Re: This is my story

You know, I've fallen twice since THR. The first time, I was about six months post-op and I fell off my bicycle. I knew I was going down and panicked and tried to fight it. That was a mistake. Gravity always wins in the end. I think being so tense made the impact of the fall feel a lot worse. I was sore for the better part of a week after that and covered with bruises.

The second time I fell, I was a year post-op. I was walking to a Pilates class and slipped on some wet, muddy leaves. No warning... no nothin'... just me suddenly on my butt in the mud. I didn't have time to tense up and nothing was injured but my pride. :th_heehee: I guess by then I already knew that I could fall down and live to tell the tale, so it was less scary. I just wiped the mud off me and went on to my exercise class...

Re: This is my story

Thanks Alex...where I had already had the fracture I just really freaked out. I went down hard, on the hardwood floor. Still pretty sore around my knees. I'm pretty heavy...and older. I'm trying to calm down about it.

Re: This is my story

Janet, it would take something very major like an automobile accident to cause problems with the prosthesis. Please try not to worry about it and just keep pushing to find out what has been going on in there.

Re: This is my story

Great to hear from you Janet and that you're feeling more positive. I think we all live in fear of harming our implants but I guess if we're told we can go and do things like horse riding 8 weeks on from the op ( not that I think for a moment I would be capable of it) it must be stuck in pretty tight! Fingers crossed for good news for you.
Take care x

Re: This is my story

You know when you just know that something is not right with your body? Well, I know and have known since summer that there is something definately wrong. Nobody has been able to figure it out...yet.

The NP confirmed yesterday that the Rheumatologist has done all sorts of testing for a Connective Tissue Disease, which is exactly what I kept coming up with.

Last night (and every night now) if I try to roll over in bed, it feels like my knees just start to dislocate. As if the bones no longer connect. Then, when I grab my legs and make a conscious effort to strighten them out, they go back in place. This has made them very sore to walk on and unstable.

This is a very different type of pain than the inflammation pain of the OA while off the Osteo Bi Flex. I just don't know if I want to start all over again with another facility when these guys are really just trying everything but at a loss.

Anyway, that is how I fell. I turned and my knee buckled. It did the same thing last night but i caught myself. And when it happens, it hurts!

Could this possibly mean this is the beginning of needing knee replacements? I just don't understand what is going on here...:sigh:

Re: This is my story

Janet, I know it is exhausting to keep explaining over and over to new doctors what is going on, but you really do need to keep pursuing it with whoever you can find that may be able to help you. Neither you nor any of us here on BoneSmart are going to be able to say for sure what the problem is. There is someone out there who can. Your job is to keep looking until you find them. If it means you have to drive to another area to get to larger, more specialized doctors.....then you need to do that.

One thing you cannot do is to continue on like this.

Re: This is my story

You are absolutely right! I started thinking too much ...

I can be my own worse enemy at times :rolleyespink:..

You know, I think I started second guessing everyone in the medical field when I knew there was something drastically wrong with my THR and kept being told it was fine.

Now, when I hear everything is "fine" I just don't buy it...

Sorry.

Re: This is my story

No need to apologize, hon. You have been through a lot and it's understandable that you get frustrated with people not getting to be bottom of your problem. Just don't give up!!!

Re: This is my story

Hi Janet!
I wish that all of us Bonesmarties could hire a jet, pick you up and swoop you away to THE doctor that will give you the answers you need.
(We'd have a ton of fun on that flight, too!)
OK, back to reality.....we are all here for you and I'm sending you cyber hugs from California! :friends:

Re: This is my story

Hi again, Janet. Scary about your knee buckling. I think you need to get x-rays. Suprisingly, well at least for me, a knee/knees can progress pretty quickly and become bone-on-bone. Since you have a messed up hip, your knees have probably taken on a lot the hip's slack. And the rains you've had probably didn't help any.

I know it was just a month that I knew I was bone-on-bone to the time I had the actual surgeyr. At this point, I could hardly walk and knees attempted to buckle. And the pain was so bad I almost walked through a glass window leaving the store in which I was working.

So please have the knees checked out. Hopefully it's NOT your knees, maybe just some early osteo in there. But finding out would really help and then you can move on from there.

Re: This is my story

Thanks H. Got a lot to discuss with the OS on the 12th. Can't keep having this stuff happen. So sick of pain and taking pain meds just to get thru the day.

I know I have OA pretty much everywhere in my joints. So, if this is a thing that progresses quickly, that could be what's going on. Did you get the same sensations rolling over in bed? That is wierd...:skeptical:

Re: This is my story

Not really from rolling over in the bed. I used to come home from work and stretch out and cry. Then when the rains came, I couldn't hold my body up any longer. I was doing that crab walk. Unreal how quickly it all came down crashing.

But, you don't know until those knees are x-rayed. Looking back, I should have gone in earlier, should have gotten some of the knee braces I've seen written about here. And it took a second opinion to get any help. And the first Dr. was a well-reknowned Dr. I'd seen the Doc on CNN!. She told me to keep moving. Yeah right-o-NOT

When the buckling started, I was using two knee braces (the blue slip on ones) on each knee. Kept changing shoes thinking it was my shoes. :sigh:

Re: This is my story

Ok, so I'm closing the cover on that chapter. It was a terrible place to be stuck in for a few weeks. Time is a great healer. You guys have been my salvation...

Today is the beginning of a new week and I am going forward with positive thoughts. I did see the final lab results this morning and I was NEGATIVE for Lyme Disease!

So I am counting my blessings, making myself stop thinking paranoid and going forward with a new attitiude. Better days are coming :thumb: !

Re: This is my story

:ccheers:I'll vote for the "better days," Janet.

Re: This is my story

Oh Janet, I hope you get some answers soon. And I totally agree with you that you have to question the medical profession and not let them palm you off. They did that with me too over my hips, over my hernia, over Hashimotos diesease.

You know your own body, you live in it 24/7 Never give up Janet

Bless you

Tanny x

Re: This is my story

Janet, I used to experience something similar to what you are describing in bed. The poor, atrophied muscles were too weak to hold the leg together. I would roll over in bed and my leg felt like a chicken drumstick, being twisted out of place. It got better once the strength returned.

Re: This is my story

Yup! That's exactly the sensation Alex :th_heehee:. Bill said they used to call it a "trick" knee. Not so funny when it wakes you up though. If I ever get over the aches and pain and stiffness from my tumble, I am going to start walking more. This is no fun at all...thanks.
