oh goodness just had a massive meltdown and sobbed, I am thinking this has been a big mistake, possible infection, quad still not working, I have made no progress since I had it done. I am feeling fed up
TKR 16th July 2014

@vallee You poor thing! It takes a while for the leg muscles to start working again. Sometime up to 3 weeks, I think hubby's was at about a week and a half and just out of blue he could lift it. You are so very early in the recovery! It was just about were you are at now my husband was questioning if he had made a mistake, but after a few weeks he was very glad he had it done. Is the infection in the knee or incision? There are many people on here that have dealt with infections and have came through it. Hang in there it will get better, remember depression is common with this recovery and it too will pass.

@vallee, take a deep, deep breath; try to relax; and remember that you are ONLY 12 days post op. You are just starting a recovery that will take a full year to be completed; and, bless you, you are having quad lag and a possible infection on top of that. The antibiotics should take care of the infection and quad lag resolves itself in time. So try your best to get your chin up off the ground and find as many positives as you can to dwell on. The more positive you are the better you will feel and the better your recovery will be.

Please read all the articles skigirl left you---the info there will help you understand the length of this recovery and the things you can do to make it easier on you and your knee. And know that you are NOT alone----we are here for you 24/7 and will do all we can to help you get through this.

Be sure you are taking your pain meds on a schedule; that you are elevating (toes above nose); that you are icing and icing and icing some more; and that you are getting lots of rest. You and your knee have undergone considerable trauma and need time to heal. Keep any exercising to a minimum and never allow it to be painful.

Take care and keep us posted. We care.

It is okay to have a meltdown. This is a tough recovery. Things will improve so hang in there. If you need to vent that's okay - we are here to listen and help!

@bottomshollow and @Jozilla thank you so much for the support feeling more positive this morning thank goodness, I have to say this is such a rollercoaster recovery I knew it would be tough but I don't think anything prepares you for the emotional side of things. onwards and upwards thanks guys x

Great feeling getting the clips out! You are on your way!!

so here I am 2 weeks post op just been to see the physio and although not earth shattering fantastic I am quite happy that I have improved, my bend has gone up from 40 to 70 due to the knee being very swollen I just couldn't take it back any further. again she never touched my knee and was so positive and encouraging, I am going to have the other clips out tomorrow so moving forward with baby steps

@vallee glad the infection seems to be controlled. Don't worry about ROM, when you get the swelling controlled (elevate and ice) it will improve a lot. You will feel so much better with the staples out. Have a great evening!

so had the rest of my clips out yesterday, what a nightmare in total I had 50 clips, the last 26 came out yesterday which was day 16 and oh my word I must be such a baby but it was agony some has embedded in the wound and they couldn't get them out, I am meant to be having another TKR but honestly I cannot go through that again. so they are now worried my wound may come apart so got 20 strips holding it together at the moment and have been told not to bend to much. 'is this normal' honestly the rollercoaster of this recovery is unbelievable, constipation, pain, panic and fear.
so today got up with a positive attitude had 2 little walks and did some exercises to stretch the leg so the knee can straighten feeling good tonight

@vallee Hubby's was stitches not staples, much better for him. Some people have no pain with staple removal, I think it depends on how experienced the person taking them out is.

well another day today had a nice little trip out to a garden centre, first trip since op not going to a medical appt. it was so nice to be normal. stayed and had a cuppa there and iced and elevated upon return as it did swell up but joy of joy got in the car independently yay hay so chuffed as my quad still is not working
happy days

@vallee Some people still have problems lifting the leg up to the 3rd week, and then it will take time for the strength to come back. Hang in there and keep trying! At just shy of 10 weeks hubby's leg still swells some if he is on it too long. That too takes time!

:angel:Vallee....reading your posts. Im having BTKR on August 13th. I knoooooow, it's going to be rough, I anticipate rough. I want it over, after one time. God Bless you and I pray you will be healing and feeling better very very soon......Kim

Hi @KElmore good luck with your surgery, like you I anticipated pain, sleeplessness and frustration but to be fair I have been very lucky with the first 2 I really don't think I have suffered as much pain as others and to date I have slept well.
there have been moments I have regretted having this done but is in 'in the moment' and I really couldn't have carried on with my old knees, I will be having my right knee done towards the end of the year
will be thinking of you on the 13th x

so another trip to see the nurse but good news no more steri strips, at long last I can start bending my knee again. got physio Thursday so lets hope my recovery hasn't been delayed to much. on the plus side been walking more and no pain meds feeling good still icing and elevating but no pain yay

@vallee My husband hates the steri strips and probably helped a few of his to 'fall off'. Glad you aren't having pain! You are early for that! But keep a few handy just in case, some days will be rougher than others, but those days will go away.

I'm with your husband, I hate the steri strips. My OS took them off a few days after I got them.
