THR My 5 month post op

Way to go, Gretelin!

While my surgery was posterior, even in that circumstance I was mobile with crutches in a day or two.

I stayed one night in hospital, with a couple of Oxycodone while there. Discharged the next day with script for more, but never took any of them.

I found that 1000 mg of acetaminophen every six hours was sufficient to keep the pain down ... I did want to know where the pain line was so in this regard I may be different from some folks and from some of the professional recommendations. The great thing about taking two 500 mg every six hours was that I was able to methodically track usage, then eliminate one of the 500 mg pills when I thought I didn’t need the full dosage. It was, however, a full 10 days before I was able to begin to reduce the Tylenol.

You sound so positive - you’re going to be so surprised how great you feel in just a few days!

I’ve always been pretty good about having a high pain threshold and not needing narcotics. But this time, I am taking full advantage so I can endure getting out of bed and getting to the toilet. I was strong in my arms and legs before this surgery but it’s much harder than I thought it’d be. Even when I fractured my left femoral neck it wasn’t this bad. So keep ahead of the pain so you can function and stay with it.

Hopefully tomorrow we will try again PT. They keep my compression socks 24/7 they also gave me 3 execises to do in bed. every 2 hours around the clock. Its now 9: 58 pm and Im fighting my sleep. Im waiting for the tramadol at 10:56. Well, my beautiful bone people I will leep you posted on my recovery. I love you all!

Congrats on your new hip @Gretelin and welcome to the healing side.
Please, do not rush with the PT... allow your body to heal first!
If you haven't already, please read the articles @Jamie posted here and take it ease.
Easy is the key!
Good luck!
:)

Oh.my PT came today they got me out of bed walked to the door but got really dizzy had to sit down. Now they have me with legs elevated sitting on a chair.
I feel much better being sitting up than laying down. Also my BP 101/64. Yesterday 94/46.

It's not unusual to gave a bit of light headedness. Just take it slow and be sure you are holding on to something when you first get up from a seated position.

Good evening and congrats on your new hip! @Gretelin
Early days, it will all get better. Take it easy and move slowly until you're feeling more steady on your feet.
I hope you have a peaceful evening!

All you beautiful people that are having surgery in November, Do Not Fear a thing. Its all worth it. Take the risk and you will see at the end You will gain your life back and be totally pain free. The best decision I have ever made. I will do it again and again. I was terrified that I even cancelled my surgery on Sept.18. It was meant to be because I didnt feel comfortable with the surgeon. I found an amazing surgeon in Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, Florida and decided to go with him and never back up. Its really mind over body. The day of your surgery you will go with apositove mindset I will come out excellent and I will have a successful surgery. God will be with you all protecting and making sure everything will run smoothly. I love you all. Iam writing to all of you from my hospital bed. My surgery was on Tuesday Nov.5, 2019. Im going through PT and its a little challenging for me, becsuse they hsve to train those muscles on that leg and get it to normalcy. Well, keep me post it on your way to your recovery. God Bless You All.

Yes bone smart is especially fantastic when you’re awake during the night with insomnia and everyone else asleep xxx. Every question that has possibly been thought of is found on here, which is great. Means I didn’t have to annoy my specialist lol xx.

Im still at the hospital. OS came today and gave me the discharged for tomorrow jippy!! Real Hippy Hippy!
Get to go home tomorrow Friday I miss my 4 babies( doggies). The only thing that is a little challenged is my blood pressure. Thank God the 2nd time when the PT came at 2pm today my BP was 115/69. I walked around the corridor with the walker, then I walked to the gym where they had me do toe raise exercises, squats and going up and down the stairs. Today they taught me how to use the reacher pick. They showed me how to put my underwear, pick up shoes, put soft pants on. Then they had me practice on some short crutches. PT guy was still holding me by the waist with a protective belt.I came in the room sat on a chair with the kegs raised. At all times iced to the wound and compression socks. I get at 8am and 2pm usually my meds. They are 2 tylenols 500mg each, 1 celebrex, 1 baby aspirin 81 mg, 1 stool softener. No more tramadol for me it was making my blood pressure low. Now is 12:22 maybe I have insomnia my blood pressure is 90/50. Yhe y took off all of my Ivs this morning but they left the port. The nurse just hooked a pottasium chloride iv on to get my bp up.Im here in the bed doing the exercises the nurse told me to do every 2 hrs around the clock. The nurse gave me some warm prune juice to make me go to the bathroom.Hopefully it will help me go. The pain meds can make you very constipated. I brought some prunes in a ziplock bag and will eat 5 a day. I have not taken a shower and I really want to bathe. When I go hone tomorrow the nurse said to take out the bandage when taken a shower and then pat it dry and put a new bandage. Well, my beautiful bone people writing to you from my hospital bed.

Hi Gretelin, you will see your post in 'Noises' has been moved here to your recovery thread. BoneSmart likes all recovery posts to be in the same thread, to act as a diary dedicated to that member's recovery.

Safe travels home, Gretelin! Please don't share your home address like you did your hospital name, address and room number, you don't want any unwelcome visitors knocking at your door. :heehee:  We want you to be safe.:)

I'll bet your fur babies will be as happy to see you, as you are to see them. :doggie:

The grabber was an invaluable tool to me. Actually to most of us. You quickly realize what an asset it can be early on into recovery when it suddenly feels like you're dropping everything, or everything feels just out of reach.

Please take it slow with exercising and PT early on. Squats are not really recommended as they are tough on a new hip. Muscles and tendons that have atrophied pre-op can be easily overstressed. They can also starain the hip, buttock and thigh muscles. Proceed with caution and if anything hurts, STOP.

Let us know how you're doing once you're comfortably settled in at home.
Happy Friday!
@Gretelin

Well, my beautiful bone people getting in the car took a lot and effort from the transporter at the hospital and my husband. I have a Hummer and is really high. The drive was almost 1 hour because of traffic. Getting home was great but coming out of the car was not s picnic. Getting into the house was ok. I have big steps. It wasnt too bad. I went on the couch with my legs up. My doggies were happy to see me. I was afraid they were going to jump on me so my husband put the walker next to the chair where I had my legs raised.I stayed there for a while. My husband went to Publix and left my prescribtions in Walgreens. We ate and I went to bed. Getting in bed was another journey. I have a high bed. My husband prepared the mattress with the hospital mattress they give you when you leave. Let me tell you I coulnt sleep. Sleeping with that wedge between your legs and on your back seems impossible. Im really tiered. Im getting a bit frustrated as I drop everything I get with the picker. Now Im going to try to sleep. Im reallly worried with dvts so I ordered on line a compression machine with socks. It was only $58.99. WELL, If you guys have any advice pkease share it. How to position myself in bed and on the couch. Thank you for now. I will try to get some sleep.

Great,

My first hip the common instructions were V spacer, etc.

My second hip, they just said don’t sleep on op side ... I‘m a side sleeper, so put pillow between legs, laid down on non op side and went right to sleep! Pillow is to maintain alignment, I believe.

Good morning @Gretelin and glad to read that you are Home Sweet Home!
You are doing better than I did if you are already sleeping in your bed!
I slept in the recliner for the first two weeks and it was so helpful. I loved it for my naps, too.
I rented one from the home health supply store and it helped lift me when trying to get up out of it, too. Best money ever spent.
As for the couch, I took the back cushion, the furthest one away from my head and laid it on the couch and propped my legs up on it.. It was long enough that I had it tucked way up under the back of my thighs and was propped nicely all of the way to my feet.
It felt so good! I didn't try that until around 3 weeks though, it was too difficult to raise my surgery leg up on it.
You are doing well, I am so happy for you, you were so frightened and worried before your surgery and now you are on your way to healing.. :yay:

Thsnk you CricketHip I had a rough night. I was very uncomfortable. I didnt have pain
I believe Im getting insomnia. Its difficult to sleep on my back with that wedge between my legs. My husband just gave me a bath I clean my badge of honor(wound) Im tiered getting ready to go to bed. Im in the couch with a chair in front to raised my legs but its a bit uncomfortable I should say a lot. Well, my beautiful bone people Love you all goodnite and talk with all of you tomorrow. Much Love, Gretelin.
