THR Made it...

I guess since I am up and moving maybe socks aren't needed. I am actually shocked at how fast I was up walking and after coming home I am walking a lot. Not long distance but often. Its a blessing that my new hip feels better than my other hip. Having all this knowledge from everyone here helps so much with the how's, what's and any questions. Thanks so much!!

My final advice would be of course to call your OS if you're super concerned....but in my very humble (and nonprofessional) opinion, given you're a month out and your mobility being good, as well still on the blood thinners, I think you're safe. :) :-) (:

@SaraK Hi just wondering about the intermittent cuffs obviously clots are a concern and talking to my OS he said either shots or tablets and compression stockings (as long as I shave my legs !) When do you use the cuffs and did they give you them to take home or can you get your own agree though keeping as mobile as possible is best thing however not always possible at night.

Just noticed that it says my surgery was November 7, But it was Dec 6. I swear lol. Wonder why it says that. Me and Jaydub had same day surgerys. Freaky!!

Oh my bad @Tboom I was going by the date in your signature....that says November 7!!!! Yikes okay, well, hmmm....are you continuing the thinners at home then? Wow, 4 days post and moving well. BRAVO!!!!!!

Wonder why it says that. Yep I'd be healed up by now if it was a month ago. And yes I have to give myself a shot every morning for 14 days then I will take aspirin after that. Had the compressor pump things on in hospital but no one said anything about wearing stocking when I came home...which I am glad. I hope its cuz I am mobile enough and not at risk!!!

As you can see sleep isn't happening for me. I just can't sleep on my back very long. Never have.

I'm just going to carry on from your compression sock post, over here...easier for my tired brain haha I absolutely relate to how much back sleeping is the pits. My back is so sore from it and I'm also finding my my right hip, the "good" one, is hurting more because of this back sleeping garbage. I was told you can carefully with a couple pillows between your legs, lay on the non operative side, but I've not been able to get entirely comfortable with pain in the new hip. I managed a bit this morning though and it felt wonderful for that brief while. I sure miss my curled up side sleeping....I envy the cat now!

@mcopt - they sent me home with the cuffs and then I'll return the motor when done. I'm supposed to use them 24/7 for 2 weeks (taking off during showers, PT etc. The motor charges when plugged in and it can be taken with you when you move around or go somewhere. I did that religiously after the first Surgery but and discovered that not all are as compliant.

This time around, I used them 24/7 for the first few days but as I've gotten more active, I haven't been using them during the day except when sitting longer term. I do use throughout the night. I may keep them longer than required. We'll be traveling 4 hours to my mother's house at the 3 week point. I may use them during the car ride just because of the limited movement (or not).

I was given a compression sock to wear for a couple of weeks. Took it off after I got home to take a shower and never put it on again. It hurt and the top band was rubbing blisters.i was on blood thinner for a month and kept moving my legs.

I did same MammaT. Asking for compression socks is like asking for a root canal...
If they don't think you need them, don't ask.:dubious:
Do what doctor says but mine got lost in the washer after the first time I had to launder them...oops. go figure.

I was not given or told to wear compression socks, is that weird or not
Not at all! I never used them. TEDs Negative Research: Lancet 27th May 2009
I just don't know if I need them with the injections
That's not the issue. Read the article
I guess since I am up and moving maybe socks aren't needed
Exactly!

You need to read these - see there is one about sleep deprivation

Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

Pain management and the pain chart
Healing: how long does it take?
Chart representation of THR recovery

Dislocation risk and 90 degree rule
Energy drain for THRs
Pain and swelling control: elevation is the key

Post op blues is a reality - be prepared for it

Myth busting: on getting addicted to pain meds
Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery. While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

@Tboom no TED stockings for me either and 30 days of aspirin for clot prevention. I was glad not to have to do injections or stockings. It seems the protocol is very dependent on OS preferences.

@Tboom you will notice that I have merged your two threads together as we prefer that members in recovery only have one thread.

This is for three reasons:
1. if you keep starting new threads, you miss the posts others have left you in the old threads
2. it often ends up that information is unnecessarily repeated
3. it's best if we can keep all your recovery story in one place so it's easily accessed if we need to advise you.

Please keep all your questions and updates on this thread. If you would like a new thread title just give a shout.

Hope all is well. Ice, ice , ice Tboom.
This is the tough stuff...just do what you have to and rest all you can.
Hope you have a Good Day:wink:

First hip last June I wasn’t told to wear the torture socks. The nurse told me as long as I’m up every hour or so no need. This hip two weeks ago I was told to wear them for a month. Same Surgon. Wait a minute actually it was his PA that told me to wear them. I didn’t see the PA at all the first hip? No shots but taking Xarelto for 30 days. I’m going to call the office.

Don't feel neglected, feel blessed.
They're horrid.

Woke up this morning and thought that I’d somehow stabbed the back of my leg with something. But turns out the compression sock slid down and was almost cutting into my leg. I’m done with them.
