Re: This is my story

Janet Following your story and hoping so much each day I check in and find you have an answer. But at least normal results are saying although something is wrong, it isn't creating havoc with your system. The hunt continues----and we all are here with you. :friends:

Re: This is my story

I'm SO Pleased your lab results were normal, Janet.
I know you were hoping that perhaps a solution would be found via the results, but I also felt that you were very afraid of what those results would be.
So I think that everything shows up as Normal is a very good result.

As you say, it does look like the Prednisone was the trigger which set off all these extra problems.
Back at the beginning of this thread, you were having problems with pain from your hip and Jo was looking at your x-rays.
That was a big deal in itself, but once you started on the Prednisone, that deal became huge.
Coincidence? Personally, I don't think so.

I don't know what else to say, Janet.
Just sending my continued best wishes and hoping that you will get REAL help sooner, rather than later.
And in the meantime, let's hope you get that Lidocaine drip very soon and that it gives you relief while they really concentrate on finding the answer.

Re: This is my story

Janet, sorry you are still in a lot of pain, but I'm really glad to hear all those tests are normal. Try and rest so you can get strength up to see your OS again. Don't give up!!

Re: This is my story

not giving up...trying to pick myself up...very hard in so much pain...

Re: This is my story

Janet

That's great news about the rest of your test results and also hope you get your Lidocaine drip in the very near future.
You seem to have stumped all the medical staff you have come across so far and hope there is someone out there with a bit of medical brain power to resolve this problem.
Lets hope this new guy you are going to see can do something about it. :grouphug2:

Re: This is my story

God bless you, honey. This must be so hard after such a high. I really wanted to say something then to warn you but couldn't bear to burst your bubble. To be honest, it was stupid of your doctor to even try that.

Re: This is my story

Thanks for so much love and healing wishes...I think they are working! Jo! Do not EVER be afraid to say something, good, OR bad! That is why I am here! In any event, it was ok to take them for one round perhaps, but after the two doses I think I was really hurt by them.

After the horrid pain of last week, both mental and physical, I finally decided to go back on all my supplements. Last night I was still in terrible pain but this morning I am feeling a little relief.

Poor Rheumatologist! He really is so compassionate. I came right out and told him the darn steriods did this and what could he say? I DIDN'T KNOW ANY BETTER! My GP apologized when she gave them to me for the sun poisoning, and I was clueless about the harm they could do.

The new OS gave them to me in the first place, to see if it made the thigh pain go away. So, between the two, it was WAY TOO MUCH!

I also remember how much pain I was in after my THR when I had been off all my supplements for the 2+ months. No one had figured on the fracture so I was off them from mid February until sometime in May.

In any event, I trully believe that has added to this painful situation. I take Osteo BiFlex (G&C) as well as Vitamin D, and Fish Oil, among others. Those three are for bone and joint health. I am a firm believer as I saw what happened in the past.

I NEVER had a double chin (moon face from the prednisone?) and although I have odd shaped knees, there is unbelievable swelling going on. I think these are the fatty deposits that are a few of the side effects of Prednisone.

For sure I was on a high from them. I hadn't been without pain for ages. Well, look at the price I have paid for a few weeks of feeling good. I guess it just isn't in the cards...

But, pain and stiffness are apart of aging when you have OA, so I was slower but ok with it. This recent suffering has been unlike anything I have ever gone through in my life and hope to never go through again.

I hope time and building the supplements back up in my system will get me back to where I was before this. We shall see...

So, now I have an appointment set up at the Pain Center for Friday 9/30 to see about a Lidocaine drip. The Rheumatologist wants to do a conference call with the pain guy to discuss this while I am there, but now I don't know if that wil be necessary if this is subsiding.

I will keep the appointment in any event to see what he has to say about the on going thigh pain whaich has been the least of my worries since all of this.

The thing of it is, I really do think I had some sore of extreme flare up, but of what?

Well, I am just taking it day by day until then and see where this goes. All I can do now is pray that I NEVER have to take a steroid ever again as I don't think I caould go thru something like this again.

Although my GP has been right on about my treatments and lab work according to the Rheumatologist, I don't feel real good about her after going thru all of this...:skeptical:

Re: This is my story

Hi Janet,
Please take advantage of the conference callk between the pain guy and the Rheumatologist, even if the pain is subsiding (and thank goodness if it is).
Even though you are now back on the supplements, this can surely be taken into account when they discuss your case?

They really do need to get to the bottom of this.

Another thing...
I don't want to be a doom and gloom merchant, but have you had a bone scan (DEXA)?
Because prednisone is also linked to low bone density (but that could be when used over a longer period).
But if they do a DEXA along with everything else, and then suggest you take medication to help your bones, PLEASE think carefully before taking it.
There's some pretty nasty medication out there and the last thing you want is anything else messing with your health right now, when, with careful use of supplements, you shouldn't have to.
(Sorry if that last subject was unnecessary, but it was on my mind).

Hope the pain continues to subside.
Thinking of you.
Suzie

Re: This is my story

Janet, I saw a post of yours on another thread that indicated you were going to consider another revision. I think that is an excellent decision to at least check into it with a totally new revision specialist. Are you still leaning that way?

Re: This is my story

Yup! And it is why my new OS has been trying everything (including the Prednisone :hissyfit:) to see just why I am going thru all of this STILL at 17 months later!

Unfortunately, the fly bite and sun poisoning happened in the midst of all this. Geeze, when anything can go wrong it sure seems to, with me. I mean, how many THR's end in a fractured femur?, 1%!

Nope, all of this has shown me that I AM DONE! DONE looking for a magic bullet! I am far enough away from the original THR that it is not as scary as it was back then.

I need to go back to the new OS and lay it on the line...this is NOT living. I should NOT be as disabled as I am, and if that is ONE GOOD THING that came out of trying the Prednisone, it did show me what living is all about!

So, phone call on Monday...and yes, I am PETRIFIED :hate-shocked:!

Re: This is my story

You'll feel renewed strength once you make the call. There is something about feeling "in charge" of a situation and moving this direction with your new mindset will give you that strength, hon.

Re: This is my story

Janet,

I'm so very sorry you have been through SO much, I just read your thread after you posted on mine. I'm glad you have the courage to go ahead with laying it all out on the line with your new OS. It sounds like you are serious and ready to take the step needed to get you back to a life that would be a lot better then suffering with the pain you've been enduring for too long now. I agree that you should be well healed 17 months after your last revision.

I can understand why you would be petrified. However, since you know what to expect with a revision already maybe once you discuss it with your new orthopedic you will feel a sense of relief knowing you will soon be able to put all of it behind you, and you can begin a better quality of life. As long as he or she agrees the fix would be another revision.

From the bottom of my heart, I'm wishing you the best, and will keep you in my thoughts and daily prayers.

Re: This is my story

Oh Janet, you are such a trooper. I admire you for taking actions and thinking of revision. In case it makes you feel a little better: I am off the prednisone for 4 days now, will never take them again. And I got a call to go to Toronto to the RA clinic on Wednesday. But I do take my halibut oil again. We are all here for you.

Re: This is my story

Makes no sense at all to continue taking daily percocet and NOT getting any better! I needed that to function. That is NOT normal! But yes, I am the one who has to go thru it and I am scared.

I'm more scared now as I NEVER had a problem with my knees and now since the Prednisone, THEY are KILLING ME! Well, I know they have to wait a fairly long time after Prednisone before you can have a surgery, so hopefully they return to "normal" soon...

Isn't it funny what we put ourselves thru rather than face reality? I mean this is INSANE! And yet I have done it day after day. Uugh!

Well, tomorrow is another day. In any event, I do have to call the OS and we'll take it from there....we shall see :skeptical:...

***Sorry Suzie, I meant to add that I had TWO bone scans this year! One in Februry when the new OS was looking for infection? And in August for the same reason after the fly bite.

So, I was on it pretty much for a month, but so far everything is ok :prayer1:...

***And Renate, I would NEVER take a chance with that stuff again. Even in tiny doses. Very, very dangerous. Another thing I need to discuss with the new OS :elfrevenge:...

Re: This is my story

Janet - I really do think you are heading in the right direction. Lay it on the line! Time to get on with living! We are with you!

Re: This is my story

Hello Janet

Thank you for responding to my tale of woe. I have only just read your thread, and feel embarrassed that I did not comment on your current difficult situation. Your pain must be very debilitating.

I have zilch medical knowledge, so offer no views in that area. Also, as a very devout atheist, I don't reckon any prayers from me would exactly be given priority attention if there really does turn out to be someone watching over us.

All I would offer is a practical suggestion. That is to write everything down. In as logical and concise manner as you can contrive. What symptoms occurred, and when. Dates of your appointments. Who did you see? What did they say? Results of tests.

In such a complicated manner as this it can be easy to get confused. Sometimes you are asked at an appointment "And when did you start taking the tablets?", and your mind just goes a blank. Your sheet of notes would tell you the answer.

Of course, there is always the danger that some of "the professionals" will take exception to this, and see it as a threat to their authority. But I believe the vast majority want you restored to health as much as you want that yourself.

All the best

Glynis
