[Bonesmart.org] New Year, New Knee - Jan. 3, 2017<

I know everyone is different, but I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight to how long a person is typically on Percocet - because on Fri. when the Dr. gave me more meds, he wanted me to wean off the Percocet once my pain was under control. He only prescribed 20 of the 10 mg. Percocet and 25 of the 5 mg. Percocet. I finished the 10 mg. and have been taking 2 - 5 mg. every 4 hours. It seems too early to take 1 of those away, but I thought maybe a couple times a day especially when the Tramadol is near. Not sure. But I do know the Percocet are dwindling.

When the dr. finally prescribed me additional pain medications, in addition to the 2 - 5 mg. of Percocet, he placed me on
300 mg. Gabapentin 2 x per day
50 mg. Tramadol every 6 hours (although we've been doing every 8 hours because the Tramadol keeps falling on the same time as Percocet and he said NOT to take them at the same time),
75 mg. Indomethacin ER 2 x per day
25 mg. Hydroxyzine Pamoate 2 x per day

Thanks!! Otherwise, I've been sleeping well and eating well. Icing continuously, elevating

@jaschembra
Wow, glad you had a smooth surgery but I'm hoping you get these meds squared away soon!
I do understand caution regarding over medicating patients but it also seems like it goes too far in certain situations.
My fingers are crossed for you!

@jaschembra
Julie, my surgeon was only allowed to prescribe the heavy-duty medications for 2 weeks, but then he prescribed the Tramadol and Tylenol regime that Josephine recommends. It controlled my pain very successfully.

I've emailed my OS and plan on calling them in the a.m. We are spreading out the Percocet to 6 hour and plan on reducing the 2 pills to 1 while increasing the Tramadol. However I only have 5 Percocet pills available after tomorrow. How quickly can you cut them down in order to stop - that's one of my questions for him. The entire quantity that he prescribed was 45 Percocet. 20@ 10 mg and 25@ 5 mg.

Good to know @Celle

Just to chime in, I'm taking Norco, but even my OS prescribed 90 pills. At my 2.5 week follow up, he wrote me a script for 60 more. Even with my mostly taking 1 (occasionally 2)every 6 hrs, they go quickly.

On a separate note, and with my husband being a physician, I can say that there is a HUGE push by the AMA and other entities for physicians to prescribe fewer opiate mediations... as a response to the heroin epidemic. So perhaps your OS is trying to adhere to the new guidelines.

Still TKR, I would think would be an exception. Much more difficult surgery than most.

Thanks @L.I.T and @mbrown Yes, that heroin epidemic is really bad here in MO. I will say my night had no change after spacing out the Percocet and increasing the Tramadol. I am so glad I am sleeping from drug alarm to drug alarm right now.

@mbrown this morning I had one of those jerk your whole body awake deals like you've described- not sure I was dreaming of falling or if the body just jerked everywhere lol.

I hope you are able to get the sufficient meds to keep your pain under control. I had to get refills of my original painkillers (original prescription only covered 2 weeks), but my refill was way more than I ended up needing.

I was on OxyContin 10 mg (extended release - 10 hours) and Percocet 5 mg (4 hours) through the first part of week 3. During late week 3 and early week 4, I still needed the extended release, stronger pill first thing in the morning and before bed, but started taking the Percocet less frequently - usually 1 mid morning and 1 late afternoon/early evening. Towards the end of week 4, I stopped taking the OxyContin, and took 1 Percocet mid morning and 1 before bed. By the start of week 5, I was completely off of all prescription pain killers.

OS emailed back, he hopes we will be able to have me off the Percocet by the end of the week. He will have a Rx ready for my hubby to pick up. This sounds much better!!

The PT comes today so I am only walking a lap inside when I take a bathroom break. Doing my ankle pumps. And staying elevated and iced. I'm ready to make sure she doesn't hurt me. Her arrival falls nearing the time for drugs, so I won't be masked :)
On Thursday when she was here, I made sure to tell her not to touch me when she measured, but to let me do it on my own! I won't take any of that pushing.

I wish I had a good response to your question, but I was only prescribed Oxycodone 5/325 (qty 90) Celebrex 200mg and Aspirin. I didn't get anything else like Gabapentin, Tramadol or Hydroxyzine Pamoate

give me some insight to how long a person is typically on Percocet
To be honest, that's what I tend to call a "how long is a piece of string" question! There's no answer I can usefully give you because in the end you have to work it out for yourself. It all depends on your own experience of pain and what it takes to control it. But all I can say is that if whatever you are taking is managing your pain then that's good.

As a personal experience story, with my first knee I was taking 100/50mg Tramadol and 1,000mg paracetamol (Tylenol) 3 or 4 times a day until I was about 4½ months out. But for my second knee, which seemed much easier all round, it was only for about 8 weeks. Go figure! :shrug:

Thanks for the information on the Percocet. My OS would like me to be tapered off in another week and I would hope so too. Then I would be on Tramadol and Tylenol. He gave me 30 additional Percocet today. Im still in the dark days of healing and shouldn't even be having to think of these things, but since I've had to fight for all of my pain meds it just is what it is.

Now, on to the PT. When she comes in on Wed. We will be having a serious talk before starting. I will tell her the extreme pain that I have had this evening! Enough that it is shutting me down for the evening - only walks to the bathroom through tomorrow. She was very happy with where I was, but on one occasion she pushed gently down on my knee for the extension measurement of 7. When I was doing the heel slides, she tried to push and I told her no, I will do it myself. She measured 82 on those. She did 3 standing exercises that were new to me... but anyway, I am really hurting tonight. We also cut my Percocet to 1 1/2 today so we may go back to 2 for tonight's pain relief.

I'm wondering sometimes if I'm not hurting worse due to my cementless implant... He did tell me that down the road I shouldn't be discouraged if the seniors were doing laps around me at PT because I would "ache" longer.

My sister is doing a great job taking care of me. My husband stopped by today on his way home from work - he had picked up the script for us. He said tonight that he made the mistake of saying Mommy to our dog and she went all over the house looking for me lol.

It's amazing how much our pets miss us when we're gone. And I firmly believe they know when we are hurting, both physically and emotionally.
Did your OS explain why the cementless implant would ache longer? I have no idea if I have cement or not. I think in the long run that cementless would be much better because of no chance of the cement flaking off inside the joint.

Hi Julie. I am glad to see that you are doing well. I hope you can get the meds situation straightened out. I have had a few of those jerk your whole body awake episodes, too. Once I nearly panicked, because I thought I was falling out of the bed. lol I don't know about the time frame for needing Percocet, but I would want the option for taking it for a few more weeks if it were me.

Thanks @Ronsgirl I hope to be able to cut down on the Percocet by the weekend like the dr. would like. I would hope to have some left for any painful days in my future. Then, Tramadol. I have norco from him as well, but that has given me headaches in the past. I'm going to come over onto your thread. How are you doing with your left?

Here's to another day behind us! Still very grateful to be sleeping at night.
