Oh @yiayia3 - what a naughty dog! So sorry you fell like that - but glad that it sounds as though it will be a bruised posterior for you, rather than bruised knees. These knees themselves are pretty indestructible but what's round them is quite sensitive - so do take care. Glad the yukky root canal went OK and hope the antibiotics etc have not upset your tummy too much.
Thanks for your kind words and those of @Ellejay - its a long slog but I'm getting there - thanks to all you and all my other friends on here, spurring me on ... (don't know what I would do without you!)

Hi @dogwheels I'm so glad to read that things are getting a bit more normal for you now. You've worked so hard to get back to where you were and I'm so pleased for you. I laughed about cute little Gilbert and his Chocolate Complan. Ahh bless him. The picture was lovely. Did your physio suggest hamstring stretches. I have to do some simple ones every day. They are helping, definitely. Like you my knee/leg had become set in such a position that the muscles shortened. When. I get the pain in my muscle when Freddy is doing the massage on my leg, that when he does the acupuncture and that removes the pain after a few minutes and he continues.

Lovely to catch up with you take care love Nana moon 27 xoxoxoxoxoxo

Hi @Nana moon 27 ; @yiayia3 ; @Ellejay @DogLoverx3 and everyone else that has kept me sane and happy over the last few weeks. Excuse the novel that follows, but as I have said before, I find it useful to use my thread as a diary to chart my progress .....
Its been a weird week knee-wise. After a very tortuous massage on Monday, when I showered on Tuesday my leg felt decidedly odd in the shower - a bit like when you feel you have put something 'out of joint'. It was not my knee joint, thank goodness, the feeling was at the side and so I rubbed and squeezed and it felt a bit better but still exceedingly peculiar. I got dry and got on the bed to do my scar massage and I must confess the thought crossed my mind 'What if this causes my knee to stiffen again?' - but I got up on the bed and bent my knee and it responded really well and seemed bendier. I was so frantic that it may sieze up, that I spent the whole day doing a few bends every half hour or so. It hurt a bit now and again when I walked, but it seemed to be much easier. Husband caught me doing lunges on the stairs and shouted at me. He said he reckoned scar tissue or something had given and had freed things up a bit and that doing exercises that put weight through my knee was daft. I shouted back that he may be a Doctor (he has a PhD) but he was not a medical doctor ...... then I calmed down and thought that perhaps he may have a point (turns out he did as my physio agreed with him). Anyway, I took some of the magic diclofenac that the OS gave me, cos I reckoned if something had loosened I didn't want it to swell when I exercised it - and it all seemed a bit looser ... hooray! The down side was that different bits of my leg kept hurting when I walked - first my hamstring, then my quads, then my calf ....... I couldn't wait to get to physio to try and discover what was going on.
She reckons something has given or settled or something and this has freed up my knee a bit and has also caused a lot of dormant muscles etc to be used again, hence the odd aches. No great gain in ROM, but as soon as I got on the couch today (Thursday) I bent my knee very easily straight into my best 'score' from Monday and put another 8 degrees on during the session. Yay for me!
The massage was VERY firm and extremely painful - but lo and behold evidently a fresh crop of bruising has emerged behind my knee in the last 3 days (not from her massage - ha ha!) which she thinks may be as a result of the bleed that bunged everything up. A combination of it slowly dispersing and me using the knee more is making it shift.
She says she wishes she could see inside my knee as she'd love to see what was going on - huh, wouldn't we all? And I was a bit miffed when she stated that she was not surprised that I did not have a regular textbook recovery given the trauma and long term problem with my knee. I just wish somebody could have warned me from the outset that a few hiccups were a possibility - I would have been a lot happier, more patient and less panicky.
I am still a little worried that all the pain when I 'stretch the bend' is around the site of the other large scar on my knee - but there's little I can do about that. I just refuse to push it too much.
She tells me we are going to take things very slowly and gently - bending and bike wheels only until next session. The plan is to increase the bend to a reasonable amount and only work on bending, then let the bend stabilise and only after that start strengthening.
I have about 4 weeks before I have my X rays and see my OS again - ostensibly to be discharged from his care. It will be interesting to see if I have made up for lost time by then, and also if with hindsight he can explain further, what happened and why.

Hello Dogwheels - Chris, hope that's ok, the use of login names for people is not settled in, as yet! I left your journal as last of the coffee clutch since I had intuited a really strong start for recovery and then a set back. As a Texan it takes a lot to scare me but I must admit, " I was a-skarit!" Total lie, I'm from California, transplanted in Texas but the scared to the bones part is real! What a miscarriage of Justice to have done all the right things and see early success and be derailed by...what?! Nothing anyone can pinpoint, uber unfair...and a pre-ops worst fear.

I must say, you've dealt with your setback with an amazing amount of grace. I, I fear, would be railing at whatever God might want to listen as to the unfairness of it all. I congratulate you for your strength and hope that this is the last corner you need to turn back to full knee function. All the best!

Hello @TexasTee - thanks for your lovely message. It was the first I read when I woke up this morning and put a big smile on my face to start the day.
I know its easy to say, but don't worry - I am sure that what happened to me was just an unfortunate fluke, and unlikely to happen to others. The very fact that it has all the physio team baffled (as they have discussed it to try and pool info) and my OS could only give an informed guess, just goes to show that it is far from normal. I do think my physio was right yesterday that as my knee was such a mess pre-op and had been for so long - a non-standard recovery may have been anticipated. I just wish that I had been forewarned of the possibility and then I would have been a little more prepared.
Without a doubt being able to come on here within minutes and getting advice and support really quickly, along with chatting to friends who have been constantly upbeat and encouraging - helped enormously. You are already 'getting your feet under the table' on this forum and making friends, and we will be here for you every step of the way, as you decide, prepare and finally join the TKR Fraternity!

Take care

Hi Chris,
What a strange knee story, it all sounds a bit worrying for you as it all unfolded, but I'm glad none of the professionals were concerned and all is well. That is great news on the new bend, keep it up!
It's my first day home after two wonderful breaks and I managed a trip to the pool early this morning, before all the children were there. I managed all of the hydro exercises -thank you - but must have looked a strange sight battling to put the arm bands on my feet! Each time before it has just been me and the PT in a private pool, and she has put them on for me, it's a different story trying to roll them on in a public place :heehee:. Afterwards I went into the spa area, the jacuzzi was wonderful, I positioned my knee by one of those really strong jets - great.
I then came home and had a session on my exercise bike, I was able to use it on a lower seat height so perhaps my ROM has improved. I won't try my proper bike just yet, I don't want to be disappointed again. As a consequence of all this activity I am now elevating and icing, something I haven't done for a while because of days out whilst away, it will do me good.
I am looking after my grandson from 7 am tomorrow morning, so I don't think I will get much chance of resting, exercising or anything else. He is with us until Tuesday evening, and then we go away again on Thursday so I'm giving my knee a day to itself today, I don't think it will get much care or attention until after Easter now.
Have a good weekend, xx Lyn

Hi Lyn - hope your knee enjoys its 'quality time' today - I don't suppose you will get much chance to rest when your grandson is there - but from what you have said, that will not bother you one bit and you will all be having a great time together. I hope you have a lovely few days enjoying your time with him.
Great that you can move your bike a notch lower, you will be back on your road bike in no time, I'm sure.
My apologies, but I did a little laugh to myself imagining you trying to fix an arm band on your foot in the pool - but well done you! I don't think I could manage that on my own. I have yet another hydro on Monday. I am trying to fit physio/hydro sessions around the Bank Holiday weekend to keep the continuity going.
My knee seems to be improving slowly, but at least it is improving. As no one has experienced anything like it before, there is no point trying to put timescales on it, it will sort itself out when it is ready. Frustrating, but that's the way it is. I also contorted myself - not with an arm band but with a hand mirror this morning, and sure enough another line of black bruising is appearing in the crease behind my knee. I remember you commenting a while back that it was late for me to still have black bruising behind my knee. Something was/is not very happy there, that's for sure. Still, as my old Nan used to say 'better out than in!'.
All is peaceful here, as husband has gone down for the weekend to jet spray the boats and our balconies and then race on Sunday. Just need some lovely hot weather and that is where I'll be - soaking up the sun. Although I think I may need to buy a recliner style sun chair - rather than the low sun loungers that we have. It's all a bit of a faff - having to adapt to this knee. Before I just swore at it because it didn't work, got on with things and put up with it when it hurt - I am so much more aware of the new knee. I trust it physically, but it needs to gain my mental trust again, as I am acutely aware of any changes, worried that they may be the start of further setbacks. But all things considered - that's not exactly surprising! I am looking forward to the day when I can just get on with things and if it hurts a bit, just carry on contentedly, safe in the knowledge that it will calm down, sort itself out and be fine again.
Have a great weekend, have lots of fun, and don't forget to post some pictures!
Love ChrisX

Hello @dogwheels - I'd say good morning but I think you're long past that time already! I thought of you this AM - have you tried Arnica Gel for you bruising? I've been using it for my hip bursitis and it seems to be helping. Certainly can't hurt!

It's afternoon tea time here @TexasTee - and I am just about to make a cup of Camomile ...
That's a good idea, I hadn't thought of Arnica. I've just found some on Amazon in a hand pump bottle that looks pretty good, so I think I will get it. The reviews say it is good for general and arthritic aches as well as bruising, so given that a different bit of my leg seems to take it in turns to ache each day I could just rub it all over!
Time to charge up my laptop and then a spot of retail therapy I think. By the way - that's another warning for you pre-op ....... post TKR boredom can prove exceptionally hard on the 'plastic' if you enjoy online shopping.
Enjoy your Saturday.
X

Hi @dogwheels - thank god for online shopping! As I had my tkr dec 9th it was awesome for Christmas. I loved getting deliveries almost every day too. Your right everyone having a tkr should be warned! I am at our camper in South Jersey opening it up for the season. It is a gorgeous day but I have already done more work than I have since my surgery. Relaxing now for a bit before I tackle one of the bedrooms.

Hugs to Gilbert. He is so cute. I am glad you are slowly improving and hope the rest of your weekend is great!

Hi @dogwheels how is your lovely chill out day going? I hope that Gilbert is being a good boy he really is such a sweetie. The retail therapy sounds lovely fun and I hope you bag some bargains too. There are plenty out there right now. I'm longing to know what you treat yourself to! Catch you in a bit. Love Nana moon 27 x

Ooh forgot to tell you that my appointment has come through to see the surgeon who did my op. I never met him once, he was a stand in. So I'm going to a different hospital With not such a good reputation as the previous one, but that is irrelevant really, on May 6th at the rehabilitation unit. It mill be nice to try and find out why I'm having such pun and trouble with extension of my knee/leg.

Hi @Jozilla - your camper sounds great and glad the weather is good for you. It's a bit grey here in London. Husband has gone down to our other house to do some jet spraying on the outside stairs and balconies. It's on a marina so we get a lot of salt, algae and seagull excrement!! That's what he says he is doing, but in truth he is probably playing on the boat .....
As for the online shopping, I realised my mistake post TKR when I discovered I couldn't get to the door so quickly to intercept deliveries before my husband got there. I'm now a bit sneakier and order a few small bits for him now and again to detract from my purchases!
Enjoy your weekend and don't overdo.

Ooh @Jozilla I bet you're loving opening up the van. The start of the season I always find so exciting. I enjoy getting everything ready for the holidays! By the way I really do like your avatar pic x x x

Hope the Arnica helps - and yes, I got it for the hip but added it to both knees on day 2 - if any of my other parts go on strike I'll just slather it on head to toe!

Ahh - I'm afraid I'm already an online shopper but it's ok here - my husband has something delivered nearly daily so I'd be hard pressed to beat him at it! But I'm happy to give it a shot...

Hope you are enjoying Gilbert - my Chloe bear has had a rough week on and off food and this morning she started to vomit. I had to take her to the vet - she hates going so I do it as rarely as possible but x-ray shows an impass in her large intestine. She eats raw food and had been gifted with a cow knee - normally she just chews on the bone, this time she annihilated it - ate the whole thing and it made it most of the way out but got stuck. She'll have to stay the night with an IV and an enema...yikes, poor thing. So extra snuggles with Gilbert and remind him not to be a greedy guy!

Hi @Nana moon 27 @TexasTee @Jozilla @Ellejay and anyone else having a read .........
@Ellejay's day with her grandson made me tired just reading it! At least my day with my daughter's fur baby was not as fraught. Old Gilbert and I have just been chilling out today - poor old boy is looking decidedly geriatric and I was so glad to have him here with me as I don't know how much longer he will be around. He's lost weight and is a bit wheezy, but he was as good as gold and sat on my lap for the whole of 'Britain's Got Talent' washing himself (and my hand) enjoying lots of stroking and bruxing like crazy.(For the uninitiated rats brux when they are happy and content, they sort of grind their jaws together which you can hear and their eyeballs wobble - it sounds just as weird as it is!). He's had scrambled egg and peas, a bit of yoghurt, 2 slivers of my apple and a puppy Bonio biscuit.

@Nana moon 27 - sorry not to have replied earlier. I am really glad that you have an appointment sorted with your OS.
I have already bought 4 dresses that are lovely. I originally bought 3 but liked the one in lilac linen so much that I ordered it in black as well (I can never have enough black I'm afraid). 2 tops and a pair of white linen narrow leg trousers (I look ridiculous in the wide flappy linen ones as I am not tall or thin enough), a pair of shoes the same as a pair I already have but in black (surprise!) and 2 pairs of earrings. Ooo-er it does seem quite a lot when I list it like that. I was busy putting things in in my basket on eBay this afternoon, as I buy quite a few things from Germany. Having read my list, perhaps I had better delete them ..... but they were so nice, so perhaps I won't!

My neighbour called to collect a parcel we had taken in for her. She knew something was up with my leg but didn't know what .... I explained and it turned out her mother has just had her hip done. Neighbour wasn't worried about her Mum, more about her dog 'Abelard' who is a very naughty French Basset (actually a Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen). Poor thing had a fissure in a bone in his leg which has had to be pinned. She was busy telling me about a special therapeutic animal blanket with ceramic beads that promotes healing. Abelard has one, her Mum now has one, and she thinks I should get one too! What with my knee, Gilbert's hind leg and Abelard's leg - we are all in the wars! Perhaps I should try the vet instead?

Hope Chloe is much better tomorrow @TexasTee - poor thing, hopefully she won't do that again in a hurry.

Night night all, it is very late as I got waylaid after starting this, but wanted to finish it - so sleep well.

X (and a whiskery X from Gilbert!)

Hi @dogwheels the dresses you ordered sound nice and I agree with you about white linen flappy trousers. You need to be either over 5ft 6" tall with long legs or a size 8/10. They look awful on me, worse still I'd love to wear them, and also they can be very see through. They make me look short and dumpy. As for the shoes, once you find a pair that are comfy and suit, then it makes sense to get another pair in another colour.

It sounds like Gilbert was a good boy. I'd never heard of bruxing before. That's really sweet a bit like a cats purr I guess! I'm glad he enjoyed his dinner. That blanket sounds very interesting.

I just watched BGT on catch up and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's cheered me up to be honest. I've been really fed up again I'm afraid. It's nice to watch something so entertaining. I loved that robotic light dancing it was amazing. I started to watch Crimson Fields last Sunday night and quite enjoyed that. Come back Mr Selfridge please!!!

Anyway give little Gilbert a stroke and a fuss off me. He sounds so loveable. I could picture him sat on your lap happy as can be. Night night. Speak soon x x x

Apparently those wide leg linen pants are for no one - I'm 5'10 and a 4/6 and I look stupid in them, too!

Chloe is still at the vet - after 3 enemas she told them she was done with that and when an English mastiff is done with something, it's pretty much done. They are going to sedate her and try it that way - sometime this AM...I hate waiting. Too funny about Gilberts meal - that sounds like what Chloe's welcome back to food meal will be!

Hi @TexasTee Maybe we should ban wide legged linen trousers. If you can't wear them then no one can. What a dream to be that weight and height!

I'm sorry Chloe's not well poor thing. Enemas yuk! I feel sorry for her. Yes, I think sedation will be kinder for her although I hate seeing sedated dogs. It scares me that's why. I have a real weakness for our furry friends whatever they may be.

Love Nana moon 27 xoxoxoxox

Hi @dogwheels

Has Gilbert gone home yet? Is hubby back? I've been to mom and dad's tonight, with my eldest daughter. It was a nightmare because of my brothers kids rudeness. Not so much the boy as the girl. We left early in disgust, using an excuse to go.

How are you feeling?

Love Nana moon 27 xoxoxo
