know where you found it? Don't know why I can only find anterior approach videos.

Got something to help me sleep for a couple of weeks and looking forward to actually sleeping tonight.
I actually walked around a bit today with just one crutch. I only did this in areas that I had something to hold to if I needed it. I was surprised that I could do it so easily. Looking forward to a better day tomorrow!

I had PT yesterday and they had me do balancing exercises. When I stood on my operated leg, it was a little shaky, and I had to sometimes hold onto the bar, but it was not too bad. HOWEVER, when I put that operated leg down, it really really hurt! She said sometimes that happens and it is from the back muscles. Should this exercise hurt that much! I had to take pain meds last night and ice a few times.

Going to see my OS on Tuesday for my 6 week post op. Can I have suggestions on what to ask the doctor? I do not want to forget anything.

Good luck with the OS visit. I can't wait till my time rolls around the first of April.
