THR Massage post THR

Good to see you are doing well, double hippy friend.:happydance:

Very interesting update Ric A , impressed by your fitness activities, can I ask how is your pain / ache level post workout .
@Ric A

Nothing too severe, just dull aches and stiffness after, and a little the next day.
I still use ice and put my feet up for a hour or so sometimes.

Also, I do warm up and cool down light stretching after each activity.

So overall, no more severe stabbing pains from bone on bone pre op, more just muscular stuff. Particularly in the calf and lower back. Sometimes I use a Tens machine for this, and it does help.

As I say, I make a point of getting a professional massage ever few weeks, and or a chiro. It is expensive, but worth it for the long term benefit it gives.

Cheers @Ric A , taken it easy this last weekend, had booster jab set me back! Can you remember how you were 12 month post? You must trust masseur and chirp, not sure I would have the same confidence unless they could prove their experience in THR’s.
Did you have any set backs or warnings?
Legs wise I’m fine, aside an ache to right side of operated side thigh just above knee.
I’m mainly suffering groin stiffness on op side, which is impacting on my mobility, and a worry that I shouldn’t be still aching?
Agree re warm up and down and some lower back exercises help.
I suppose at nearly 69 I would be getting normal aches and pains, it’s trying to separate these niggles from worrying problems from the new hip.
Finally how’s t’other hip, mine feels ok although sometimes I can feel it.
Good luck and keep it up.

Thanks John.

So the massage I have been having is from an experienced lady of 20 years or so.
She and her partner do a lot of work for sports people too, local football and running clubs etc. She uses a whole variety of different methods, including sports massage, Swedish and so on.
She is well versed on THR and TKR and others, and so takes the required care. I think after a few months after the op our new joints are up to a little form pressure, every person is different of course. I started with a 30 minute gentle massage, to loosen up the muscles. Also, I think one of the key areas is this, you can Google it too.

...............

During a massage, lymphatic drainage stimulates the lymphatic system and increases lymph flow. Increasing lymph flow improves the efficiency of the lymphatic system. A more efficient lymphatic system can reduce the effects of delayed onset muscle soreness and decrease swelling, muscular fatigue, weakness and pain.

............

I do get set backs though, as soon as i push it too much, and you never quite know when you are doing this at the time. However, you feel it later in the day or often the next morning until you mobilise a little. It can be odd and subtle.

I can walk or swim for miles, no problems. Then my wife shows me some beginners Yoga to try, and it can hurt the next day.

So after 12 months hip 2 is still in rehab so to speak, not quite strong enough I feel, and as a result I think it can cause pain and stiffness in hip 1 when had previously settled down well after nearly 2 years... as it tries to compensate for hip 1.

Overall pleased but I really need to work on flexibility, putting socks on can still be an issue at times.

Good luck, oh and as a btw, because I easily get bored with some types of exercise, my wife has nagged at me for decades that despite my high levels of fitness in the past, county squash etc, my core body strength is poor, and I need to work on that one hell of a lot. She has practiced pilates and yoga for at least 20 years now, alongside light weight training with dumbbells. Which is another thing we should all do.

It works like this, see utube and so on...

.............

We spoke to Danielle Spillet to put together the most effective full body workout plan for when you only have small weights at home.

According to Spillet you can still build muscles and get strong with smaller weights, but it’s all about the amount of reps you do and how much time you spend resting in between them.

“In order for muscle to grow, performance to increase or strength to be gained, your body must be forced to adapt to a tension beyond what it has previously experienced,” says Danielle. “One way to achieve this is by gradually increasing the weight.

However, with many of us finding ourselves with limited resources right now, another way to challenge the body is by adjusting our work-to-rest ratio, and using lighter weights with higher reps increases muscle endurance and cardiovascular involvement.”

...........

It really is the trendy, but correct view nowadays that is is perhaps the key thing in health whatever you want to try and achieve.

This is so true. It takes more training than regular massage techniques, but is well worth it to find someone experienced in this type of therapy.

Not sure yet.

Knock abouts first and see how it goes.

3 years marker for me now with both hips.

And finally yesterday I returned to playing squash, for 1 hour at a sensible rate.
I played my wife who is a good player and managed to win.

Today pain free and so i am pleased with that. My aim is too continue to play and slowly build up strength, stamina and mobility around the court.

Great update! It is nice you're doing so well with both hips.
Have a wonderful Summer 2023!

Still wondering about this subject...

How does the artificial hip joint get lubricated?

Article here,

It seems that there might be a possibility that this can happen then.

I've seen it discussed on the forum, namely by our Nurse Emeritus, Josephine and read many research articles.
Synovial fluid (mostly made by cartilage that unfortunately is trashed by OA) is still produced by cells and present even with artificial joints.
There is a lot of differences in the amounts individual bodies produce .... this is an ongoing factor with prosthetic design.
Just as the titanium stems have evolved with pits for encouraging bone growth.... I have read of technology that is evolving for the Ceramic balls to be surfaced in a way to allow it to hold on to synovial fluid more efficiently.
Amazing...

Amazing old bodies we humans have.

Amazing old bodies we humans have.
Indeed... including the brains in the medical fields that come up with the solutions we can use to give us better outcomes....

Quick update.

Squash. match 2 completed.

Played for 1 hour without pain, a little stiff after the game but only leg and arm muscles and no issues with the hips. :) :-) (:

Match 6 now completed and all is well.

Muscle memory is now coming into play with regards stroke play and movement. I am hitting the ball very well now. One issue I have to address is my eyesight. Many years ago my vision was very good, but now I have to use contact lenses. This makes picking up the ball in flight harder, and the focal point between each eye is different too my younger days, if that makes sense. 1 hour moderate paced game and practice is easily manageable now, and very enjoyable.

Before and after a game I do exercise and stretch out, which I feel is important. I do get some general stiffness after this as expected. I then go for a 1 hour front crawl swim 2 days later, walking and exercise bike alternately etc.

My running is 5k max every 2 or 3 weeks (a shorter jog every week), again without issue apart from muscle tightness.

So far so good.

@Ric A Thanks for your update. I am certain your progress will encourage other members going through recovery.

Regarding the vision issue - have you tried multi-focal lenses? Work great for me!

Hi all.

I have played abou 30 games of squash now, some lasting 90 mins, and no issues at all.

My wife is a good player, but I can now use my old handicap of minus 20 and manage to win, close games though.

The only pains are muscular which disappear after a day or two.

Im so pleased. My swimming is at a maximum of 3 hours now, now that is hard going but very pleasing to be able to do.

I need to start yoga or pilates to add to core strength though. I think I should be lifting weights also, but havent gotten round to this yet.
