PKR My new (partial) knee

I blog at https://blatherbybubbe.wordpress.com. There's some stuff there about my knee but mostly it's just "foolish talk" (which is what blather means  ). It's as anonymous as I can make it because it includes posts about family stuff which I try not to let get back to them. I can't afford real therapy. :rotfl:

Time for an update. Yesterday was my six month follow up with my OS. Dr. Williams is a good example of the old time family doctor. Or at least my idea of what the old time family doctor was. He beams ALL. THE. TIME. Seriously, all the darn time. Not that that is a bad thing. I always feel more cheerful after my appointment.:happydance: Even when I don't feel like I'm making much progress he's reassuring and encouraging.

The bottom line is, I'm doing fine. When I mentioned how lovely and unswollen my leg looks first thing in the morning he beamed and nodded while pressing around the calf and knee. I went on about how swollen it is by the end of my work day and he nodded again (still beaming) :snork: and explained that when tissues have been swollen for a long time it can take awhile for them to return to and retain their "normal" state. (Quotes are mine; normal is a setting on the clothes dryer.) He gave me the all clear for another six months and advised that I should set up an appointment around one year after my surgery date.:yes!:

In addition, I'm gearing up for Saturday when Hubs and I will be headed to downtown Seattle for Comicon with our youngest daughter! :yahoo:It will be a LOT of walking but I think I'm up for it. I don't plan to stand in line for autographs or photo ops with celebs though. Standing is a lot harder and I don't really have any interest in celebrities or their signatures. I do want to sit in on a couple of panels, but my main reason to be there is - PEOPLE WATCHING!!:egypdance: The costumes are going to be fabulous and I plan on soaking in all that creativity. Maybe I'll go in costume next year. Probably not; I can knit and crochet but that's about it as far as creativity goes. Unless you count the novel gathering dust somewhere at home.

So what do y'all have planned for the weekend?
:what:

Great update Lori! :goodpost: Sounds like the Comicon will be fun, take pics and share!!!

Plans for the weekend? :umm: My boy will be attending a b/day party on Sunday other than that hoping that we don't have the heavy wet snow fall that is in the forecast...!

I hear ya on the swelling. By the end of the week, my ankle and and calf look nothing like they do at the beginning of the week! Feels good to put it up!

How was Comicon? Did you go in costume? :)

Wondering how your weekend went? Did you have lots of fun? How was the knee after the anticipated walking?

Wow! Where did the time go? I wound up off work Thursday (annual physical exam) and Friday (taking daughter to urgent care) and today I just about killed myself trying to catch up! Okay, not really. But man was it busy first thing this morning. I got to bed late last night because I HAD to watch The Walking Dead (not to mention the follow on show, The Talking Dead ) and I set the alarm for an hour later than usual. That puts me two trains after my normal departure but still in the office by 8 am unless the train runs into issues.

I like arriving earlier because I can linger over breakfast and coffee. This morning I didn't get to eat (a measly english muffin) until almost 10 o'clock. Finally a little after noon things seemed to quiet down and I got a chance to read some in my book club book.

To bring y'all up to date - Comicon was awesome!:happydance: We didn't go in costume this year but we have plans to do that next year, plus we want to rent a hotel room downtown and get 3-day passes so we can bypass the HUGE check-in line on Saturday morning!:yikes: I didn't do too badly with the walking; the standing got to me at times but I expected that. Hubs and I didn't stay long; our daughter's friends arrived in the afternoon and once we knew she had a way home we headed out ourselves. Between both of us being on the plump  side causing us to be sore and tired and the fact our dogs were probably ready to go out, it was a good decision.

Here's my favorite photo taken at the Con. A gold star to anyone who can identify what this is! Anyone?

A bubble gum machine?

Great to hear that you had a wonderful time at Comicon! I hear a lot about it on 'The Big Bang Theory', lol! You didn't mention it but sounds like the knee held up and caused no problems? Excellent!

The knee did fine. My hip on the other hand...:sigh: But it's just bursitis and it acts up now and again. Especially now that I'm more active because the knee is doing better. Oh well.

As for the photo above, that is Tom Servo from Mystery Science Theater 3000. And yes, I'm talking about the bubble gum machine creature, not the guy holding him. The guy holding him built him from a kit. His little mouth worked and everything. If you haven't seen Mystery Science Theater 3000 you're missing out. If you like campy, corny "B" movies that is! Which I do:yay:.

And I LOVE the Big Bang Theory! I'm actually thinking of dressing as Amy Farrah Fowler for next year's Comicon!:rotfl:

This weekend I learned I'm not ready to get off OTC pain meds. Hubs and I had our annual check-ups recently and the doctor wanted a fasting blood draw for each of us so Friday night after meeting friends for dinner we began our fast. Since I wasn't eating I didn't want to take pain meds on an empty stomach and I went without relief for over 15 hours!:yikes: I haven't hurt that bad in a very long time. Immediately after the blood draw we got some food and I took the full Bonesmart pain cocktail. I can't say improvement was very quick but I did start to feel a little better. Well enough I went with Hubs up to my in-laws to pick up our new (to us) toy:

You can guess what we'll be doing this summer right? :yes!:

Sunday we spent a couple hours with the kids and grandkids at a park near our house. The park has this cool swinging ellipitical "machine" and I felt good enough to give it a try. The movement felt good though its design doesn't give the knees much of the action. We walked the dogs; watched our five year old grandson flit from one activity to another and played peekabo with his seven month old sister. My feet were sore by the end of the day but my knee no worse than a normal day!:yay: It's really, really good to see improvement!

WOW! that new toy means a lot of off road camping somewhere!!! Got a new knee---so you'll be able to enjoy. It's nice to be able to get out with family and have a good time and not come home in agony. Keep up the good work--getting more like "normal" every day.

Take care and keep us posted. We care.

Lori
I am surprised that the big science fiction person (you :) ) hasn't found this thread yet? :heehee:
THIS ONE

I don't know how I missed it either! Well, yeah I guess I do. I usually visit here on my breaks (or when it's slow) at work and since I'm on limited time I generally check in on the folks I know. So I frequently miss meeting new people to my detriment. I'm going to have to find a way to spend more time here when I'm not supposed to be working!

I'm back! :yay: Between work's browser being outdated and not allowing me to even SEE the comment boxes, let alone get my cursor in them and the Husband finally doing housekeeping in our home office - effectively blocking the computer, I have been out of touch for months. To be fair, after spending all day at a computer the last thing I want to do when I go home is spend time at a computer.

But work updated the browser so here I am - YAY!

Confessions first - I have fallen down on the job of recovery. :yikes: My own fault; I got complacent and lazy. It's easy to say that I let work get in the way; I just didn't exercise appropriate self-discipline. I'm paying the price now with soreness and a continued limp.

But I have a plan and for almost a month it has been working! A little over a month ago I learned what a sweet deal we get at the YMCA through work. If only I'd known that before surgery! You can't look backward though, so I joined up. It's right next to my office and so far I've managed to get there once a week in the morning before work to use the pool to get back to my exercises. This week I hope to make it twice (they were closed Monday as was my office). Next week they're closed for their annual clean-up or maintenance something or other. The following week I'm hoping to start the aqua motion classes which happen on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I think I can use my lunch hour and flex time to cover the time out of the office so I don't have to use vacation! :happydance:

I'll also meet with one of their personal trainers to discuss things I can do in the pool to build strength since I think that's my biggest issue right now. I think the structure will be helpful. I love the water and so far it has helped motivate me to get moving again. I'm looking forward to reversing what my laziness let slide.

It is so good to be back; looking forward to getting caught up!
:yes!:
