Re: This is my story

Oh, Janet - thinking of you :friends: I hope that you can find a resolution soon and start feeling good. I hope the new doctors you will see will be able to figure this out for you and put you on the path to recovery. Hugs to you

Re: This is my story

I've just started daily walking....when you first started walking after your surgery how long or far did you walk? And did you increase the distance daily or did you give yourself a week of the same distance, than increase?

Re: This is my story

SL, I have suggested a regime in here Some suggestions for home physio (PT)

Walking
Hip or knee, walking is about the best exercise you can do but again, you need to moderate your time and distance.
Always use your walker, crutches or canes as appropriate, only moving from one to the other as you gain confidence or until as advised by your PT or physio.
I would suggest the following regime

Week 1
Walking around the house. Trips to the bathroom and kitchen are included!
Being up on your feet several times a day as you need to but don't get obsessive about it.
A 5 minute walk every one to two hours is plenty.

Week 2
Start on a plan of walks around the house lasting longer than 5 minutes but don't a) get into too much pain and b) get too tired. Stop before you get to that point.

Week 3
Take short walks outside the house in the garden, driveway or road for about 5-10 minutes maximum, once a day.

Weeks 4 and 5
Lengthen the walks to about 10-15 minutes once a day, maybe twice a day if it doesn't cause your knee/hip to swell or be painful.

Weeks 6 and onward
Start taking car trips to the shops but keep them short and sweet at the start, no longer than 15-20 minutes
Take at least one 5 minute rest while you are out.

Re: This is my story

I've been trying to take Jo's advice and stay away from here for awhile as I've been really in not a very good mood because of my pain etc., but I miss you guys :cry4:.

I see the new #3 OS on Monday and I am telling him even if he doesn't see anything on film I have to have another revision. You wonderful people have given me the courage to do it.

I had such a horrendous experience with the past 2 surgeries that I have been petrified to go thru it again but I am letting life pass me by, and the person I am now, is not the old Janet. I am a miserable excuse for a person.

I also found out from a well respected psychopharmacologist that the reason the opiods do not work for me is because I can't absorb them because of a missing enzyme in my brain  needed to absorb them.

He had me google "Practical Pain Management" and in the search area type in "why some patients need higher doses of medications". It is a very technical essay but explains so much.

After my THR (with unidentified fracture) I was given oxycodone and oxycontin and it was raw pain that I was in. Nobody would believe me. Finally, a PP at that hospital made a different cocktail without the opiods and i had "better" pain management. Of course they still didn't know I had a fracture so the pain wasn't fully controlled.

Anyway, now I know what to tell the new OS as far as what I need when we do this again. Pain management is such a big factor in trying to recover.

Anyway, thanks again for all the help you folks have given me. Never thought I'd be doing this again for this leg, but I am! A pain free, shiny new hip for Christmas :th_heehee:!

And, I can now honestly say that the other won't be very far behind as it is really acting up now too!

So, that's the latest. I will let you know what the new OS has to say and finally go thru with it.

Re: This is my story

Wow, janet! There's no stopping you now  i hope you like the os you see on monday. We'll all be thinking of you! :thumb:

Re: This is my story

Can't wait to hear how Monday goes for you Janet. You've been suffering for way too long and you need to be able to look forward to a bright New Year ahead of you. We are all in your corner !! :friends:

Re: This is my story

Janet I am so glad to read your post, as it is heartbreaking to see you not being able to move on with your life, like the rest of us. I was petrified of my revision but my recovery was uneventful, and so unexpected as I suffered so much after the initial first replacement, so Janet no two are the same, I really hope you have as good an experience as I had. The very best of luck to you:thumb:.

Re: This is my story

All best wishes for your appointment on Monday. I know how important it is to you.

I have constant slight discomfort which I don't imagine will get any better now (it will be 2 years this coming New Year's Eve since my accident in Peru) so I can well imagine how exhausted you are, coping with true pain.

Forgive me laughing at your phrase, but like you I am also feeling a bit like "a miserable excuse for a person" at present. I write scripts for a charity for blind children (www.livingpaintings.org) and the current one is not going well. The girl I deal with at the charity and I cannot agree on how to approach the subject, and - no doubt very childishly - I resent her telling me how to do something I've been doing for 40 years. Particularly as she gets paid, and I don't.

Well, that's enough of that.

I do hope the appointment goes well.

Re: This is my story

Sorry, it's been a long day. He can see nothing wrong, feels everything is placed perfectly, and his only guess is that I may be reacting to the metal. He would not revise again as he can't see any good reason to.

So, in a nutshell, I am relieved? and disappointed :rolleyespink:? I am speechless...

Re: This is my story

If there is he didn't mention it. I trully think he didn't want any part of it as he is an OS at the same hospital where all the damage occurred even though he is in a different office /building/practice.

For all I know, he may be a good buddy to my original OS. I don't know, just disappointed.

Re: This is my story

Ya I thought there was a blood test to see if there is a rise of something from the metal. Hmm, Im sure Jo or Jamie would know but here is a little info on MoM implants and reactions.

I hate to think about people behaving that way but I think lots of times doctors, etc really do "cover" up for each other.

But you gotta keep pushing on and know that there is someone out there to help you!

Re: This is my story

Janet, was this appointment today with another surgeon in Boston? I didn't realize this doctor practiced at the same hospital as one of your other surgeons. That pretty much means it wasn't really an independent opinion. So sorry you didn't get that new set of eyes on your hip.

What about the other large medical facilities in Boston? I agree that you cannot continue in pain. You need to find someone who is willing to address the problems you're experiencing.

Re: This is my story

I'm so sorry that your appt today didn't help you at all. Haldox has some great information on the websites that she linked. Don't give up! You have to get opinions from doctors outside of your area. Maybe you can send your x-rays and a description of your history and symptoms to doctors via email or regular mail for opinions and only go see the ones who may have some answers for you. Keep searching until you find someone who will take you seriously. You deserve better :friends:
