THR Massage post THR

My parts have plastic between them. I can run without pain but only choose to do so out of necessity. Just my opinion for my situation but I really don't want to pound the stake in any deeper or risk any other possible damage at this point in life.

Yes, some do engage in high impact sports such as running, jumping, tennis to name a few. While they continually make progress with the durability of the components of the implant, decreasing the wear rate, many favor low impact activity such as walking, swimming, golfing, biking with the hope the implant will last their lifetime.

I was wondering how many of you are having professional massage, at whatever stage of rehab you are at? I am at 9 months with total hip 1 and 3 months with hip 2. I get the same problems many have on the forum with aches and pains, which come and go for no apparent reason. Some though over exercise, some just part of the long term healing process. Swelling on hip 2 has been bad for me as the op needed for work from the surgeon. My wear and tear came from decades of sport including county level running, squash and karate. I am hoping to return to these one day.

I have had 3 sessions, Thai massage, from a local company that also works with semi pro level sports people, as well as the general public so to speak. I am finding it very useful as an addition to general PT from my physio. Because of my physical restrictions caused by years of pre op neglect, she is finding many areas of th body that are tight and stiff, knotted etc.

I’m glad you’re finding some relief through massage. Since you’re 11 months out from your first surgery and only three months post op with the latest, I’d say give it time. Many notice progress into their second and even third year. As long as you understand your limitations and don’t push the activity, I’m sure there’s room for improvement and hopefully getting back to the things you love. Don’t forget about icing when you’re sore or feel you’ve overdone it. Great pain reliever. :ice:
A great week to you!

Thanks Layla. I always take heed of your words. And indeed holding back on exercise is a difficult one for me. I get hammered for this from my wife. Lady physio and lady masseuse. They all gang up on me lol.

Tell them you are healing - not in training! Plenty of time for training later.

Happy Three Month Anniversary, Ric!
Hope your week was sweet…and your weekend is even better.
I see you’re coming up on your one year anniversary for, Lefty soon.
What a Summer you’ll have. :happyfeet:

Thanks Layla. I m probably doing a little too much at the moment because I can , and so i m getting the expected kickback from the body lol. My fault.

So now holding back seems too be my best option.
I can actually swim for an hour or so at medium pace in a 50m pool without any issues once per week, but walking for more than 3 miles is more difficult. I try too do this every day apart from the swimming day. I am still doing some basic pt once per day too.

The only odd issue I have Layla is this.

Left hip after 7 months was fine no issues, then I got the right hip done 3 months ago which despite being more worn, has given me no problems at all. Barely a twinge.

However, I have been getting pains from the left hip, like tight hamstring effect, tight calf muscle even down to the foot. This seems too come and go. Im sure its not the joint, it's more of a dull ache pain which comes and goes depending what i am doing.

Is this down to body rebalancing itself again do you think? My physio thinks it's that or a tight hamstring.

Yes, I do think that’s what it is based on my surgeons PA informing me that our gait changes as our hip deteriorates, then changes once again as our body adjusts to the new prosthetic. I believe with time, it will ease. You’ve experienced two hip replacements within eight months. It makes sense it would take time for all to settle / heal and begin working smoothly together.

I wouldn’t stress about the inability to “comfortably” walk three miles right now. Cut yourself some slack in that area and do only what your body is comfortable with “now” because that will change. Continue to give yourself the TLC you deserve after two major surgeries in such a short time, you’re doing great and with more time, you’ll do even better.

Thanks Layla, wise words as ever.

I think it's a process of self doubt we hippies get when we sense any sort of twinge of new pain... what the heck was that, where does the pain come from, is the new hip failing and so on.

Yep, I agree. We can be our own worst enemy when it comes to allowing our body to do its thing without worrying and wondering…WHY this, or that.

You‘re doing great! :ok:

Just a quick update on my progress.

Walking easily 3 miles.
Swimming for 2 hours.
Indoor exercise bike 1 hour or so.

And the usual array of yoga type stretches etc.

NO meds now, and low level pain at times, which is pleasing.

I still get moderate leg swelling, mainly in the new hip though, which need RICE treatment every other day, especially if I overdo it.

Still getting nothing in the way of pain for newer hip 2, 5 months ago since that op. But still stiffness and calf cramps from the first hip op from over 1 year ago.

Can't remember if I asked this question re synovial joint fluid. We have that in our normal joints, but I have read some papers online to say that the body still produces these fluids for replacement joints to aid mobility. Is this true, maybe the experts on the forum could answer that one. The science of it all interests me.Thanks.

Online article summary about this subject.

Is there synovial fluid after knee replacement?

The synovial fluids around joint replacement devices were typically lower in viscosity than pre-arthroplasty fluids but the protein concentration and phospholipid concentrations tended to be comparable, suggesting that the lining tissue function was preserved after arthroplasty.18 May 2015

Huh?
Umm
hmm :what:
Cats got my tongue :chinstroke: You already know more than me on this topic. I look forward to the response of anyone who has something to share on this.

Regarding your progress - You’re doing great! I haven’t looked back at your thread, but have you ever considered, or tried Magnesium for the cramps? May be worth considering.
Enjoy the weekend!

Will try that thanks.

Can I post a web site on a research paper I have found?

So polite of you to inquire first, Ric. It’s appreciated.
How about if you PM it to either, Jamie, or Jaycey from Admin and they will decide.
Thanks!
