YAY Niki! So very happy for you! Isn't it the best feeling to feel like yourself again? I had such tremendous gains to being back to myself in March! I started shooting again which couldn't make me happier! I even had my first wedding last weekend and afterwards my back/neck hurt more than my knee! Haha! I wrapped my knee in an ace bandage with half a Lidoderm patch and it really helped. Neither of the venues had elevators, so carrying my equipment (25lbs) and stairs were a bit of a challenge, so I just took it step-by-step and I was fine!

This week I'm going to attempt walking on the beach and the elliptical and my Pilates Reformer classes next week. I'm so excited and happy to be resuming my normal activities because there were times during recovery I got so depressed thinking I would never be able to return my usual activities! I even packed up my Kodiak ice machine! Patience surely is a virtue

Jeez! Just when you tell everyone how great you feel you're doing, you spend too much time on your feet and then PAY FOR IT! Yesterday I did the weight class at the gym, then went to my granddaughter's soccer game (where I sat mostly), and then came home and worked on a project for my granddaughter's birthday. Wound up standing in the kitchen for about 3 1/2 hours, in my flip flops no less. Didn't think much about it or about how long I'd been on my feet (or that I was wearing flip flops) until later when--dang it--that old tight, swollen, stiff feeling was back big time. I iced and elevated but I'm still feeling it today, so I'm trying to stay off my feet as much as I can. Not sure what I'm going to do about the flip flop issue...they are definitely my shoe of choice once it gets to be 70 degrees! :rolleyespink:
Niki
P.S. Thank you all for the well wishes! The support of this group still continues to amaze me!

You can purchase orthopedic sandals and flip flops!!! Here is a link to one web site. There are others. Do some searching and you'll find something. Of course, they cost more than cheap flip flops, but your feet and body will thank you.

Congratulations on your amazing journey, Niki. You have been through such a lot and I'm so happy for you now that you have made such tremendous progress :thumb:

Niki, rest can turn this around and some shoes with support. I found that since my surgery I need a good arch support for my TKR. I also found that when I spend time in my old shoes (prior surgery ones), that I get some pain in my knee.

Guess we have to "listen" to these new parts and take better care of ourselves.:friends:

Yea for you, Niki! May we all do as well as you have going forward.

Thank you all for the info on shoes. I thought it was me but I'm now convinced my pre surgery shoes all need to hit the dustbin. I'm checking out healthyfeet sandals as I have high arches and would probably benefit from their shoes.

I'm going shopping for new shoes next week! I am not a shoe fanatic by any stretch of the imagination, but I believe I do need new casual shoes for every day use. I have been feeling ok with my old Ecco slip-ons with the orthopedic inserts, but obviously my gait has changed.

The link has some nice stuff.

Glad you're improving, Niki, even with little setbacks.

Jamie, Thanks for the link. I think y'all are right. I know I should wear better shoes. My favorite flip flops are the kind you can buy for about $2.50 at Walmart or Target! I love them because they are so cheap I can have lots of crazy colors to wear with everything. And if I'm not wearing them I'm wearing my slippers which have even less cushion in the sole than flip flops. Since I work from home I don't have a need to wear "real" shoes, so I never do. But there are some nice flip flop type sandals on that site. I'm going to try some and see if I can feel a difference. Makes me nervous to order shoes online though without getting to try them on. We'll see how it goes.....

HI
I agree that flip flops are not the footwear of choice after a TKR.
That doesn't stop me from wearing them, but I have upgraded to flip flops that offer support.

I do order alot of shoes online and you can find online stores that offer free shipping AND free return shipping, if they don't fit.

That makes it relatively easy to try on shoes without regret.
Of course you can go into the mall and find a store that specializes in shoes for walking.
You will find a number of stylish yet supportive sandals.
You will not find them cheap. It is worth every penny.
Best to you. Summer is coming!

I asked at hospital check up and they said I could wear flip flops iftey felt ok. Haven't tried yet but was hoping to wear them round the pool on holiday

Becky.....wearing flip flops for short periods of time should never be a problem. But.....at least in America these days.....people have made flip flops their shoe (?) of choice for "all day, every day, everywhere except the fanciest of restaurants" shoe. This is not particularly good for anyone's feet and body. But since when did fashion pay attention to good health!!

I have been meaning to check in here for so long.... In some ways I can't believe it's been nine months since I was last on this board, and in other ways it feels like it has been much longer than coming up on 16 months since my TKR. I had to start a new thread cause my old one wouldn't let me post on it. So I'm sorry that this post doesn't contain my "history" for those who don't remember me.

At almost 16 months out (surgery was 9/27/11) I would say I am very used to my new knee. That's probably why it seems longer to me than 16 months. It's hard to remember not having this knee. I am finally (like in the last two weeks or so) not taking any kind of medication in relation to my knee. At the one year point I was still taking 15 mg of Mobic every day. So in the last four months I have weaned myself down from 15 mg to 7.5 mg. From there I switched to two Advil and two 500 mg Tylenol in the morning and at bedtime. From there I dropped the night time dose. After that I dropped the Tylenol and was just taking two Advil every morning. Next I dropped to one Advil in the morning, and then finally to nothing. I would say that my knee still definitely feels better if I am taking some kind of anti-inflammatory, but I am tired of taking pills.

I do everything that I was doing prior to surgery--walk about two miles every morning with my dog. I do the elliptical at the gym for 45 minutes at least three days a week, and I take a weight training class at least twice a week. I do have to modify a few things in the weights class cause I still am not comfortable kneeling on my knee. I still wear my Zensa compression sleeve whenever I workout. I still love that thing!

At my one year follow up appointment with my OS, my femur fracture was not evident on the X-ray at all for the very first time. We actually talked about my hardware for once instead of the fracture! The plan from this point out is to see my OS every two years unless I have a problem.

My range of motion is great--0 to probably about 125 I would guess. Looking back, I think I may have gotten that ROM eventually, but I am still glad that I went the MUA route. I so desperately needed that boost at that point to feel like I was finally making progress. In hindsight, I would still do it again.

So I guess my overall assessment at 16 months out is that my knee is functional. Does it give me problems? Yes. It still hurts when I stand up after sitting for a while. My husband tells me that I limp at times although I'm not aware of doing that. I sometimes have pain going up stairs. I still also feel somewhat off balance, especially on the stairs so going up or down stairs with my hands full still scares me. I like to be holding on to something! So even though my knee is functional, all of these little issues really make me feel like I've aged quite a bit in the last 16 months. Before the surgery I kind of just kept going no matter what my knee felt like, but that's not really possible now. My knee kind of still runs the show!

I hope this post isn't a discouragement for anyone either considering TKR or in the early stages of recovery. We're all different, and no two recoveries are ever the same. I just want to be honest about what this has been like for me and my recovery. I'm used to living with my knee now so it really isn't that big a deal. It just isn't what I expected it to be. Who knows, maybe I will still see improvement over time. Maybe one day I'll actually forget I ever had it done! That's my goal!

Take care y'all. I hope everyone from back in the fall of 2011 is doing well and out living life!
Niki

Hi, Niki!!!! It's so good to hear from you!! My, my.....it's hard for ME to believe it's been 16 months too. Time does disappear, doesn't it. I'm glad to hear that you are doing okay with your knee. You may find some more time resolves some or all of the discomforts you are still experiencing. It is possible to have improvements in the years following surgery. But....it sounds like you have gotten back to your life and that's a very, very good thing!!! Please don't hesitate to post any time and let us know how you're doing.

I'm going to merge this with your old thread and reopen it for others to comment. If you come back and find your recovery thread closed, just sent a quick PM (conversation) to Jo or me and we'll get your thread opened up. Jo closes them after a few months of no activity so that new members don't accidentally post in threads that will never get a response from the thread owner.

Really good to hear from you, Niki! It's good to know that even if the knee isn't perfect (and what is?), you're out there living your life and doing your thing and not being held back by your knee. As Jamie says, don't be a stranger. Let us hear from you once in a while letting us know what you're doing and how things are going. Again, it's just great to hear from you!

Niki,
Thanks for the update, it is good  to hear how well you are doing. Glad the fx is healed, and you continue to recover. Being injured during or after TKR can really slow down the healing process. There are still several members from 2011 posting who are also on the slow train to recovery. Update when you can.

Hi Niki, good to hear from you. I'm just coming on 13 months post op and I too have just about the same lingering niggles that you have - startup stiffness, hubbie telling me I limp at times, sometimes pain on stairs. But I can go hiking for a couple of hours at a time, up mountains so I'm much better off than pre surgery. Great to read that there are others like me.

Hi Niki,
So glad you dropped by. I was just thinng about you the other day, since we have had a few new MUAs here and wanted to tell them your story but could not find it. You sound like you are moving along the road of life very well. I am 19mos out now and I still have a few niggles myself but really don't let them bother me, just look at it as my new "normal". Please don't wait so long to stop in and say hello.
